We acknowledge and pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. THE LIGHTING OF THE SECOND CANDLE ON THE ADVENT WREATH The second burning candle represents the hope for salvation and peace in the universal messianic kingdom foretold by the prophets. After the candle is lit the following prayer is said. Lord Jesus, light of the world, the prophets said you would bring peace and save your people in trouble. Give peace in our hearts at Christmas and show all the world God s love. Amen. THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Choir Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us, Lord have mercy upon us. 3 The Lord comes, bringing to light things now hidden in darkness, and disclosing the purposes of the heart. Let us open our hearts and prepare for his coming, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE COLLECT God of our salvation, you straighten the winding ways of our hearts and smooth the paths made rough by sin: keep our hearts watchful in holiness, and bring to perfection the good you have begun in us. We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose Day draws near, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. 4 PSALM: THE SONG OF ZECHARIAH (BENEDICTUS) Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel: you have come to your people and set them free. You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of your servant David. Through your holy prophets, you promised of old: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, To show mercy to our forebears: and to remember your holy covenant. This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship you without fear: holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way, To give God s people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins. The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5

The president recounts the last supper In faith we acclaim you, O Christ: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. The president concludes the Eucharistic Prayer, to which all respond...in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language, Notre Père..., Padre nuestro..., Vater unser..., 我們在天上的父 Bapa kami..., E to matou Matua..., 天の父よ..., Our Father who art, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. 9 THE DISMISSAL HYMN 2 God s kingdom is upon you! the message sounds today, it summons every pilgrim to take the questing way, with eyes intent on Jesus, our leader and our friend, who trod faith s road before us, and trod it to the end. 3 The kingdom is upon us! Stirred by the Spirit s breath, we glory in its freedom from emptiness and death; we celebrate its purpose, its mission and its goal, alive with the conviction that Christ can make us whole. 10 PLEASE PRAY WITH US FOR THE WORLD The success of the UN sponsored peace talk for Yemen in Sweden, and for provision of daily needs for the people of Yemen dealing with civil war and starvation from famine; improved relationship between Russia and Ukraine; those who have lost homes and livelihoods through bush fires this week; improvement in the relationship between the Israeli Government and Palestinians living on the Gaza Strip; safety and provision of daily needs for refugees around the world, the removal of children and adult refugees from Nauru. THOSE SUFFERING FROM DROUGHT Our heavenly Father, we acknowledge our ingratitude when we have taken your goodness for granted, when the heaven has poured forth rain and the earth has produced its fruit. Yet now we cry to you for help, as the drought in Australia deepens. Have mercy on our land; have mercy on the people of the land. May your bountiful hand send forth rain upon our parched earth. Fulfil your promises that while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease, so that those in remote and rural areas may find relief from their distress and glorify your name for the provision of their needs.
