St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Choral Eucharist with Holy Baptism Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost 30 September am WELCOME to St Paul s Cathedral, the home for worshippers from more than two dozen nations, the seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia and the home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. A special welcome to Isabella Turner and her family who will be baptised this morning. Whether you are Anglican, or from another tradition, you are most welcome. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please ask one of our clergy. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past and present and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. Please join us in singing the hymns and saying those parts of the service printed in bold type. Please ensure that mobile phones and other devices are switched off. GATHERING IN GOD S NAME THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN Sung by all Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord, be thou my great Father, thy child let me be, be thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

THE GREETING Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight, be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might, be thou my soul s shelter, be thou my strong tower, O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise, be thou my inheritance now and always, be thou and thou only the first in my heart, O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, thou heaven s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after vict ry is won, great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all. Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God s kingdom now and forever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The people are seated or kneel. Irish, 8th century, tr. Mary Byrne ( ) Versified by Eleanor Hull ( ) New English Hymnal 339 The Choir sings LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie eleison Canterbury Mass Anthony Piccolo (b.1946) Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses: let us then run our race, laying aside every weight and bringing our sins to the Lord in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 2

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE Sung by the choir Canterbury Mass Piccolo Gloria in excelsis Deo Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Let us pray. O God, your Son has taught us that those who give a cup of water in his name will not lose their reward: open our eyes to see those who are in need, and teach us to set no store by riches and earthly rewards, so that, in surrendering ourselves to serve you in your children, we may labour for the treasure that endures; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The people are seated for the readings and psalm. THE FIRST READING Esther 7.1-6, 9-10; Mr Bruce Tonge 1 So the king and Haman went in to feast with Queen Esther. 2 On the second day, as they were drinking wine, the king again said to Esther, What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled. 3 Then Queen Esther answered, If I have won your favour, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me that is my petition and the lives of my people that is my request. 4 For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. If we had 3

been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have held my peace; but no enemy can compensate for this damage to the king. 5 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther, Who is he, and where is he, who has presumed to do this? 6 Esther said, A foe and enemy, this wicked Haman! Then Haman was terrified before the king and the queen. 9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs in attendance on the king, said, Look, the very gallows that Haman has prepared for Mordecai, whose word saved the king, stands at Haman s house, fifty cubits high. And the king said, Hang him on that. 10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the anger of the king abated. 20 Mordecai recorded these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 enjoining them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same month, year by year, 22 as the days on which the Jews gained relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and presents to the poor. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 24 Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated If the Lord had not been on our side, now may Israel say: if the Lord had not been on our side, when our enemies rose against us, Then they would have swallowed us alive: when their anger was kindled against us. Response Then the waters would have overwhelmed us, and the torrent gone over us: the raging waters would have gone clean over us. But praised be the Lord: who has not given us as a prey to their teeth. Response We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler: the snare is broken, and we have gone free. Our help is in the name of the Lord: who has made heaven and earth. Response Music: Anthony Gregory Murray ( ) Reproduced from Together in Song 57 with permission 4

THE SECOND READING James Canon Campbell Bairstow 12 Above all, my beloved, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your Yes be yes and your No be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. 13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest. 19 My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, 20 you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. The people stand to sing and remain standing for the Gospel. 5

THE GRADUAL HYMN 2 In Christ shall true hearts everywhere their high communion find, his service is the golden cord close-binding humankind. 3 Join hands, then, people of the faith, whate er your race may be; who serves my Father as his child is surely kin to me. 4 In Christ now meet both east and west, in him meet south and north, all Christlike souls are one in him throughout the whole wide earth. The cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat. William Arthur Dunkerley ( John Oxenham ) ( ) alt. Together in Song 459ii Alleluia! Alleluia! Plead my cause and set me free: O give me life, according to your word. Alleluia! THE HOLY GOSPEL St Mark The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 12 Above all, my beloved, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your Yes be yes and your No be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. 13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise 6

them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. THE SERMON Mr Philip Nicholls, Director of Music Silence may be kept. The people stand. THE BAPTISM The Revd Canon Heather Patacca, Canon Precentor INTRODUCTION PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATE I invite Isabella s godparents to present her for baptism. Godparents: We present Isabella Rose Turner to be baptised. Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Isabella to baptism? Godparents: I will. Are you willing to answer on her behalf? Godparents: I am. By your own prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage her in the life and faith of the Christian community? Godparents: I will, with God s help. THE DECISION Before God and this gathering I invite you to affirm that you turn to Christ and reject all that is evil, and so I ask: Do you turn to Christ? Parents and Godparents I turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? Parents and Godparents I repent of my sins. 7

Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust? Parents and Godparents I reject them all. Do you renounce Satan and all evil? Parents and Godparents I renounce all that is evil. Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness and lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting Kingdom. Amen. Will you each, by God s grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life s end. Parents and Godparents I will, with God s help. Let us pray. Grant, merciful God, that Isabella may be so buried with Christ in baptism that the new nature may be raised up in her. May the fruit of your Spirit grow and flourish in her. Amen. May Isabella know Christ s forgiving love and continue in the fellowship and service of his Church. May she proclaim, by word and example, the good news of God in Christ. Amen. THE BLESSING OF THE WATER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks that you have called Isabella to new birth into your church through the waters of baptism. Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that, being baptised in it, she may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. May she die to sin, rise to newness of life, and continue for ever in Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we give you praise and honour, in the unity of the Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. I now ask you all to join in affirm as yours the faith of the Church. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. 8

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE BAPTISM Isabella Rose Turner, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The priest makes the sign of the cross on Isabella s forehead and says Isabella, I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ s own for ever. Live as a disciple of Christ: fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. All respond Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Presenting a lighted candle the priest says to Isabella God has brought you out of darkness into his marvellous light. All respond Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. God has called you into his Church. All respond We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as child of the one heavenly Father and as an inheritor of the Kingdom of God. THE PRAYERS Heavenly Father, we pray for Isabella s parents, Glenn and Bianca, in their parenting of Isabella, whom we have baptised in your name. Give to them the spirit of wisdom and love. May Isabella grow up to love and reverence you and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. Amen. God of truth and love, we pray for Isabella s godparents. Enable them to share with their god daughter what you have revealed in your holy gospel. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. THE NOTICES Please stand for THE GREETING OF PEACE We are the body of Christ. His Spirit us with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 9

The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then remain standing for the hymn, during which an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry of sharing God s love with the world. Thank you for your gift. 2 Thy brightness unto them appears, whilst I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face. They sing because thou art their sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun there alleluias be. 4 How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep. Thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere. 3 Enlighten with faith s light my heart, inflame it with love s fire; then shall I sing and bear a part with that celestial choir. I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite. John Mason ( ) Common Praise

THE HOLY COMMUNION Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom: Blessed be God for ever. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. The president offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ, and in response the choir sing: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD Sanctus and Benedictus Canterbury Mass Piccolo Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The prayer continues, and concludes:... in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours, for ever and ever. Amen. 11

THE LORD S PRAYER Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language: Notre Père..., Padre nuestro..., Vater unser..., 我們在天上的父 Bapa kami..., E to matou Matua..., 天の父よ... Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. O LAMB OF GOD Sung by the choir Canterbury Mass Piccolo Agnus Dei Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. THE INVITATION The gifts of God for the people of God: come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. All baptised Christians are invited to receive the bread and the wine of the Eucharist. Please tell the priest if you prefer to receive a gluten free wafer or a blessing. The choir sings THE ANTHEM DURING COMMUNION O quam gloriosum William Byrd (c ) O how glorious is the kingdom wherein all the saints rejoice with Christ; clothed in white robes, they follow the Lamb wherever he goes, praising God and saying: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, virtue, and might be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. 12

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD S PEOPLE THE POST COMMUNION PRAYER Gracious God, in baptism you make us one family in Christ your Son, one in the sharing of his body and his blood, one in the communion of his Spirit. Help us to grow in love for one another and come to the full maturity of the body of Christ. Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name. THE DISMISSAL HYMN 2 Go forth and tell! God s love embraces all, he will in grace respond to all who call: how shall they call if they have never heard the gracious invitation of his word? 3 Go forth and tell! The doors are open wide: share God s good gifts let no one be denied; live out your life as Christ your Lord shall choose, your ransomed powers for his sole glory use. 4 Go forth and tell! O Church of God, arise! Go in the strength which Christ your Lord supplies; go till all nations his great name adore and serve him, Lord and King for evermore. James Seddon ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern
