St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, home to worshippers from more than two dozen nations, seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia, and home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. 2 COLLECT O God, your Son has taught us that those who give a cup of water in his name will not lose their reward: open our eyes to see those who are in need, and teach us to set no store by riches and earthly rewards, so that, in surrendering ourselves to serve you in your children, we may labour for the treasure that endures; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. READINGS IN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES This morning s readings can be found in major world languages on our website: FIRST READING Esther 7.1-6, 9-10; So the king and Haman went in to feast with Queen Esther. 2 On the second day, as they were drinking wine, the king again said to Esther, What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled. 3 Then Queen Esther answered, If I have won your favour, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me that is my petition and the lives of my people that is my request. 4 For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have held my peace; but no enemy can compensate for this damage to the king. 5 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther, Who is he, and where is he, who has presumed to do this? 6 Esther said, A foe and enemy, this wicked Haman! Then Haman was terrified before the king and the queen. 9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs in attendance on the king, said, Look, the very gallows that Haman has prepared for Mordecai, whose word saved the king, stands at Haman s house, fifty cubits high. And the king said, Hang him on that. 10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the anger of the king abated. 20 Mordecai recorded these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 enjoining them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same month, year by year, 22 as the days on which the Jews gained relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and presents to the poor. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. 2

PSALM 124 At 8.00am and 9am the reader and congregation say alternate verses 1 If the Lord had not been on our side, now may Israel say: if the Lord had not been on our side, when our enemies rose against us, 2 Then they would have swallowed us alive: when their anger was kindled against us. 3 Then the waters would have overwhelmed us, and the torrent gone over us: the raging waters would have gone clean over us. 4 But praised be the Lord: who has not given us as a prey to their teeth. 5 We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler: the snare is broken, and we have gone free. 6 Our help is in the name of the Lord: who has made heaven and earth. SECOND READING James Above all, my beloved, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your Yes be yes and your No be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. 13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest. 19 My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, 20 you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING St Mark Alleluia! Alleluia! Plead my cause and set me free: O give me life, according to your word. Alleluia! 3

The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 39 But Jesus said, Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterwards to speak evil of me. 40 Whoever is not against us is for us. 41 For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. 42 If any of you put a stumbling-block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. 45 And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell., 47 And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched. 49 For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Officiant: The Revd Canon Christopher Carolane, Canon Pastor Preacher: The Revd Canon Dr Stephen Ames, Associate Priest Readers: Michael Fulcher and Canon Campbell Bairstow Choir: The Choir of Christ Church South Yarra, directed by Mr Michael Fulcher Introit Hymn: Be thou my vision (hymn 4, pg. 13) Collection Hymn: How shall I sing that majesty (hymn 5, pg. 14) Dismissal Hymn: Go forth and tell (hymn 3, pg. 12) Responses: Kenneth Leighton ( ) Psalm Chant: T. 5 PSALM Sung by the Choir 7 The law of the Lord is an undefiled law, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple. 8 The statutes of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, and endureth for ever: the judgements of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey, and the honey-comb. 11 Moreover, by them is thy servant taught: and in keeping of them there is great reward. 12 Who can tell how oft he offendeth: O cleanse thou me from my secret faults. 13 Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me: so shall I be undefiled, and innocent from the great offence. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart: be alway acceptable in thy sight, FIRST READING Esther So the Jews adopted as a custom what they had begun to do, as Mordecai had written to them. 24 Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur that is, the lot to crush and destroy them; 25 but when Esther came before the king, he gave orders in writing that the wicked plot that he had devised against the Jews should come upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. 26 Therefore these days are called Purim, from the word Pur. Thus because of all that was written in this letter, and of what they had faced in this matter, and of what had happened to them, 27 the Jews established and accepted as a custom for themselves and their descendants and all who joined them, that without fail they would continue to observe these two days every year, as it was written and at the time appointed. 28 These days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, in every family, province, and city; and these days of Purim should never fall into disuse among the Jews, nor should the commemoration of these days cease among their descendants. 29 Queen Esther daughter of Abihail, along with the Jew Mordecai, gave full written authority, confirming this second letter about Purim. 30 Letters were sent wishing peace and security to all the Jews, to the one hundred and twenty-seven provinces 5

