St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Festive Choral Eucharist St Peter and St Paul, Apostles and Martyrs 1 July am WELCOME Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, the home for worshippers from more than two dozen nations, the seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia and the home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. We are delighted that you are with us this morning: come and worship with us again. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please make yourself known to our clergy. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past and present and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. Please join us in singing the hymns and saying those parts of the service printed in bold type. Please ensure that mobile phones and other devices are switched off. Following our service today, morning tea will be served in the side aisles, and you are encouraged to return to your seat with your hot drink ready for the Annual General Meeting to commence at 11.15am. Those who have booked for the Patronal Festival Lunch, to be served at 12.45pm, are encouraged to make their way to the Barbara Darling Room immediately the meeting is finished. MUSIC BEFORE THE SERVICE St Patrick s Breastplate, 3 rd Movement, Sonata No. 4, Celtica Charles V. Stanford ( ): Roslyn Carolane, Assistant Organist

GATHERING IN GOD S NAME Please stand for the Processional Hymn. THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN Sung by all, standing. Ye servants who once bore the light of Gospel truth o'er heathen night, alleluia, alleluia; still may your work that light impart, to glad our eyes and cheer our heart; alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. O God, by whom to them was given the key that shuts and opens heaven, alleluia, alleluia; our chains unbind, our loss repair, and grant us grace to enter there; alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. That when as judge thy Son shall come, to bring his ransomed people home, alleluia, alleluia; he may with them pronounce us blest, and place us in thine endless rest; alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Latin, c. 10 th century, tr. Richard Mant ( ) adapted from New English Hymnal 214 2

THE GREETING Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God s Kingdom, now and forever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. THE PRAYER OF PREPARATION Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The people are seated or kneel. THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. Let us therefore run our race, laying aside every weight and bringing our sins to the Lord in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All stand to sing 3

HYMN OF PRAISE Gloria in exclesis Deo Christ Church Mass Philip Matthias (b.1954) THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Let us pray. Almighty God, whose apostles Peter and Paul glorified you in their death as in their lives: grant that your Church, inspired by their teaching and example, and knit together in unity by your Spirit, may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 4

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The people are seated for the readings and psalm. THE FIRST READING Ezekiel Ms Jenny Liggett 11 For thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. 12 As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13 I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. 14 I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord GOD. 16 I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 87 Chant: Anthony Gregory Murray ( ) Reproduced from Together in Song 52 by permission The choir introduces the antiphon, then all repeat. He has founded it upon a holy hill : and the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things shall be spoken of you: O Zion city of our God. I might speak of my kindred in Egypt or Babylon: in Philistia, Tyre or Nubia, wherein each was born. But of Zion it shall be said: many were born in her, he that is Most High has established her. When the Lord draws up the record of the nations: he shall take note where everyone was born. And the singers and the dancers together: shall make their song to your name. Response Response Response 5

THE SECOND READING 2 Timothy Canon Kate Drummond In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. The people stand to sing and remain standing for the Gospel. THE GRADUAL HYMN 2 Gospel hope, proclaimed by Paul, bold apostle to the nations. Christ, whose death brought life for all we, with Paul, from sleep awaken. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! 3 Gospel light, proclaimed by Paul, shining in the face of Jesus. We, from Christ, have heard the call we, with Paul, in joyful witness! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Text: Edward Carter (b.1967). Reproduced with permission 6

Alleluia! Alleluia! Risen Lord, let us hear your voice; feed us with your living word. Alleluia. The Lord be with you And also with you. THE HOLY GOSPEL St John The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Matthew: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my lambs. 16 A second time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Tend my sheep. 17 He said to him the third time, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go. 19 (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, Follow me. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. THE SERMON The Dean Silence may be kept. The people stand for 7

THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Mrs Pat Blake, Ms Mia Lucas, Mr Reinaldo Adjiputro & Mr Damian Neylon After each intercession, In your mercy, hear our prayer. The president prays the concluding collect, and the people respond, Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Please be seated for THE NOTICES Please stand for 8

THE GREETING OF PEACE We are the body of Christ. His Spirit us with us. The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and remain standing to sing THE OFFERTORY HYMN During the hymn an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry. Each week our congregants contribute on average $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. 2 Love climbs the heights of joy and grace and gifts us with each sunlit day; the beauty of each sacred space brings blessings we may trace: God's love embraces all! 3 Love spans the breadth of faith and fear where questions dance with mystery, as wisdom holds us ever near and sings in accents clear: God's love embraces all! 4 Love sounds the depths of grief and pain and gathers all who weep and mourn; this loving presence will remain and life anew sustain: God's love embraces all! 5 Love permeates this holy ground and lights a fire of awe within; love speaks in stillness and in sound and shares this truth profound: God's love embraces all! Text: Helen Wiltshire (b.1945) Reproduced with permission 9

THE HOLY COMMUNION Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom: Blessed be God for ever. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. The president offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ, and in response the choir sing: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD Mass, op.36 Charles Marie Widor ( ) Sanctus and Benedictus Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The president recalls the Last Supper, and a minister introduces the following acclamation Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The prayer continues, and concludes:... in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours, for ever and ever. Amen. 10

THE LORD S PRAYER Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language, Notre Père..., Padre nuestro..., Vater unser..., 我們在天上的父 Bapa kami..., E to matou Matua..., 天の父よ... Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings O LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei Mass, op.36 C.M. Widor O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us peace. THE INVITATION The gifts of God for the people of God. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. All baptised Christians are invited to receive the bread and the wine of the Eucharist. Please tell the priest if you prefer to receive a gluten free wafer or a blessing. THE ANTHEM DURING COMMUNION From heaven s height Christ spake to call the gentiles great apostle Paul. From heaven s height Whose doctrine, like the thunder, sounds Unto the world s remotest bounds. 11

Now faith and hope and love abide, these three and the greatest of these is love. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesu. Text: Peter Damiani ( ), tr. John Mason Neale ( ) Based on 1 Corinthians 13:13 and Philippians 4:7 Music: June Nixon Commissioned by St Paul s Cathedral Melbourne for the 125th anniversary of the consecration, First performed 24 June 2016 THE SENDING OUT OF GOD S PEOPLE Please stand for THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Gracious God, we thank you that in this sacrament you assure us of your goodness and love. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving and help us to grow in love and obedience that we may serve you in the world and finally be brought to that table where all your saints feast with you for ever. Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. THE DISMISSAL HYMN 12

2 Freedom give to those in bondage, lift the burdens caused by sin. Give new hope, new strength and courage, grant release from fears within. Light for darkness; joy for sorrow; love for hatred; peace for strife; these and countless blessings follow as the Spirit gives new life. 3 In the streets of every city where the bruised and lonely dwell, let us show the Saviour s pity, let us of his mercy tell; to all lands and peoples bringing all the richness of thy word, till the world, thy praises singing, hails thee Christ, Redeemer, Lord. THE BLESSING Text: Hugh Sherlock ( ) Ancient & Modern Reproduced with permission May God give you grace to follow Peter and Paul and all his saints; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, in faith and hope and love be among you and remain with you always. HELP US APPOINT A NEW FULLTIME CLERGY COLLEAGUE The Cathedral is hoping to appoint a third senior fulltime cleric to coordinate teaching programs and Christian education programs for members of our Cathedral community, as well as develop, train and encourage congregational lay leadership to extend and grow our ministry at the heart of Melbourne. Chapter s Finance Committee has identified that we would need to raise an additional $50,000 each year for the next five years to make this appointment. We would be delighted if members were willing to pledge support for this important new role through increased giving. We will collect pledges until All Saints Sunday (4 Nov), and will keep a monthly tally on pledges received to keep you updated. Thank you for your generous support. 15
