St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, home to worshippers from more than two dozen nations, seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia, and home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. We are delighted that you are with us today: come and worship with us again. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please make yourself known to our clergy. Amen. FIRST READING Exodus 1 : The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. 4 If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbour in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 You
shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. 7 They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. 10 You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. 11 This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. 1 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgements: I am the Lord. 1 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. 14 This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 149 : 1-5 At 8am and 9am the congregation join in saying the verses printed in bold. At 10.0am please repeat the response after the Cantor, then as indicated. 1 O praise the Lord, and sing to the Lord a new song: O praise him in the assembly of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their king. Let them praise him in the dance: let them sing his praise with timbrel and with harp. 4 For the Lord takes delight in his people: he adorns the meek with his salvation. 5 Let his faithful ones exult in his glory: let them sing for joy upon their beds. Response Response SECOND READING Romans 1 : Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgement. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.
Do you wish to have no fear of the authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive its approval; 4 for it is God s servant for your good. But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid, for the authority does not bear the sword in vain! It is the servant of God to execute wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be subject, not only because of wrath but also because of conscience. 6 For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are God s servants, busy with this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is due to them taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honour to whom honour is due. 8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet ; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, Love your neighbour as yourself. 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING Matthew 18 : 10-0 At 10.0am, please join in singing the Alleluia 4 Ferial Sarum F Alleluia! Alleluia! May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our heart, that we may see how great is the hope to which we are called. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Matthew: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 10 Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven. 1 What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 1 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost. 15 If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. 16 But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax-collector. 18 Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19 Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 0 For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 7 HYMN 1: BLESSED JESUS, AT YOUR WORD Tobias Clausnitzer ( ), trans. Catherine Winkworth (187 78) alt. Together in Song 47 All our knowledge, sense and sight lie in deepest darkness shrouded, till your Spirit breaks our night with your beams of truth unclouded; you alone to God can win us, only you work good within us. Glorious Lord, yourself impart, light of light from God proceeding; open lips and ears and heart, help us by your Spirit s leading; hear the cry your church now raises; Lord, accept our prayers and praises. HYMN : HAIL REDEEMER, KING DIVINE Patrick Brennan ( ) Australian Hymn Book 188. Reproduced with permission King, whose name creation thrills, rule our minds, our hearts, our wills, till in peace each nation rings with their praises, King of kings. Angels, saints and nations sing... King most holy, King of truth, guide the lowly, guide the youth; Christ thou King of glory bright, be to us eternal light. Angels, saints and nations sing... 7
4 Shepherd-king, o er mountains steep, homeward bring the wandering sheep; shelter in one royal fold states and kingdoms, new and old. Angels, saints and nations sing... HYMN : PRAISE, MY SOUL, THE KING OF HEAVEN Henry Francis Lyte ( ) alt. Australian Hymn Book 68 Praise him for his grace and favour to our people in distress; praise him still the same for ever, slow to chide and swift to bless: praise him, praise him, alleluia, glorious in his faithfulness. Father-like, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hand he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. praise him, praise him, alleluia, widely as his mercy flows! 4 Frail as summer s flower we flourish, blows the wind and it is gone; but while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on. Praise him, praise him, alleluia, praise the high eternal one! 5 Angels, help us to adore him, ye behold him face to face; sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space: praise him, praise him, alleluia, praise with us the God of grace 8
HYMN 4: O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST Richard Connolly (b.197) Australian Hymn Book 98 alt. Hear the songs your people raise, songs of joyful thanks and praise, calling all created things to adore you, King of kings. Christ, be with us as we go, let this blind world see and know, burning in our lives, the sight of its only saving light. 4 So will all exalt your name, and your kingship all proclaim, praising, with the heavenly host, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. HYMN 5: COME TO ME SAYS JESUS Alan Gaunt (b.195) Hymns Ancient and Modern 01 47ii I am meek and humble, find, with me, release from false airs and graces; come, and be at peace. Hear the call of Jesus, come, be deeply blessed; his the invitation, you the honoured guest. 4 Here, where bread is broken, here, where wine is poured, thankfully receive him, find your faith restored. 5 Pardon, feed and heal us, humble, courteous Lord, gracious host, for ever honoured and adored. 9
HYMN 6: LORD, JESUS CHRIST Patrick Robert Norman Appleford (b.195) Together in Song 56 Reproduced with permission Lord Jesus Christ, now and every day teach us how to pray, Son of God. You have commanded us to do this in remembrance, Lord, of you: into our lives your power breaks through, living Lord. Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us, born as one of us, Mary s son; led out to die on Calvary, risen from death to set us free, living Lord Jesus, help us see you are Lord. 4 Lord Jesus Christ, I would come to you, live my life for you, Son of God. All your commands I know are true, your many gifts will make me new, into my life your power breaks through, living Lord. 10
