"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Lenten Vespers Three (In a Series of Five) Peace Chapel March 1, 2016
Prelude The congregations candles are lit. The priest then lights the Garden Candles, singing, People: Light and joy in Je - sus Christ our Lord! Thanks be to God! All: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we light these candles to thank you for the light of the world, Jesus Christ our Lord. May we who journey through the darkness of Lent be led by the radiance of your one true light. This we ask in the name of Jesus, your son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. Hymn: DAY IS DONE, BUT LOVE UNFAILING All sing Day is done, but love unfailing dwells ever here; shadows fall, but hope, prevailing, calms every fear. God, our maker, none forsaking, take our hearts, of love's own making; watch our sleeping, guard our waking, be always near. Dark descends, but light unending shines through our night; you are with us, ever lending new strength to sight. One in love, your truth confessing, one in hope of heaven's blessing, may we see, in love's possessing, love's endless light! Eyes will close, but you unsleeping watch by our side; death may come, in love's safe keeping still we abide. God of love, all evil quelling, sin forgiving, fear dispelling, stay with us, our hearts indwelling, this eventide.
The Blessing of the Light People: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The choir sings the refrain, all repeat: Bless-ed are you! Bless-ed are you! Bless-ed are you, O Lord our God! Blessed are you, O Lord our God, the shepherd of Israel, their pillar of cloud by day, their pillar of fire by night. In these forty days you lead us into the desert of repentance That in this pilgrimage of prayer we might learn to be your people once more. In fasting and service you bring us back to your heart. You open our eyes to your presence in the world and you free our hands to lead others to the radiant splendour of your mercy. Be with us in these journey days, for without you we are lost and will perish. To you alone be dominion and glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Reader: A Reading from the Wisdom of Soloman. Wisdom But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. Reader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. The reader concludes saying, Psalm The Choir sings the refrain, all repeat Cantor: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me, and are so far from my salvation, from the words of my distress? O My God, I cry in the daytime, but you do not answer, and by night also, but I find no rest. Refrain Cantor: Yet you are the Holy One, enthroned upon the praise of Israel. Our forebears trusted in you, they trusted, and you delivered them. They cried out to you and were delivered, they put their trust in you and were not confounded. Refrain
Reader: A Reading from the Gospel of Mark. Mark When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, Listen, he is calling for Elijah. And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down. Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, Truly this man was God s Son! Reader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Reflection Father Daniel Brereton Musical Offering: Justine Owen The Prayers & Lenten Prose The reader concludes saying, All join the Cantor in singing: Hear us, O Lord, have mer-cy up-on us: for we have sin-ned a - gainst thee. Cantor: To thee, Redeemer, on thy throne of glory, lift we our weeping eyes in holy pleadings; listen, O Jesu, to our supplications. Cantor: O thou chief corner-stone, Right Hand of the Father, Way of salvation, Gate of life celestial; cleanse thou our sinful souls from all defilement. Cantor: God, we implore thee, in thy glory seated, bow down and hearken to thy weeping children; pity and pardon all our grievous trespasses. Cantor: Sins oft committed now we lay before thee; with true contrition, now no more we veil them; grant us, Redeemer, loving absolution.
Cantor: Innocent captive, taken unresisting, falsely accused, and for us sinners sentenced; save us, we pray thee, Jesu our Redeemer. Hear us, O Lord, have mer-cy up-on us: for we have sin-ned a - gainst thee. All are invited to come forward and speak the name of some one whose cares or memories weigh heavily on their hearts. Lord it is night. People: The night is for stillness. Let us be still in the presence of God. It is night after a long day. People: What has been done has been done; what has not been done has not been done; let it be. The night is dark. People: Let our fears of the darkness of the world and of our own lives rest in you. The night is quiet. People: Let the quietness of your peace enfold us, all dear to us, and all who have no peace. The night heralds the dawn. People: Let us look expectantly to a new day, new joys, new possibilities. In your name we pray. Amen. Come, O Spirit of God, and make within us your dwelling place and home. May our darkness be dispelled by your light, and our troubles calmed by your peace; may all evils be redeemed by your love, all pain transformed through the suffering of Christ, and all dying glorified by his risen life. People: Amen.
Act of Faith The fear of being forsaken by one whom we love, in whom we have trusted, is a strong one, and it runs deep through our hearts. Even Jesus, in his time of greatest anguish feared being abandoned, not only by his friends but by his Father. Though we at times may forsake God, God has promised never to forsake us. The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God. Let us entrust ourselves and those we love into the hand of that God. I invite therefore, in the name of the Lord, to write upon your slip of paper, a name, or perhaps more than one name, of those whom you wish to leave in God s care this night. It may be one for whom you are worried or one for whom you long to see again. Come and release that name into the depths of this well as a sign of faith, trusting them to God s never-failing love. All are invited to come forward and place their names in the well. Hymn: ABIDE WITH ME All sing Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs our life s little day; Earth s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see; O thou, who changest not, abide with me. I need thy presence every passing hour; What but thy grace can foil the tempter s power? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me. Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee: in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. O living God, in Jesus Christ you were laid in the tomb at this evening hour, and thereby sanctified the grave to be a bed of hope to your people. Give us courage and faith to die daily to all that separates us from your love, and renew us in the waters of your salvation. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord. All: Amen.
The Lord s Prayer All: Gathering all our cares into one, let us pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Hymn: GOD, WHEN I STAND All sing God, when I stand, no path before me clear, when every prayer seems prisoner of my pain, come with a gentleness which calms my fear; Lord of my helplessness, my victory gain. When all my prayers no answer seem to bring, and there is silence in my deepest soul; when in the wilderness I find no spring, Lord of the desert places, keep me whole. When the dark Lord of loneliness prevails, and, all defeated, joy and friendship die, come, be my joy; such love that never fails, pierce the self pity of my shadowed sky. When, as did Thomas, I presume thee dead, feeling and faith itself within me cold, freshen my lips with wine, my soul with bread; banish my poverty with heaven's gold. Go forth in the name of Christ, trusting in God s steadfast love for you. People: Thanks be to God. All music is reproduced under CCLI # Grief to Wellness Through the cemetery office a workshop is offered to help those having trouble coping with the loss of a loved one. Please contact the office at to find out about the next series offered. You are not alone, we are here to help.
