2 OF THE IMMACULATE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST (CORPUS CHRISTI) First Reading: In the reading from Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the Israelites of the manna which fell from heaven each night during their wanderings in the desert. This mysterious food was not simply sustenance for their bodies. It also sustained their faith, reminding them daily of God s protecting care and God s determination to bring them to their new homeland as he had promised. Second Reading: This passage from 1 Corinthians reminds us that the Body of Christ is not simply something we receive; it is something we become. The bread and wine we share are truly the Body and Blood of Christ, and we who receive them become one body incorporated into Christ and into each other. Gospel: Jesus recalls the manna in the desert and invites the people to taste a new kind of food, which gives life not just from one day to the next, but life that lasts forever. Jesus teaching about the Bread of Life marks a turning point in the Gospel according to John: many, including some of his disciples, cannot accept it and no longer follow him. Today s solemnity places before us the mystery of Christ s abiding presence in his church. Are we prepared to receive this bread of everlasting life and live what it demands of us?
