Amen. READINGS IN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES This morning s readings can be found in major world languages on our website: FIRST READING Deuteronomy Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; let the earth hear the words of my mouth. 2 May my teaching drop like the rain, my speech condense like the dew; like gentle rain on grass, like showers on new growth. 3 For I will proclaim the name of the LORD; ascribe greatness to our God! 4 The Rock, his work is perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God, without deceit, just and upright is he. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. 2
PSALM At 8.00am and 9.00am, the reader and congregation say alternate verses. At 10.30am, please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated 1 The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament proclaims his handiwork; 2 One day tells it to another: and night to night communicates knowledge. Response 3 There is no speech or language: nor are their voices heard; 4 Yet their sound has gone out through all the world: and their words to the ends of the earth. Response 5 There he has pitched a tent for the sun: which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run his course. 6 Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound: and nothing is hidden from its heat. Response SECOND READING Jude 1-3, Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, To those who are called, who are beloved in God the Father and kept safe for Jesus Christ: 2 May mercy, peace, and love be yours in abundance. 3 Beloved, while eagerly preparing to write to you about the salvation we share, I find it necessary to write and appeal to you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. 17 But you, beloved, must remember the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18 for they said to you, In the last time there will be scoffers, indulging their own ungodly lusts. 19 It is these worldly people, devoid of the Spirit, who are causing divisions. 20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; 21 keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on some who are wavering; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; and have mercy on still others with fear, hating even the tunic defiled by their bodies. 24 Now to him who is able to keep you from falling, and to make you stand without blemish in the presence of his glory with rejoicing, 25 to the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. 3
GOSPEL READING St Luke At 10.30am, the cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat. Alleluia! Alleluia! Serve the Lord with awe, and govern yourselves in fear and trembling: blessed are those that turn to him for refuge. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 12 Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, 16 and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Officiant: The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, Dean Preacher: Where is the Proof? 5 PSALM 116 Sung by the Choir I am well pleased: that the Lord hath heard the voice of my prayer; That he hath inclined his ear unto me: therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. The snares of death compassed me round about: and the pains of hell gat hold upon me. I shall find trouble and heaviness, and I will call upon the Name of the Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. Gracious is the Lord, and righteous: yea, our God is merciful. The Lord preserveth the simple: I was in misery, and he helped me. Turn again then unto thy rest, O my soul: for the Lord hath rewarded thee. And why? thou hast delivered my soul from death: mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the Lord: in the land of the living. I believed, and therefore will I speak; but I was sore troubled I said in my haste, All men are liars. What reward shall I give unto the Lord: for all the benefits that he hath done unto me? I will receive the cup of salvation: and call upon the Name of the Lord. I will pay my vows now in the presence of all his people: right dear in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Behold, O Lord, how that I am thy servant: I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid; thou hast broken my bonds in sunder. I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving: and will call upon the Name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord, in the sight of all his people: in the courts of the Lord s house, even in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord. 5
FIRST READING 1 Maccabees They forcibly circumcised all the uncircumcised boys that they found within the borders of Israel. 47 They hunted down the arrogant, and the work prospered in their hands. 48 They rescued the law out of the hands of the Gentiles and kings, and they never let the sinner gain the upper hand. 49 Now the days drew near for Mattathias to die, and he said to his sons: Arrogance and scorn have now become strong; it is a time of ruin and furious anger. 50 Now, my children, show zeal for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of our ancestors. 51 Remember the deeds of the ancestors, which they did in their generations; and you will receive great honour and an everlasting name. 52 Was not Abraham found faithful when tested, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness? 53 Joseph in the time of his distress kept the commandment, and became lord of Egypt. 54 Phinehas our ancestor, because he was deeply zealous, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood. 55 Joshua, because he fulfilled the command, became a judge in Israel. 56 Caleb, because he testified in the assembly, received an inheritance in the land. 57 David, because he was merciful, inherited the throne of the kingdom for ever. 58 Elijah, because of great zeal for the law, was taken up into heaven. 59 Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael believed and were saved from the flame. 60 Daniel, because of his innocence, was delivered from the mouth of the lions. 61 And so observe, from generation to generation, that none of those who put their trust in him will lack strength. 62 Do not fear the words of sinners, for their splendour will turn into dung and worms. 63 Today they will be exalted, but tomorrow they will not be found, because they will have returned to the dust, and their plans will have perished. 64 My children, be courageous and grow strong in the law, for by it you will gain honour. 65 Here is your brother Simeon who, I know, is wise in counsel; always listen to him; he shall be your father. 66 Judas Maccabeus has been a mighty warrior from his youth; he shall command the army for you and fight the battle against the peoples. SECOND READING John If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those 6
