By doing this you are fulfilling the whole law and the prophets; and you are assuring yourself of the place in heaven which Christ has won for you. Today s good news The first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles 10:25-26, 34-35, and describes the reception of the first Gentiles into the Christian Church. The second reading is from the first letter of John 4:7-10 in which he urges us to love one another, for we are sons of God whose very essence is love. The Gospel is from St. John 15:9-17. It is only a few weeks since Good Friday when we commemorated the agonizing death of Christ on Mount Calvary. This was an excruciating, shameful death even for hardened criminals who deserved it. But for our loving Savior, the innocent lamb of God, one who had never offended God or neighbor, it was something of which the whole human race should be ashamed forever. What caused Christ that torment and death on the cross was our sins, the sins of all mankind and not the spite and hatred of his Jewish opponents, who were only instruments in the tragedy. Atonement had to be made to God for the sins of the world, so that men could reach the eternal inheritance which the incarnation made available to them. However, not all the acts of the entire human race could make a sufficient atonement to God. A sacrifice, an expiation of infinite value was needed. The death of the Son of God in his human nature was alone capable of making such an expiation. How far can human ingratitude and thanklessness go? Christ told us, through the disciples on Holy Thursday night, that he had made us his friends, his intimates. We have been adopted into the family by Christ becoming man, we have been guaranteed all the rights of children intimacy with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and the future sharing in the eternal happiness of that divine household. Christ's incarnation made us God's children; Christ's death on the cross removed sin. Sin is the one obstacle that could prevent us reaching our eternal inheritance. It is a marvelous thing to be alive, if we have hope in a future life. If nothing awaited us but the grave, then to live on this earth, which is a valley of sorrow and tears for the vast majority, would be the cruelest of jests. But of this we need have no fear. Life on earth is but a short prelude to our real existence.

Please come and not leave our Lord in the Eucharist unattended during this time. There will be the Spanish Holy Hour and Exposition from 6 7:15 PM with week and all are invited. Congratulations to Our New Communicants May 6, 2018 The Ascension of the Lord The Feast of the Ascension is on May 10th BUT it is celebrated on Sunday, May 13th. The church calendar states that it is a Holy Day of Obligation in certain cities but it also shows that we will celebrate on Sunday, May 13th. Therefore, May 10th is NOT an Holy Day of Obligation. St. Damien of Molokai Feast Day May 10th Joseph De Veuster, the future Father Damien, was born at Tremelo in Belgium, January 3rd, His was a large family and his father was a farmer-merchant. At the beginning of 1859 he entered the novitiate at Louvain, in the same house as his brother. There he took the name of Damien. Damien obtained permission from the Superior General to take his brother's place as he had become ill. He arrived in Honolulu on March 19th, 1864, where he was ordained to the priesthood the following May 21st. He immediately devoted himself, body and soul, to the difficult service of a "country missionary" on the island of Hawaii, the largest in the Hawaiian group. At that time, the Hawaiian Government decided on a very harsh measure aimed at stopping the spread of "leprosy," the deportation to the neighboring island of Molokai, of all those infected by what was thought to be an incurable disease. Four Brothers volunteered, they would take turns visiting and assisting the "lepers" in their distress. Damien was the first to leave on May 10th, At his own request and that of the lepers, he remained definitively on Molokai. He brought hope to this hell of despair. He became a source of consolation and encouragement for the lepers, their pastor, the doctor of their souls and of their bodies, without any distinction of race or religion. He gave a voice to the voiceless, he built a community where the joy of being together and openness to the love of God gave people new reasons for living. After Father Damien contracted the disease in 1885, he was able to identify completely with them: "We lepers." Father Damien was, above all, a witness of the love of God for His people. All that made him "the happiest missionary in the world," a servant of God, and a servant of humanity. Damien died on April 15th, 1889, having served sixteen years among the lepers. Pope Paul VI signed the Decree on the "heroicity of his virtues" on July 7th He was canonized on October 11th, Cor Jesu Food Pantry Cor Jesu, Food Pantry is in need of your assistance. Usually they may ask for specific items to replenish their shelves. Recently they sent a picture of near empty shelves. They are happy to receive any items needed to replenish items to assist those in need. They are also in need of store gift cards for items such as milk, butter or meat. 5 Sixth Sunday of Easter St Teresa Talent Show Music/ Dance Arts and Crafts May 20, 2018 at 4:00PM in the Parish Center St Teresa invites all parishioners and their family/ friends, St. Teresa school students, teachers and parents to participate and show their gifts in our first Talent Show. Talents include: singing, dancing, musical instruments, acrobatics, skits, ROTC, martial arts, comedy, poems, etc. Each performance should not exceed 3 minutes. At this event we would also like to showcase handmade talents such as paintings, sculptures, crochet, knitting, crafts, etc. This will be a potluck dinner/show event where your ticket is your tray of food for 8-10 people. Nonalcoholic drinks will be provided. Games and 50/50 drawings and much more fun will be part of this evening where any proceeds will support our school. Doors will open at 3:30PM. All handmade showcase items need to be set up earlier in the space provided. Stage show will start at 4:30PM followed by potluck reception, games and drawings. Main entrance for this event will be the door across from Ojibway Ave. Sign-up sheets will be at the table by the main entrance of the church. For more information, please contact Caroline Genovesi at cgenovesi@orlandodiocese.org or Music Department The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe BASILICA CHOIR PERFORMS CONCERT CELEBRATING EASTER AND PENTECOST (Orlando) The Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, will present a special concert entitled Come to Us, Creative Spirit on Sunday, May 20th at 3:00 pm, as part of the Basilica s Concert Series. At this concert, the Basilica Choir will perform music celebrating the many facets of this holy season, including music by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Vaughan Williams and local composers Marshall Webb, Wm. Glenn Osborne, Gary Prettyman and more. Also performed will be Handel s famous Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah. The Basilica Choir was founded to minister to the many thousands of tourists and visitors to the central Florida area, and to provide sacred music at weekend Masses. The singers in the choir are all professional musicians in the Orlando area and are under the direction of Dr. William Picher. Admission charge for the concert is $25 for adults, under 12 are free. 6 Sixth Sunday of Easter Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, When Plans Go Wrong Some things don t work out the way you plan them. Even when you pray over a matter, and you decide on an action that you truly believe fits the will of God, things can turn out different from what you had in mind. Sometimes God takes matters out of your hands. Take Peter, for example. After the resurrection of Jesus, the Holy Spirit came upon him and other disciples. Peter preached repentance to converts from Judaism. They were baptized and then received the gifts of the Spirit. It formed a neat program: Find some Jews. Preach to them. Baptize them. Watch for the gifts of the Spirit. What could possibly go wrong? Cornelius. Peter wasn t counting on Cornelius. One day, while Peter was at prayer, he realized that God was calling not just Jews, but Gentiles to belief in Christ. The Gentile Cornelius, who had also been praying, sent friends to find Peter. When Peter came, his neat program fell apart. The Holy Spirit came upon the household of Cornelius before they were baptized, and before these Gentiles could even become Jews! God had another plan. Sometimes when things don t go our way there is a very simple reason. They are going the way God planned them. Written by Paul Turner.
