2 Fifth Sunday Of Lent OF THE IMMACULATE First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34 After calling the people back to the Lord, Jeremiah shifts his tone and offers a message of hope. In contrast to the rooting up and tearing down of the first chapter, he now speaks of building. God is not only offering a renewed covenant, but a new covenant written on the hearts. The passage is stylistically like Hosea, using many of the same words. Second Reading: Hebrews 5:7-9 To obey is one thing; to obey to the point of death is obedience of an almost unfathomable magnitude. In this chapter, the writer compares Christ to the high priest Melchizedek. The passage contrasts the total humanity of Christ with his divinity, through which eternal salvation is achieved for all humankind. Gospel: John Jesus has entered Jerusalem in jubilant glory, welcomed as a king. Now he must convey to his companions the destiny he walks. Now the time has come, and it is to death that he must travel. The path to true eternal life is going to involve giving up earthly life. The agricultural metaphor of the seed that dies in order to produce fruit; harvest cannot be achieved without it. Notice that the conversion of the Greeks is mentioned at the outset. This message comes not only to the Jews, but to all people. A powerful voice underscores the truth of what Jesus is saying, but not all can hear it correctly. Reflection Obedience is not a popular term these days. To our ears, obedience smacks to much of the subservience, of giving up and giving over one s free will. And yet, Jesus was clearly the model of obedience. Can we really claim that Jesus is our model, too? We can if, like Jesus, we recognize that God s new covenant with us is one that is heartfelt and heart-written. We can if we realize that God s new covenant with us is one that asks no limits of and places no limits on us. Then, as heart of our hearts, God s new covenant will surely lead us to obedience. It will prompt us to give of ourselves to others, to be lifted up for others, even to die for others, all for the sake of the love that exist both between us and God and among all of us whose hearts God has embraced. 2 Pastoral Visitation Training for the Sick, Elderly and Homebound April-May, 2018 Christ Our Light Catholic Church, Loudonville Beginning Thursday, April 5 th, a Six Week Formation and Skill Building Workshop entitled, Pastoral Visitation to the Sick, Elderly and Homebound will be held from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 1 Maria Dr., Loudonville, NY This program will be held Thursday evenings through May 10th and will provide information on: the art of pastoral visitation; communication skills; illness issues; spiritual assessment; grief and loss; suffering and faith; death and dying; ritual and sacraments in pastoral ministry; theology of pastoral care and care giving issues. 5 March 18, 2018 From Father LeFort Throughout these last nine months, since my arrival here, you have been extremely flexible and patient with the subtle adjustments we ve made. I am grateful for your kindness and the welcome you continue to demonstrate. As you know, with Deacon Jim s reassignment last fall, the Cathedral has been without the ministry of a deacon. This has been recently remedied: Bishop Scharfenberger has assigned Deacon Tim Kosto to our Cathedral parish for the exercise of his liturgical ministry. I have served alongside Deacon Tim for several years and I know you will surely appreciate his ministry among us. Deacon Tim will begin here on May 1 st (he will also be here to serve the upcoming Holy Week liturgies). Mrs. Pilar Dell has just completed her first month here as our parish secretary and from all accounts she not only enjoys her work but is also enjoyable in her many interactions with staff, parishioners and visitors. If you have a chance, please do stop by the rectory and introduce yourself to her. Although Lucy McHenry has now retired, she promises to continue to provide us with assistance as needed. Happy retirement Lucy and thank you for your special ministry! Several months ago, our Facilities Manager Kurt Schlachter informed me of his desire to retire in April after many years of dedicated and faithful service. I am grateful for his dedication to the Cathedral, his love for our Church, and his desire to continue to be of service to us whenever we need. This month we welcome our new Facilities Manager, Anthony Fratianni. Anthony has already brought his skills to our benefit over the last few weeks and I am happy that he has committed himself to serve with us. Finally, this weekend I am away for a swift vacation, returning in time to enjoy Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord and the great mysteries contained in our celebrations of Holy Week. Let us continue to pray for one another that our Lenten journey is fruitful. 4B
