St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, home to worshippers from more than two dozen nations, seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia, and home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. We are delighted that you are with us today: come and worship with us again. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please make yourself known to our clergy. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past and present and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. 8AM BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER HOLY COMMUNION President and Preacher: The Revd Canon Christopher Carolane, Canon Pastor Reader: Jenny Liggett Chant during Communion (sung a number of times): Richard Connolly (b.1927), Together in Song 529, Reproduced with kind permission of Richard Connolly 1

This joyous day, dear Lord, with joy begin, and grant that we for whom thou didest die, being with thy dear blood clean washed from sin, may live forever in felicity. Organ Postlude: Easter Alleluya: Lasst uns erfreuen Gordon Slater ( ): Mrs Roslyn Carolane, Assistant Organist COLLECT O God, form the minds of your faithful people, that we may love what you command and desire what you promise, so that, amid the many changes of this world, our hearts may there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING Acts 8 : Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, Get up and go towards the south * to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. (This is a wilderness road.) 27 So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go over to this chariot and join it. 30 So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, Do you understand what you are reading? 31 He replied, How can I, unless 2
someone guides me? And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. 32 Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. 34 The eunuch asked Philip, About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? 35 Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized? * 38 He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip * baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 22 : At 8am and 9am the reader and congregation say alternate verses. At 10.30am the Psalm is sung by the Choir. 26 From you springs my praise in the great congregation: I will pay my vows in the sight of all that fear you; 27 The meek shall eat of the sacrifice and be satisfied: and those who seek the Lord shall praise him may their hearts rejoice for ever! 28 Let all the ends of the earth remember and turn to the Lord: and let all the families of the nations worship before him. 29 For the kingdom is the Lord s: and he shall be ruler over the nations. 30 How can those who sleep in the earth do him homage: or those that descend to the dust bow down before him? 31 But he has saved my life for himself: and my posterity shall serve him. 32 This shall be told of my Lord to a future generation: and his righteousness declared to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. SECOND READING 1 John 4 : Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 God s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God 3
but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Saviour of the world. 15 God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. 16 So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. 17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgement, because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Those who say, I love God, and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 21 The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING John 15 : 1-8 At 10.30am, the cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat. Alleluia! Alleluia! Live in me and let me live in you, says the Lord; my branches bear much fruit. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. 2 He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3 You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, 4
and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Officiant The Revd Emily Fraser Preacher: The Revd Stephen Ames Readers: Mia Costanzo (Head Chorister) and Canon Rob Deutscher Introit Hymn: Christ is alive (hymn 3, pg. 12) Collection Hymn: I am the Light (hymn 1, pg. 11) Dismissal Hymn: God is Love (hymn 5, pg. 13) Responses: June Nixon Psalm Chant: George Garrett ( ) Setting: Evening Service in C Bryan Kelly (b.1934) Anthem: Ye choirs of new Jerusalem Charles Villiers Stanford ( ) Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, your sweetest notes employ, the Pascal victory to hymn in strains of holy joy. Triumphant in his glory now to him all power is given; to him in one communion bow all saints in earth and heaven. For Judah s Lion bursts his chains, crushing the serpent s head; and cries aloud through death s domains to wake the imprisoned dead. While we his soldiers praise our King, his mercies we implore, within his palace bright to bring and keep us evermore. Devouring depths of hell their prey at his command restore; his ransomed hosts pursue their way where Jesus goes before. All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost, to thee, while endless ages run. Alleluia. Amen. Postlude: The Fifth of the Six Short Preludes & Postludes, Op.101 Charles Villiers Stanford ( ): Mr Siegfried Franke, Cathedral Organist 5
