2 CATHEDRAL OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ALBANY Third Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Ezra the scribe and priest, brings the book of the law before the intergenerational assembly and proclaims clearly and audibly from it as gifted readers do in our assemblies today. The law was to serve as the basis for the community to replace their tears with joy, for the Lord is their strength, and to feast abundantly because the day is holy for the Lord. May we heed this advice when the demands of discipleship cause us to feel overburdened. Second Reading: For the Corinthian community that struggled to understand that they were to value each member equally and affirm the diversity of gifts present among them, Paul s teaching about the unity of the many parts of the body was not easy to accept or enact. God designed the body as such so if one part suffers, all do, and if one part succeeds, all can experience joy. Paul tells the Corinthians that they together are Christ s Body. There can be no division among them since there is only one Christ. Gospel: The first half of today s Gospel reading is from the prologue to the Gospel in which Luke informs us that he writes to provide an orderly and accurate account of the events that have occurred in their midst. The second half of the reading reveals to us how, early on in his account, Luke identifies Jesus as the fulfillment of God s covenantal promises in the Old testament. On the Sabbath and in his hometown synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus proclaims Isaiah 61:1-2 and announces the fulfillment of this Scripture passage here and now. 2 Please join Bishop Edward B. 5 January 27, 2018 Bulletin Insert: Bishop s Open Letter to the Governor This weekend s bulletins contain a copy of the open letter Bishop Scharfenberger issued to Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Saturday, January 19 concerning the so-called Reproductive Health Act. You ll note that our bishop pleaded with the governor to change the course of his intended actions. Since that time, sadly, the governor signed the bill into law this past Tuesday. Regardless of this horrific outcome, we wanted to be sure all parishioners and people of good will had the chance to read the serious concerns our bishop expressed to the governor at the outset of last weekend. Blessing of Throats February 3 is the traditional date for celebrating the feast of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr. Also, on that day, Catholics have long held the desire to have their throats blessed with crossed candles as they ask for the saint s intercession. Although the Church celebrates the 4 th Sunday in Ordinary Time on February 3 this year, we will offer the traditional Blessing of Throats during the es of that Sunday, immediately following the homily. May St. Blaise intercede for us to our Heavenly Father, that we be preserved from serious illness. 4B
