Please join in singing the hymns and in saying the words printed in bold type. GATHERING IN GOD S NAME Please stand for the hymn THE WELCOME 2 Lo, God s high herald, swift from heav n descending, gives to thy father tidings of thy coming, telling thy name, and all the tale of marvels that shall befall thee. 3 Oft had the prophets in the time before thee spoken in vision of the Daystar s coming; but when he came, twas thou that didst proclaim him our holy Saviour. The Officiant welcomes the people and then sings Paul the Deacon (730-99) trans. C. S. Phillips ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 315 alt. THE RESPONSES William Byrd (c ) O Lord, open thou our lips; and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. 2

PSALM 2 Choir Please Sit 1 Why do the heathen so furiously rage together: and why do the people imagine a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth stand up, and the rulers take counsel together: against the Lord, and against his Anointed. 3 Let us break their bonds asunder: and cast away their cords from us. 4 He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh them to scorn: the Lord shall have them in derision. 5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath: and vex them in his sore displeasure. 6 Yet have I set my King: upon my holy hill of Sion. 7 I will preach the law, whereof the Lord hath said unto me: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. 8 Desire of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance: and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9 Thou shalt bruise them with a rod of iron: and break them in pieces like a potter s vessel. 10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be learned, ye that are judges of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord in fear: and rejoice unto him with reverence. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and so ye perish from the right way: if his wrath be kindled, (yea, but a little,) blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Chant: John Goss ( ) FIRST READING: Isaiah Read by David Forbes 15 I am the LORD, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King. 16 Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, 17 who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior, they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: 18 Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. 19 I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 20 The wild animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, 21 the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

THE MAGNIFICAT The Choir sings Please Stand The Song of Mary, St Luke My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Music: Short Evening Service Orlando Gibbons ( ) SECOND READING: John Read by Canon Neil Sigamoney 19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? 20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, I am not the Messiah. 21 And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? He said, I am not. Are you the prophet? He answered, No. 22 Then they said to him, Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? 23 He said, I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said. 24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. NUNC DIMITTIS The Choir sings Please Stand The Song of Simeon, St Luke Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation; Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Music: Short Service Gibbons 4

THE APOSTLES CREED Please Stand I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. The Officiant and Choir sing THE LESSER LITANY The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Byrd Please sit/kneel Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen. THE VERSICLE AND RESPONSES Byrd O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. 5

THE COLLECTS O Lord, we beseech thee mercifully to receive the prayers of thy people which call upon thee; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE ANTHEM O Quam Gloriosum William Byrd (c ) Sung by the Choir Translation: O how glorious is the kingdom wherein all the Saints rejoice with Christ; arrayed in white robes they follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth, praising God and saying: Benediction and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving, honour and power and strength, to our God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Concluding with THE GRACE The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, evermore. Amen.
