St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, home to worshippers from more than two dozen nations, seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia, and home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. We are delighted that you are with us today: come and worship with us again. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please make yourself known to our clergy. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past and present and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. 8AM BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER HOLY COMMUNION President and Preacher: The Ven. Ray McInnes Reader: Ann Jackman During Communion, please join in the hymn, which is repeated a number of times: Jacques Berthier ( ) Together in Song 714 1

Walmisley ( ) Communion motet: Miserere mei, Deus Gregorio Allegri (c ) Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness: according to the multitude of thy mercies do away mine offences. Wash me throughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified in thy saying, and clear when thou art judged. Turn thy face from my sins: and put out all my misdeeds. Make me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord: and my mouth shall shew thy praise. For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it thee: but thou delightest not in burnt-offerings. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt thou not despise. O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer young bullocks upon thine altar. 2

Organ Postlude: Prelude in C minor, Op 37, No 1 Felix Mendelssohn ( ): Mr Lachlan Redd, Sub-Organist COLLECT God of all times and places, in Jesus Christ, who was lifted up on the cross, you opened for us the path to eternal life: grant that we, being born again of water and the Spirit, may joyfully serve you in newness of life and faithfully walk in your holy ways; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING Exodus 19 : 2a-8 2 The Israelites had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. 3 Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: 4 You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, 6 but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites. 7 So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. 8 The people all answered as one: Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 22 : At 8am and 9am please join in saying the verses printed in bold. At 10.30am the psalm is sung by the Choir. 24 O praise the Lord, all you that fear him: hold him in honour, O seed of Jacob, and let the seed of Israel stand in awe of him. 25 For he has not despised nor abhorred the poor man in his misery: nor did he hide his face from him, but heard him when he cried. 26 From you springs my praise in the great congregation: I will pay my vows in the sight of all that fear you; 27 The meek shall eat of the sacrifice and be satisfied: and those who seek the Lord shall praise him may their hearts rejoice for ever! 28 Let all the ends of the earth remember and turn to the Lord: and let all the families of the nations worship before him. 29 For the kingdom is the Lord s: and he shall be ruler over the nations. 30 How can those who sleep in the earth do him homage: 3

or those that descend to the dust bow down before him? 31 But he has saved my life for himself: and my posterity shall serve him. 32 This shall be told of my Lord to a future generation: and his righteousness declared to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. SECOND READING 2 Timothy 2 : Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David that is my gospel, 9 for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 11 The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful for he cannot deny himself. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING John 18 : 12, 15-18, Please sing the Acclamation after the Cantor and repeat it as indicated Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. I have prayed that your faith may not fail, Peter, says the Lord, Once you have turned, strengthen your brothers. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 12 So the soldiers, their officer, and the Jewish police arrested Jesus and bound him. 15 Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 but Peter was standing outside at the gate. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who guarded the gate, and brought Peter in. 17 The woman said to Peter, You are not also one of this man s disciples, are you? He said, I am not. 18 Now the slaves and the police had made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were standing round it and warming themselves. Peter also was standing with them and warming himself. 25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, You are not also one of his disciples, are you? He denied it and said, I am not. 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, 4

Did I not see you in the garden with him? 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment the cock crowed. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. CHORALE (10.30AM ONLY) Please join in singing as you are able Translation: Peter, who does not think back, disowns his God, he, however, at a serious look, bitterly weeps. Jesus, also look at me, when I do not want to atone; when I have done evil move my conscience! 5

