Remain standing for THE GREETING AND WELCOME The president welcomes the people and says: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. THE LIGHTING OF THE FIRST CANDLE ON THE ADVENT WREATH The first burning candle represents the promise that God would raise up a king of David s line who would rule over an everlasting kingdom. After the candle is lit the following prayer is said. Lord Jesus, light of the world, born in David s city of Bethlehem, born like him to be a king: be born in our hearts at Christmas, be King of our lives today. Amen. THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Sit or kneel The Lord comes, bringing to light things now hidden in darkness, and disclosing the purposes of the heart. Let us open our hearts and prepare for his coming, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE COLLECT Let us pray. Eternal God, you have taught us that the night is far spent and the day is at hand: keep us awake and alert, watching for your kingdom, and make us strong in faith, so that when Christ comes in glory to judge the earth, we may go our joyfully to greet him; and, with all your saints may worship you for ever; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Please sit FIRST READING: Isaiah Read by Peter Burman 1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM: Please join in saying the verses printed in bold 1 In you, O Lord my God, have I put my hope: in you have I trusted, let me not be ashamed, nor let my enemies triumph over me. 2 Let none who wait for you be put to shame: but let those that break faith be confounded and gain nothing. 3 Show me your ways, O Lord: and teach me your paths. 4 Lead me in the ways of your truth, and teach me: for you are the God of my salvation. 5 In you have I hoped all the day long: because of your goodness, O Lord. 6 Call to mind your compassion and your loving-kindness: for they are from of old. 7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: but according to your mercy think on me. 8 Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he direct sinners in the way. 9 The meek he will guide in the path of justice: and teach the humble his ways. 10 All the paths of the Lord are faithful and true: for those who keep his covenant and his commandments. 3
SECOND READING: 1 Thessalonians How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? 10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. 11 Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. 12 And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. 13 And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. BIBLE TALK THE GRADUAL HYMN Canon Heather Patacca Please stand 2 O come, O come, thou Lord of might who to thy tribes on Sinai s height in ancient times didst give the law in cloud and majesty and awe. Rejoice! Rejoice! 3 O come, thou key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home; make safe the way that leads on high and close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! 4 O come, thou rod of Jesse, free thine own from Satan s tyranny; from depths of hell thy people save and give them victory o er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! 5 O come, thou dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here; disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death s dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! trans. John Mason Neale ( ) alt. Australian Hymn Book 193 4
THE GOSPEL Alleluia! Alleluia! Be watchful, pray without ceasing, that you may worthy to stand before the Son of Man. Alleluia! Remain standing The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 25 There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26 People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. 29 Then he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees; 30 as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 34 Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, 35 like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. 37 Every day he was teaching in the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives, as it was called. 38 And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the temple. For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. THE SERMON The Revd Canon Matt Williams NICENE CREED 5 Please stand We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the
Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Led by the Rod Kennedy At the end of each prayer Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. At the end Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please sit or kneel THE NOTICES THE GREETING OF PEACE We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace Please stand THE OFFERTORY During the hymn, an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry. On average our congregants contribute $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. Tap and go facility is available on the collection plates. 6
2 He comes with succour speedy to those who suffer wrong; to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, where souls, condemned and dying, were precious in his sight. 4 O er every foe victorious, he on his throne shall rest; from age to age more glorious, all-blessing and all-blest: the tide of time shall never his covenant remove; his name shall stand for ever, his changeless name of love. 3 He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth: before him on the mountains shall peace, the herald, go; and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow. James Montgomery ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 142 (omitting 4-5) THE HOLY COMMUNION The President prays the prayer over the gifts and all respond Blessed be God for ever. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. The president offers thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. In response, we sing together 7 Matthias (b.1954), Christ Church Mass
The president recounts the last supper In faith we acclaim you, O Christ: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. The president concludes the Eucharistic Prayer, to which all respond....in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language, Notre Père..., Padre nuestro..., Vater unser..., 我們在天上的父 Bapa kami..., E to matou Matua..., 天の父よ..., Our Father who art, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body For we all share in the one bread. THE INVITATION TO COMMUNION All baptised Christians are invited to receive the bread and the wine of the Eucharist. Please tell the priest if you prefer to receive a blessing. Gluten free wafers are available on request. THE SENDING OUT OF GOD S PEOPLE Please stand The president prays the post-communion prayer. Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name. 8
THE DISMISSAL HYMN 2 Every eye shall now behold him robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at naught and sold him, pierced and nailed him to the Tree, deeply wailing, [three times] shall the true Messiah see. 4 Yea, Amen! let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia, [three times] Alleluia. Come, Lord, come! 3 Those dear tokens of his passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshippers: with what rapture [three times] gaze we on those glorious scars! Charles Wesley ( ) and John Cennick ( ) THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL The president pronounces the Blessing be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen ORGAN POSTLUDE Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Op.65 No.33 Sigfrid Karg- Elert ( ): Roslyn Carolane, Assistant Organist 9
PLEASE PRAY WITH US FOR THE WORLD Improved relationship between Russia and Ukraine; those who have lost homes and livelihoods through bush fires this week; provision of daily needs for the people of Yemen dealing with civil war and starvation from famine; improvement in the relationship between the Israeli Government and Palestinians living on the Gaza Strip; safety and provision of daily needs for refugees around the world, the removal of children and adult refugees from Nauru. THOSE SUFFERING FROM DROUGHT Our heavenly Father, we acknowledge our ingratitude when we have taken your goodness for granted, when the heaven has poured forth rain and the earth has produced its fruit. Yet now we cry to you for help, as the drought in Australia deepens. Have mercy on our land; have mercy on the people of the land. May your bountiful hand send forth rain upon our parched earth. Fulfil your promises that while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease, so that those in remote and rural areas may find relief from their distress and glorify your name for the provision of their needs. We ask this in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION Reformed Episcopal Church of Spain (Bp Carlos López- Lozano).
