Please join in singing the hymns and in saying the words printed in bold type. GATHERING IN GOD S NAME Please stand for the hymn 2 Formless, all lovely forms declare his loveliness; holy, no holiness on earth can his express. Behold the Lord of all: creation speaks his praise, and everywhere, above, below, his will obeys. THE WELCOME 3 God s Spirit freely flows, high surging where it will: in prophet s word he spoke of old, is speaking still. Established is God s law and changeless it shall stand, deep written on the human heart, on sea, on land. 4 God has eternal life implanted in the soul; his love shall be our strength and stay while ages roll. Praise to the living God, all praise be to his name, who was, and is, and is to be, and still the same. The Officiant welcomes the people and then intones Hebrew Yigdal, tr. Max Landsberg ( ) and others alt. Together in Song 102 THE RESPONSES Richard Webster (b. 1952) O Lord, open thou our lips; and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us. 2

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. PSALM 16 Choir Please Sit 1 Preserve me, O God: for in thee have I put my trust. 2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord: Thou art my God, my goods are nothing unto thee. 3 All my delight is upon the saints, that are in the earth: and upon such as excel in virtue. 4 But they that run after another god: shall have great trouble. 5 Their drink-offerings of blood will I not offer: neither make mention of their names within my lips. 6 The Lord himself is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup: thou shalt maintain my lot. 7 The lot is fallen unto me in a fair ground: yea, I have a goodly heritage. 8 I will thank the Lord for giving me warning: my reins also chasten me in the night-season. 9 I have set God always before me: for he is on my right hand, therefore I shall not fall. 10 Wherefore my heart was glad, and my glory rejoiced: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 11 For why? thou shalt not leave my soul in hell: neither shalt thou suffer thy Holy One to see corruption. 12 Thou shalt shew me the path of life; in thy presence is the fulness of joy: and at thy right hand there is pleasure for evermore. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Chant: William H. Havergal ( ?) FIRST READING: Daniel 2.1-6, 10-12, Read by Philip Nicholls, Director of Music In the second year of Nebuchadnezzar s reign, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed such dreams that his spirit was troubled and his sleep left him. 2 So the king commanded that the magicians, the enchanters, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans be summoned to tell the king his dreams. When they came in and stood before the king, 3 he said to them, I have had such a dream that my spirit is troubled by the desire to understand it. 4 The Chaldeans said to the king (in Aramaic), O king, live for ever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will reveal the interpretation. 5 The king answered the Chaldeans, This is a public decree: if you do not tell me both the dream and its interpretation, you shall be torn limb from limb, and your houses shall be laid in ruins. 6 But if you do tell me the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts and rewards and great honour. Therefore tell me the dream and its interpretation. 3

10 The Chaldeans answered the king, There is no one on earth who can reveal what the king demands! In fact no king, however great and powerful, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean. 11 The thing that the king is asking is too difficult, and no one can reveal it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals. 12 Because of this the king flew into a violent rage and commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be destroyed. 26 The king said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Are you able to tell me the dream that I have seen and its interpretation? 27 Daniel answered the king, No wise men, enchanters, magicians, or diviners can show to the king the mystery that the king is asking, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has disclosed to King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen at the end of days. Your dream and the visions of your head as you lay in bed were these: 29 To you, O king, as you lay in bed, came thoughts of what would be hereafter, and the revealer of mysteries disclosed to you what is to be. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE MAGNIFICAT The Song of Mary, St Luke Please Stand My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Music: Evening Service in F Harold Friedell ( ) SECOND READING: John Read by Canon Campbell Bairstow 9 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! 11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around 4

the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, 12 singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen. 13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? 14 I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; 17 for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. NUNC DIMITTIS The Song of Simeon, St Luke Please Stand Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation; Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. THE APOSTLES CREED Music: Evening Service in F Friedell Please Stand I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. The Officiant and Choir sing THE LESSER LITANY The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Webster Please sit/kneel 5

Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen. THE VERSICLE AND RESPONSES Webster O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. THE COLLECTS O God, whose blessed Son was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: grant us, we beseech thee, that having this hope, we may purify ourselves, even as he is pure, that when he shall appear again with power and great glory we may be made like unto him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where with thee, O Father, and thee, O Holy Spirit, he liveth and reigneth, one God, now and forever. Amen O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. 6

THE ANTHEM Bring us, O Lord God William Harris ( ) Sung by the Choir Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening into the house and gate of heaven, to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears nor hopes, but one equal possession; no ends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity; in the habitation of thy glory and dominion, world without end. Amen. Words: John Donne ( ) Music: William H Harris ( ) THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Concluding with THE GRACE The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, evermore. Amen. THE NOTICES THE HYMN BEFORE THE SERMON Please Stand During the hymn, an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry. On average our congregants contribute $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. Tap and go facilities is available on the plate. 2 Lord of all power, I give you my will, in joyful obedience your tasks to fulfill. Your bondage is freedom; your service is song; and, held in your keeping, my weakness is strong. 3 Lord of all wisdom, I give you my mind: rich truth that surpasses our knowledge to find, what eye has not seen and what ear has not heard is taught by your Spirit and shines from your word. 7

4 Lord of all bounty, I give you my heart; I praise and adore you for all you impart, your love to inspire me, your counsel to guide, your presence to shield me, whatever betide. 5 Lord of all being, I give you my all; if ever I leave you, I stumble and fall; but, led in your service your word to obey, I ll walk in your freedom to the end of the way. Jack Copley Winslow ( ) alt. Together in Song 626. Reproduced with permission. THE SERMON The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, Dean THE DISMISSAL HYMN Please Stand 2 O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, with ever joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us; and keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all ills in this world and the next. 3 All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, the Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven, the One eternal God, whom earth and heav n adore; for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. Martin Rinkart ( ), tr. Catherine Winkworth ( ) New English Hymnal 413 8

PLEASE PRAY WITH US FOR THE WORLD The people of California, for comfort for those who have lost oved ones, homes and livelihoods in the forest fires; peace between Israel and Gaza; mercy and help for refugees around the world, the removal of the children in detention in Nauru; swift international assistance for the starving in Yemen. THOSE SUFFERING FROM DROUGHT Our heavenly Father, we acknowledge our ingratitude when we have taken your goodness for granted, when the heaven has poured forth rain and the earth has produced its fruit. Yet now we cry to you for help, as the drought in Australia deepens. Have mercy on our land; have mercy on the people of the land. May your bountiful hand send forth rain upon our parched earth. Fulfil your promises that while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease, so that those in remote and rural areas may find relief from their distress and glorify your name for the provision of their needs. We ask this in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION Anglican Church of Bermuda (Bp Nicholas Dill). CELEBRATING ST CECILIA S DAY Inside your orders of service is a donation form for The St Paul s Cathedral Music Foundation. Today we make the annual invitation for you to make a tax-deductible donation to the St Paul s Cathedral Music Foundation. Since 1993, St Paul s Cathedral Music Foundation has supported the musical life of St Paul s Cathedral Melbourne. Last year, the Foundation made generous grants of $200,000 to support the Cathedral s rich musical life. In 2018 we are hoping to increase that figure. The grants fund scholarships that directly benefit the Cathedral s musicians: most importantly, the musical formation and education of our boy and girl choristers. In order to sustain such a significant level of financial commitment, the Foundation fully relies on the support of generous donors. You can leave the completed donation forms with Ms Leigh Mackay, Director Philanthropy, on your way out and receive your I support Cathedral Music Badge. CONGREGATION LUNCH TODAY!