PSALM 98 Sung by the choir 1 O sing unto the Lord a new song: for he hath done marvellous things. 2 With his own right hand, and with his holy arm: hath he gotten himself the victory. 3 The Lord declared his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen. 4 He hath remembered his mercy and truth toward the house of Israel: and all the ends of the world have seen the salvation of our God. 5 Shew yourselves joyful unto the Lord, all ye lands: sing, rejoice, and give thanks. 6 Praise the Lord upon the harp: sing to the harp with a psalm of thanksgiving. 7 With trumpets also, and shawms: O shew yourselves joyful before the Lord the King. 8 Let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is: the round world, and they that dwell therein. 9 Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the Lord: for he is come to judge the earth. 10 With righteousness shall he judge the world: and the people with equity. FIRST READING Acts 13 : 16a, So Paul stood up and with a gesture began to speak: You Israelites, and others who fear God, listen. 26 My brothers, you descendants of Abraham s family, and others who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent. 27 Because the residents of Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize him or understand the words of the prophets that are read every sabbath, they fulfilled those words by condemning him. 28 Even though they found no cause for a sentence of death, they asked Pilate to have him killed. 29 When they had carried out everything that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead; 31 and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, and they are now his witnesses to the people. 32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to our ancestors 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 34 As to his raising him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way, I will give you the holy promises made to David. 35 Therefore he has also said in another psalm, You will not let your Holy One experience corruption. 36 For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, died, was laid beside his ancestors, and experienced 6
corruption; 37 but he whom God raised up experienced no corruption. 38 Let it be known to you therefore, my brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you; 39 by this Jesus everyone who believes is set free from all those sins from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. 40 Beware, therefore, that what the prophets said does not happen to you: 41 Look, you scoffers! Be amazed and perish, for in your days I am doing a work, a work that you will never believe, even if someone tells you. 42 As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people urged them to speak about these things again the next sabbath. 43 When the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God. SECOND READING 1 John 4 : Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming; and now it is already in the world. 4 Little children, you are from God, and have conquered them; for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not listen to us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. COLLECT FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER EASTER O Almighty God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 7

HYMN 1: I AM THE LIGHT, WHOSE BRIGHTNESS SHINES Robert Willis (b.1947) Hymns Ancient and Modern (2013) 665 Reproduced with permission 2 I am the gate that leads to life along the narrow way, the Shepherd who will tend my sheep that none are lost or stray. 3 I am the Well from whose fresh springs life-giving water flows and on each side the tree of life with leaves for healing grows. 4 I am the Bread, God s gift from heaven, sent down to satisfy the hunger which cries out for food; who eats shall never die. 5 I am the Vine whose branches grow united in one root; who dwell in me, and I in them, shall live and bear much fruit. 6 I am the Resurrection life, the power of God whereby whoever truly trusts in me shall live and never die. 7 I am the Way, the Truth, the Life, and truth shall set you free to seek and find the way to life and live that life in me. 11
HYMN 2: BREAD OF HEAVEN ON THEE WE FEED Josiah Conder ( ) New English Hymnal 267ii Vine of heaven, thy blood supplies this blest cup of sacrifice; tis thy wounds our healing give; to thy cross we look and live: thou our life! O let us be rooted, grafted, built on thee. HYMN 3: CHRIST IS ALIVE Pamela Stotter (b.1944) Together in Song 393. Reproduced with permission 2 He is the grain of wheat that died, sown in distress and reaped in joy, yielding a harvest of new life. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 3 He is the sun which brings the dawn: he is the light of all the world, setting us free from death and sin. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 6 4 He is the vine set in the earth, sharing our life, from birth to death, that we might share in God s own life. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 5 He is the bread that comes from God, broken to feed us in our need, given to bring eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 12
Christ is alive, with joy we sing; we celebrate our risen Lord, praising the glory of his name. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. HYMN 4: LIGHT S REDDENING DAWN Latin, 8 th century, tr. John Mason Neale ( ) alt. Together in Song 360 That Eastertide with joy was bright, the sun shone out with fairer light, alleluia, alleluia! when to their longing eyes restored the apostles saw their risen Lord. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! He showed to them his hands, his side, where yet the glorious wounds abide: alleluia, alleluia! the tokens true which made it plain their Lord indeed was risen again. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! From every weapon death can wield your own redeemed for ever shield: alleluia, alleluia! O Lord of all, with us abide in this our joyful Eastertide. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! 13
HYMN 5: GOD IS LOVE Timothy Rees ( ) alt. Together in Song 153 alt. 2 God is love, with grace enfolding all the world in one embrace, with unfailing grasp is holding every child of every race. And when human hearts are breaking under sorrow s iron rod, then they find that selfsame aching deep within the heart of God. 3 God is love, and, though with blindness sin afflicts our human hearts, God s eternal lovingkindness holding, guiding, grace imparts. Sin and death and hell shall never o er us final triumph gain; God is love, so love for ever o er the universe must reign. 14
