1 St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Family-style Eucharist with the Baptism of Tanya and Tashvi Saramsetty Trinity Sunday 27 May am 9 WELCOME Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, the home for worshippers from more than two dozen nations, the seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia and the home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. We are delighted that you are with us this morning: come and worship with us again. A particular welcome to Tanya and Tashvi Saramsetty and their family. They are to be baptised today. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please make yourself known to our clergy. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past, present and emerging and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. 2 THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Jesus said: This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself. Let us therefore bring our sins before the one true God, in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O blessed Trinity, in whom we know the Maker of all things, seen and unseen, the Saviour of all, both near and far: by your Spirit enable us so to worship your divine majesty, that with all the company of heaven we may magnify your glorious name, saying, Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord most high. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The people are seated for the readings and psalm. THE FIRST READING Isaiah Eileen Hastie 1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. 4 The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts! 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out. 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I; send me! THE SECOND READING Romans So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: to God who is, and who was, and who is to come. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 3 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. 3 Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. 4 Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother s womb and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. 8 The windblows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. 6 to him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. THE SERMON The Canon Pastor THE BAPTISM The Revd Canon Christopher Carolane INTRODUCTION PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATE I invite Tanya and Tashvi s godparents to present them for baptism. Godparents: We present Tanya and Tashvi to be baptised. Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Tanya and Tashvi to baptism? Godparents: I will. Are you willing to answer on them behalf? Godparents: I am. By your own prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage them in the life and faith of the Christian community? Godparents: I will, with God s help. THE DECISION Before God and this gathering I invite you to affirm that you turn to Christ and reject all that is evil, and so I ask: Do you turn to Christ? Parents and Godparents I turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? Parents and Godparents I repent of my sins. 6

7 Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust? Parents and Godparents I reject them all. Do you renounce Satan and all evil? Parents and Godparents I renounce all that is evil. Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness and lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting Kingdom. Amen. Will you each, by God s grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life s end. Parents and Godparents I will, with God s help. Let us pray. Grant, merciful God, that these children Tanya and Tashvi may be so buried with Christ in baptism that the new nature may be raised up in them. May the fruit of your Spirit grow and flourish in them. Amen. May Tanya and Tashvi know Christ s forgiving love and continue in the fellowship and service of his Church. May they proclaim, by word and example, the good news of God in Christ. Amen. THE BLESSING OF THE WATER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks that you have called Tanya and Tashvi to new birth into your church through the waters of baptism. Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that, being baptised in it, they may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. May they die to sin, rise to newness of life, and continue for ever in Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we give you praise and honour, in the unity of the Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. I now ask you to affirm as yours the faith of the Church. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. 7

8 Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE BAPTISM Tanya/Tashvi, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The priest makes the sign of the cross on Tanya and Tashvi and says Tanya and Tashvi, I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ s own for ever. Live as disciples of Christ: fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. All respond Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Presenting each a lighted candle the priest says to Tanya and Tashvi God has brought you out of darkness into his marvellous light. All respond Shine as lights in the world to the glory of God the Father. God has called you into his Church. All respond We therefore receive and welcome you as members with us of the body of Christ, as children of the one heavenly Father and as an inheritor of the Kingdom of God. THE PRAYERS Heavenly Father, we pray for Tanya s and Tashvi s parents, Chandra and Suneela, in their parenting of their girls, whom we have baptised in your name. Give to them the spirit of wisdom and love. May Tanya and Tashvi grow up to love and reverence you and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. Amen. God of truth and love, we pray for Tanya s and Tashvi s godparents Roslyn, Tony and Margaret. Enable them to share with their god children what you have revealed in your holy gospel. 10 THE HOLY COMMUNION THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The president offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ, and in response we sing together: Matthias (b.1954), Christ Church Mass The president recalls the Last Supper, and a minister introduces the following acclamation Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The prayer continues, and concludes:... in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours, for ever and ever. Amen. 10

11 THE LORD S PRAYER Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language, Notre Père..., Padre nuestro..., Vater unser..., 我們在天上的父 Bapa kami..., E to matou Matua..., 天の父よ... Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. THE INVITATION The gifts of God for the people of God. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. All baptised Christians are invited to receive the bread and the wine of the Eucharist. Please tell the priest if you prefer to receive a gluten free wafer or a blessing. Please keep your valuables with you. THE SENDING OUT OF GOD S PEOPLE Said by the president and people, standing. Almighty and eternal god, may we who have received this sacrament of your Son s body and blood worship you in all we do, proclaim your word to all the world, and live in the power of your spirit. THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. The speaker will be The Reverend Dr. Joy Sandefur, who has spent much of her ministry working amongst Aboriginal people. Her subject will be Indigenous Spirituality. YAKAMA YAPANEYEPUK (COME TOGETHER) EXHIBITION Aboriginal artists from Kaiela Arts Shepparton have collaborated with St Paul s Cathedral s Sean Whittaker to develop this exhibition which responds to the concept of 'Coming Together'. The Exhibition will be open daily 26 May - 22 June in the Transept Gallery. You are invited to attending the Exhibition Opening on 31 May 6.00pm (RSVP by 28 April to events@stpaulscathedral.org.au) CURRY COLLECTION The Curry Collection of plates has been in place for about 20 years during which time the display has not changed. The time for renewal has come. A small group of people led by the Honorary Cathedral Archivist, Dorothea Rowse, is planning to refurbish the display in the cabinets, with the work to take place in July. One cabinet will be used for the plates and the other for Cathedral treasures. The goal is to enrich the displays in the cabinets to make them more relevant to the casual visitor. If anyone would like to join us or to discuss the project please speak to Dorothea. USING OUR TAP & GO TECHNOLOGY Our new collection plates are fitted with a tap and go device, allowing you to make your offering via credit card if you wish just hold your card (don t swipe it) against the paywave symbol until you hear a beep, and the message thank you for your donation flashes up on the screen. The devices are set at $20, which is the average weekly contribution made by regular worshippers. Tap and go facilities are also integrated into our Chapel of Unity, and at several other donation points around the Cathedral.
