San Pedro is the first Catholic Church in the upper keys since the Spanish missionaries preached to the Caloosa Indians in the eighteenth century. Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley of the Diocese of St. Augustine selected the name Mission De San Pedro. San Pedro was dedicated as a mission in 1955 by Archbishop Hurley. San Pedro is a Stewardship parish. We depend on the generosity and faith of the community and parishioners to support this beautiful parish. We look forward to people giving of their time, talent and treasure. Although we are small, we provide a variety of ministries. We have the San Pedro Women s Guild and Men s Club who gather for parish events and fellowship. Our Youth Group meets every Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm in Williams Hall. Religious Education classes are taught on Sunday. There are daily masses and Eucharistic services. Each year San Pedro sponsors the famous Christmas Bazaar and Art Under the Oaks, arts and crafts shows. Since we are a seasonal parish, we invite all visitors to join our fellowship and hospitality while you are here in the Florida Keys. Photos by: Belinda Serata

3 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They, too, give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:28). SHE CONTRIBUTED ALL SHE HAD Throughout the year we have seen in Mark s Gospel a pervading focus on the meaning and cost of discipleship. It is our core vocation as Christians to follow Jesus way of loving service, and accept whatever sacrifices or suffering that may entail. In today s Gospel reading a destitute widow acts as a Christ-like figure to show us the extremes to which our Christian vocation may lead us. Like Jesus, the widow contributes her whole livelihood (her life?) in sacrifice to God (Mark 12:44). We see, however, that she is receiving nothing to make her sacrifice worthwhile. The scribes are taking advantage of her, and God will not be pleased. Unlike the widow, Jesus sacrifice brought eternal reward to him and to all humankind. Our Christian vocation calls us to give our lives as Jesus did. We give, not in hope of being rewarded, but in thanksgiving for the gift already given the salvation and loving kindness shown to us in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. We give knowing that we may face suffering, as Jesus did, but trusting that God will respond in mercy and love. THE FATHERLESS AND THE WIDOW GOD SUSTAINS Today s psalm (146:9) describes the response of God to those who are in need: The LORD protects strangers. / The fatherless and the widow he sustains, / but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The woman in our reading from the first book of Kings acted in God s way by protecting the stranger, Elijah. Elijah, in turn, extended God s care by sustaining the widow and her son. The scribes in the Gospel, however, do nothing to sustain the widow who contributed all she had, her whole livelihood (Mark 12:44). Instead they profited from her devotion. How does the vocation to discipleship require us to act toward those in need? How are you called to extend God s protection and care in your part of God s world? 4 THANKSGIVING BASKETS Beginning October 24 and ending November 22, the San Pedro Women s Guild will be collecting non perishable foods and monetary donations for Thanksgiving Baskets. Through parish generosity, basket and food gifts certificates are provided to members of our San Pedro family and the community. Last year alone, San Pedro provided baskets and gift cards to nearly 40 families! Please place your donations in the display located in the south wing of the church.