Officiant: The Ven. Ray McInnes Preacher: The Revd Canon Christopher Carolane Readers: Tim James and Canon Colin Reilly Introit Hymn: Take up thy cross (hymn 2, pg. 10) Collection Hymn: God of grace and God of glory (hymn 6, p. 13) Dismissal Hymn: Love will be our Lenten calling (hymn 1, pg. 10) Responses: William Byrd (c ) Psalm Chant: Stephen Elvey ( ) Setting: Fauxbourdons William Byrd (c ) Anthem: Adoramus te, Christi Orlandus Lassus ( ) We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, for by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world. Lord, have mercy upon us. Postlude: Interludium from Harmonium Sonata No.1, Op.36 Sigfrid Karg-Elert ( ): Mr Mark Slavec, June Nixon Organ Scholar PSALM 119 : O think upon thy servant, as concerning thy word: wherein thou hast caused me to put my trust. 50 The same is my comfort in my trouble: for thy word hath quickened me. 51 The proud have had me exceedingly in derision: yet have I not shrinked from thy law. 52 For I remembered thine everlasting judgements, O Lord: and received comfort. 53 I am horribly afraid : for the ungodly that forsake thy law. 54 Thy statutes have been my songs: in the house of my pilgrimage. 55 I have thought upon thy Name, O Lord, in the night-season: and have kept thy law. 56 This I had: because I kept thy commandments. 6

COLLECT FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT Almighty God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body,. and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 7

HYMN 1: LOVE WILL BE OUR LENTEN CALLING Elizabeth J. Smith (b.1956) Together in Song 684 Reproduced with permission 2 Peace will be our Lenten living as we turn for home again, longing for the words of pardon, stripping off old grief and pain, till we stand, restored and joyful, with the Church on Easter day. 3 Truth will be our Lenten learning: hear the Crucified One call! Shadowed by the Saviour s passion, images and idols fall, and, in Easter s holy splendour, God alone is all in all. HYMN 2: TAKE UP THY CROSS Charles Everest ( ) alt. New English Hymnal 76 2 Take up thy cross; let not its weight fill thy weak spirit with alarm; his strength shall bear thy spirit up, and brace thy heart, and nerve thine arm. 3 Take up thy cross; nor heed the shame, nor let thy foolish pride rebel; the Lord for thee the Cross endured, to save thy soul from death and hell. 4 Take up thy cross then in his strength, and calmly every danger brave; Twill guide thee to a better home, and lead to victory o er the grave. 5 Take up thy cross, and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only they who bear the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown. 10

HYMN 3: LORD JESUS CHRIST, YOU HAVE COME TO US Patrick Robert Norman Appleford (b.1925) Together in Song 526 Reproduced with permission 2 Lord Jesus Christ, now and every day teach us how to pray, Son of God. You have commanded us to do this in remembrance, Lord, of you: into our lives your power breaks through, living Lord. 4 Lord Jesus Christ, I would come to you, live my life for you, Son of God. All your commands I know are true, your many gifts will make me new, into my life your power breaks through, living Lord. 3 Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us, born as one of us, Mary s son; led out to die on Calvary, risen from death to set us free, living Lord Jesus, help us see you are Lord. 11

HYMN 4: STRENGTHEN FOR SERVICE Ascr. Ephraim (c ), tr. C. W. Humphreys ( ) and Percy Dearmer ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 421 Lord, may the tongues which Holy sang keep free from all deceiving; the eyes which saw thy love be bright, thy blessed hope perceiving. The feet that tread thy holy courts from light do thou not banish; the bodies by thy Body fed with thy new life replenish. HYMN 5: MAKE ME A CHANNEL OF YOUR PEACE Sebastian Temple ( ) alt. Together in Song 607. Reproduced with permission 12

2 Make me a channel of your peace. Where there s despair in life, let me bring hope; where there is darkness, let me bring your light; and where there s sadness, ever joy. Chorus O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved, as to love with all my soul. 3 Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving of ourselves that we receive, and in dying that we re born to eternal life. HYMN 6: GOD OF GRACE AND GOD OF GLORY Harry Emerson Fosdick ( ) Australian Hymn Book 543i Reproduced with permission 2 Lo, the hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways. Fears and doubts too long have bound us; free our hearts to work and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, grant us courage for the living of these days: for the living of these days. 3 Cure thy children s warring madness; bend our pride to your control; shame our wanton selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, grant us courage lest we miss thy kingdom s goal: lest we miss thy kingdom s goal. 13
