St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, home to worshippers from more than two dozen nations, seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia, and home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. We are delighted that you are with us today: come and worship with us again. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please make yourself known to our clergy. Amen 2

FIRST READING Acts , In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred and twenty people) and said, 16 Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus 17 for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us throughout the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection. 23 So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed and said, Lord, you know everyone s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 1 At 8am and 9am the reader and congregation say alternate verses. At 10.30am the Psalm is sung by the Choir. 1 Blessed are they who have not walked in the counsel of the ungodly: nor followed the way of sinners, nor taken their seat amongst the scornful. 2 But their delight is in the law of the Lord: and on that law will they ponder day and night. 3 They are like trees planted beside streams of water: that yield their fruit in due season. 4 Their leaves also shall not wither: and look, whatever they do, it shall prosper. 5 As for the ungodly, it is not so with them: they are like the chaff which the wind scatters. 6 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand up at the judgement: nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 7 For the Lord cares for the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. SECOND READING 1 John If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. 10 Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his 3

Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING John At 10.30am, the cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat. Alleluia! Alleluia! I am the way, the truth, and the life, says the Lord: no one comes to the Father, except through me. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 6 Jesus said to his disciples I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8 for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 4

Officiant The Revd Emily Fraser Preacher: The Ven. Ray McInnes Readers: David Forbes and Canon Michael Shand QC Introit Hymn: Now is eternal life (hymn 2, pg. 10) Collection Hymn: Crown him with many crowns (hymn 7, pg. 14) Dismissal Hymn: Now thank we all our God (hymn 4, pg. 12) Responses: William Byrd (c ) Psalm Chant: Joseph Barnby ( ) Setting: Short Evening Service Thomas Tallis (c ) Anthem: Jesu, joy of man s desiring Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Jesu, joy of man s desiring, holy wisdom, love most bright. Drawn by thee our souls aspiring, soar to uncreated light. Word of God our flesh that fashioned, with the fire of life impassioned, striving still to truth unknown, soaring, dying round thy throne. Postlude: Chorale Prelude on Gelobt sei Gott [God be praised] Healey Willan ( ): Mr Mark Slavec, June Nixon Organ Scholar PSALM 24 Sung by the Choir 1 The earth is the Lord s, and all that therein is: the compass of the world, and they that dwell therein. 2 For he hath founded it upon the seas: and prepared it upon the floods. 3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord: or who shall rise up in his holy place? 4 Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart: and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity, nor sworn to deceive his neighbour. 5 He shall receive the blessing from the Lord: and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 This is the generation of them that seek him: even of them that seek thy face, O Jacob. 7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is the King of glory: it is the Lord strong and mighty, even the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is the King of glory: even the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. 5

FIRST READING Genesis When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and routed them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his nephew Lot with his goods, and the women and the people. 17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King s Valley). 18 And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. 19 He blessed him and said, Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand! And Abram gave him one-tenth of everything. SECOND READING John Jesus said to his disciples A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me. 17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, What does he mean by saying to us, A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me ; and Because I am going to the Father? 18 They said, What does he mean by this a little while? We do not know what he is talking about. 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me? 20 Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is in labour, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. 22 So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 On that day you will ask nothing of me. Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. COLLECT FOR THE SUNDAY AFTER ASCENSION O GOD the King of glory, who hast exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph unto thy kingdom in heaven: We beseech thee, leave us not comfortless; but send to us thine Holy Ghost to comfort us, and exalt us unto the same place whither our Saviour Christ is gone before, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen. 6

In addition to thanking so many people who came, some from considerable distances, they would like to thank those who provided food and helped with the refreshments, those who arranged the flowers, played and sang the music of the liturgy along with the Cathedral staff. 10 HYMN 1: HAIL THOU ONCE DESPISED JESUS John Bakewell ( ) and others Australian Hymn Book Paschal Lamb by God appointed, all our sins on thee were laid; by almighty love anointed, thou hast full atonement made: all thy people are forgiven through the virtue of thy blood; opened is the gate of heaven; reconciled are we to God. 3 Jesus, hail! Enthroned in glory, there for ever to abide; all the heav nly host adore thee, seated at the Father s side: there for sinners thou art pleading, there thou dost our place prepare, ever for us interceding till in glory we appear. HYMN 2: NOW IS ETERNAL LIFE George Wallace Briggs ( ) alt. Together in Song

2 For God, the living God, stooped down to share our state; by death destroying death Christ opened wide life s gate. He lives, who died; he reigns on high; who live in him shall never die. 3 Unfathomed love divine, come reign within my heart; from you no depth or height, not life or death can part; my life with you in God shall be, now and through all eternity. HYMN 3: LORD ENTHRONED IN HEAVENLY SPLENDOUR George Hugh Bourne ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 263i 2 Here our humblest homage pay we; here in loving reverence bow; here for Faith s discernment pray we, lest we fail to know thee now. Alleluia, alleluia, thou art here, we ask not how. 3 Though the lowliest form doth veil thee as of old in Bethlehem, here as there thy angels hail thee, Branch and Flower of Jesse s stem. Alleluia, alleluia, we in worship join with them. 6 Life-imparting heavenly Manna, stricken Rock with streaming side, heaven and earth with loud hosanna worship thee, the Lamb who died, alleluia, alleluia, risen, ascended, glorified! 4 Paschal Lamb, thine offering, finished once for all when thou wast slain, in its fullness undiminished shall for evermore remain, alleluia, alleluia, cleansing souls from every stain. 5 Great High Priest of our profession through the veil thou enteredst in; by thy mighty intercession grace and mercy thou canst win, alleluia, alleluia, only sacrifice for sin. 11

HYMN 4: NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD Martin Rinkart ( ), tr. Catherine Winkworth ( ) New English Hymnal O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, with ever joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us; and keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all ills in this world and the next. 3 All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, the Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven, the One eternal God, whom earth and heav n adore; for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. HYMN 5: JESUS WE THUS OBEY Charles Wesley ( ) alt. Together in Song Our hearts we open wide, to make the Saviour room; for now the Lamb, the crucified, the sinner s friend has come. 3 Your presence makes the feast; now let our spirits feel the glory not to be expressed, the joy unspeakable. 4 With high and heavenly bliss you now our spirits cheer; your house of banqueting is this, and you have brought us here. 5 Now let our souls be fed with manna from above, and over us your banner spread of everlasting love. 12

HYMN 6: LORD, THE LIGHT OF YOUR LOVE IS SHINING Graham Kendrick (b.1950) Together in Song 675 Reproduced with permission Lord, I come to your awesome presence, from the shadows into your radiance; by your blood I may enter your brightness: search me, try me, consume all my darkness shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine,... As we gaze on your kingly brightness so our faces display your likeness, ever changing from glory to glory: mirrored here, may our lives tell your story shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine,... 13

HYMN 7: CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS Matthew Bridges ( ) and Godfrey Thring ( ) alt. Together in Song Crown him the Lord of love; behold his hands and side, those wounds yet visible above in beauty glorified: no angel there on high can fully bear that sight, but downwards bends a burning eye at mysteries so bright. 3 Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o er the grave, and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save: his glories now we sing who died, and rose on high; who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. 4 Crown him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, majestic and sublime: all hail, Redeemer, hail! for you have died for me; your praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity. 14