who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them. 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world? 23 Jesus answered him, Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. 25 I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. COLLECT FOR SIMON AND JUDE, APOSTLES AND MARTYRS O Almighty God, who hast built thy Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the head cornerstone: grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable unto thee; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen PRAY WITH US FOR THE WORLD The continued evacuation of refugee children and adults from Nauru; constructive negotiations around security between Europe and Russia; relief from drought in Yemen and Afghanistan, and provision of food and drinking water to those in severely affected areas. THOSE SUFFERING FROM DROUGHT Our heavenly Father, we acknowledge our ingratitude when we have taken your goodness for granted, when the heaven has poured forth rain and the earth has produced its fruit. Yet now we cry to you for help, as the drought in New South Wales and Queensland deepens. Have mercy on our land; have mercy on the people of the land. May your bountiful hand send forth rain upon our parched earth. Fulfil your promises that while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease, so that those in remote and rural areas may find relief from their distress and glorify your name for the provision of their needs. We ask this in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION Church in the Province of the West Indies. 10 HYMN 1: LORD OF ALL THE SAINTS 2 I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ s communion bread. 3 As Christ breaks bread and bids us share each proud division ends. The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends. 4 And thus with joy we meet our Lord, his presence, always near, is in such friendship better known: we see, and praise him here. 5 Together met, together bound, we ll go our different ways, and as his people in the world we ll live and speak his praise. Brian A. Wren (b. 1936) Together in Song 533. Reproduced with permission HYMN 2: THE ETERNAL GIFTS 2 For they the church s princes are, triumphant leaders in the war, in heavenly courts a warrior band, true lights to lighten every land. 3 Theirs is the steadfast faith of saints, and hope that never yields nor faints, and love of Christ in perfect glow that lays the prince of this world low. 10
4 In them the Father s glory shone, in them the will of God the Son, in them exalts the Holy Ghost, through them rejoice the heavenly host. 5 To thee, Redeemer, now we cry, that thou wouldst join to them on high thy servants, who this grace implore, for ever and for evermore. St Ambrose (c ), tr. John Mason Neale ( ). Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 297ii HYMN 3: O THOU, WHO AT THY EUCHARIST For all thy church, O Lord, we intercede; make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, by drawing all to thee, O Prince of peace; thus may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold; O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep, back to the faith which saints believed of old, back to the Church which still that faith doth keep: soon may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, may we be one with all thy church above, one with thy saints in one unbroken peace, one with thy saints in one unbounded love: more blessèd still, in peace and love to be one with the Trinity in Unity. William Henry Turton ( ). Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard
HYMN 4: REJOICE IN GOD S SAINTS HYMN 5: ONE GOD Some march with events to turn them God s way; some need to withdraw, the better to pray; some carry the gospel through fire and through flood: our world is their parish; their purpose is God. Rejoice in those saints, unpraised and unknown, who bear someone s cross, or shoulder their own; they shame our complaining, our comforts, our cares: what patience in caring, what courage, is theirs! Rejoice in God s saints, today and all days: a world without saints forgets how to praise. In loving, in living, they prove it is true: their way of self-giving, Lord, leads us to you. Fred Pratt Green ( ); Together in Song 470. Reproduced with permission Sharny Russell Schlencker (b.1955). Together in Song 742 Reproduced with permission 12
HYMN 6: BEHOLD THE LAMB WHO BEARS Keith Getty (b.1974), Kristyn Getty (b.1980), and Stuart Townend (b.1963) Hymns Ancient & Modern Reproduced with permission HYMN 7: LOVE DIVINE 13
Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave: thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish then thy new creation, pure and spotless let us be, let us see thy great salvation, perfectly restored in thee: changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love and praise. Charles Wesley ( ) Australian Hymn Book 148 HYMN 8: THE ETERNAL GIFTS 2 For they the church s princes are, triumphant leaders in the war, in heavenly courts a warrior band, true lights to lighten every land. 3 Theirs is the steadfast faith of saints, and hope that never yields nor faints, and love of Christ in perfect glow that lays the prince of this world low. 15 HYMN 9: THANKS TO GOD WHOSE WORD Thanks to God whose Word incarnate human flesh has glorified, who by life and death and rising grace abundant has supplied. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise him for his open Word. Thanks to God whose Word was written in the Bible s sacred page, record of the revelation showing God to every age. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise him for his open Word. Thanks to God whose Word is published in the tongues of every race. See its glory undiminished by the change of time and place. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise him for his open Word. Thanks to God whose Word is answered by the Spirit s voice within. Here we drink of joy unmeasured, life redeemed from death and sin. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise him for his open Word. Reginald Thomas Brooks ( ) Together in Song 431 Reproduced with permission 15