of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, 31 and giving orders that these days of Purim should be observed at their appointed seasons, as the Jew Mordecai and Queen Esther enjoined on the Jews, just as they had laid down for themselves and for their descendants regulations concerning their fasts and their lamentations. 32 The command of Queen Esther fixed these practices of Purim, and it was recorded in writing. SECOND READING James a 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. 16 For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. 1 Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? 2 You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. 4 Adulterers! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose that it is for nothing that the scripture says, God yearns jealously for the spirit that he has made to dwell in us? 6 But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says, God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. COLLECT FOR THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Lord, we beseech thee, grant thy people grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil, and with pure hearts and minds to follow thee the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6

PRAY WITH US FOR THE WORLD Progress in discussions for a peaceful settlement in Syria between Russia, Turkey and Iran; protection of humanitarian and aid workers around the world who risk their safety to help those most vulnerable; care and protection for all creation. THOSE SUFFERING FROM DROUGHT Our heavenly Father, we acknowledge our ingratitude when we have taken your goodness for granted, when the heaven has poured forth rain and the earth has produced its fruit. Yet now we cry to you for help, as the drought in New South Wales and Queensland deepens. Have mercy on our land; have mercy on the people of the land. May your bountiful hand send forth rain upon our parched earth. Fulfil your promises that while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease, so that those in remote and rural areas may find relief from their distress and glorify your name for the provision of their needs. We ask this in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION Church of the Province of Uganda (Abp Stanley Ntagali). 10 HYMN 1: BE STILL, FOR THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around; he burns with holy fire, with splendor he is crowned: how awesome is the sight our radiant King of light! Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place: he comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace. No work too hard for him, in faith receive from him. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place. David J. Evans (b.1957) Common Praise 383 Reproduced with permission 10

HYMN 2: I COME WITH JOY TO MEET 2 I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ s communion bread. 3 As Christ breaks bread and bids us share each proud division ends. The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends. 4 And thus with joy we meet our Lord, his presence, always near, is in such friendship better known: we see, and praise him here. 5 Together met, together bound, we ll go our different ways, and as his people in the world we ll live and speak his praise. Brian A. Wren (b. 1936) Together in Song 533 Reproduced with permission 11

HYMN 3: GO FORTH AND TELL 2 Go forth and tell! God s love embraces all, he will in grace respond to all who call: how shall they call if they have never heard the gracious invitation of his word? 3 Go forth and tell! The doors are open wide: share God s good gifts let no one be denied; live out your life as Christ your Lord shall choose, your ransomed powers for his sole glory use. 4 Go forth and tell! O Church of God, arise! Go in the strength which Christ your Lord supplies; go till all nations his great name adore and serve him, Lord and King for evermore. James Seddon ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern Reproduced with permission 12

HYMN 4: BE THOU MY VISION Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord, be thou my great Father, thy child let me be, be thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight, be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might, be thou my soul s shelter, be thou my strong tower, O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise, be thou my inheritance now and always, be thou and thou only the first in my heart, O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, thou heaven s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after vict ry is won, great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all. Irish, 8th century, tr. Mary Byrne ( ) Versified by Eleanor Hull ( ) New English Hymnal

HYMN 5: HOW SHALL I SING THAT MAJESTY 2 Thy brightness unto them appears, whilst I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face. They sing because thou art their sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun there alleluias be. 4 How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep. Thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere. 3 Enlighten with faith s light my heart, inflame it with love s fire; then shall I sing and bear a part with that celestial choir. I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite. John Mason ( ) Common Praise
