St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, home to worshippers from more than two dozen nations, seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia, and home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. We are delighted that you are with us today: come and worship with us again. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please make yourself known to our clergy. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. 8AM BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER HOLY COMMUNION President and Preacher: The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, Dean Reader: Jamie Pearce Please join in singing the Hymn during Communion When I needed a neighbour (see separate sheet) 9AM FAMILY-STYLE EUCHARIST President: The Revd Canon Dr Jill Firth, Associate Priest Preacher: The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, Dean Deacon: Rod Kennedy Bible Talk: Mia Lucas Reader: Dr Tony McCutcheon Intercessions: Mia Lucas Gradual Hymn: Father of heaven (hymn 3, pg. 11) Offertory Hymn: Jesus, we thus obey (hymn 6, pg. 14) Dismissal Hymn: How sweet the name of Jesus sounds (hymn 5, pg. 13) Organ Postlude: Jerusalem, du hochgebaute Stadt, Op. 65, No. 48 Sigfrid Karg-Elest ( ): Roslyn Carolane, Assistant Organist 1

Thanks be to God for its bounty and beauty, life that sustains us in body and mind: plenty for all, if we learn how to share it, riches undreamt of to fathom and find. Organ Postlude: Fanfare - William Mathias ( ): Mr Mark Slavec, June Nixon Organ Scholar COLLECT Long have our human wars ruined its harvest; long has earth bowed to the terror of force; long have we wasted what others have need of, poisoned the fountain of life at its source. Thanks be to God Earth is the Lord s: it is ours to enjoy it, ours, as God s stewards, to farm and defend. From its pollution, misuse, and destruction, good Lord deliver us, world without end. Thanks be to God Merciful God, in your Son you call not the righteous but sinners to repentance: draw us away from the easy road that leads to destruction, and guide us into paths that lead to life abundant, that in seeking your truth, and obeying your will, we may know the joy of being a disciple of Jesus our Saviour; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. READINGS IN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES This morning s readings can be found in major world languages on our website: FIRST READING at 10.30am only Job , Then Job answered: 2 Today also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning. 3 O that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling! 4 I would lay my case before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. 5 I 2

would learn what he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. 6 Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; but he would give heed to me. 7 There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted for ever by my judge. 8 If I go forward, he is not there; or backward, I cannot perceive him; 9 on the left he hides, and I cannot behold him; I turn to the right, but I cannot see him. 16 God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me; 17 If only I could vanish in darkness, and thick darkness would cover my face! Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM At 8.00am and 9am the reader and congregation say alternate verses. At 10.30am the choir sings the psalm. 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me: why are you so far from helping me and from the words of my groaning? 2 My God, I cry to you by day, but you do not answer: and by night also I take no rest. 3 But you continue holy: you that are the praise of Israel. 4 In you our forebears trusted: they trusted, and you delivered them; 5 To you they cried and they were saved: they put their trust in you and were not confounded. 6 But as for me, I am a worm and no man: the scorn of all and despised by the people. 7 Those that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out their lips at me and wag their heads, saying, 8 He trusted in the Lord let him deliver him: let him deliver him, if he delights in him. 9 But you are he that took me out of the womb: that brought me to lie at peace on my mother s breast. 10 On you have I been cast since my birth: you are my God, even from my mother s womb. 11 O go not from me, for trouble is hard at hand: and there is none to help. 12 Many oxen surround me: fat bulls of Bashan close me in on every side. 13 They gape wide their mouths at me: like lions that roar and rend. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart within my breast is like melting wax. 15 My mouth is dried up like a potsherd: and my tongue clings to my gums. 3

SECOND READING Hebrews Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. 14 Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING St Mark At 10.30am, the cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat. Alleluia! Alleluia! Speak, Lord, your servants are listening: you have the words of eternal life. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 17 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 18 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother. 20 He said to him, Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth. 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. 22 When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 23 Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. 26 They were greatly astounded 4

and said to one another, Then who can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible. 28 Peter began to say to him, Look, we have left everything and followed you. 29 Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Officiant: The Canon Pastor Preacher: Mr Philip Nicholls, Director of Music Readers: Tim James and Canon Colin Reilly Introit Hymn: God is our strength and refuge (hymn 7, pg. 14) Collection Hymn: Be thou my vision (hymn 3 pg. 11) Dismissal Hymn: How sweet the name of Jesus sounds (hymn 2, pg. 11) Responses: Thomas Tomkins ( ) Psalm Chant: June Nixon Setting: Short Evening Service Orlando Gibbons ( ) Anthem: And I saw a new heaven Edgar Bainton ( ) And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. Postlude: Chorale Prelude on Nun danket alle Gott June Nixon: Mr Lachlan Redd, Sub-Organist PSALM Sung by the Choir 13 Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last: and be gracious unto thy servants. 14 O satisfy us with thy mercy, and that soon: so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life. 15 Comfort us again now after the time that thou hast plagued us: and for the years wherein we have suffered adversity. 5

16 Shew thy servants thy work: and their children thy glory. 17 And the glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us : prosper thou the work of our hands upon us, O prosper thou our handywork. FIRST READING Job But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? 13 Mortals do not know the way to it, and it is not found in the land of the living. 14 The deep says, It is not in me, and the sea says, It is not with me. 15 It cannot be bought for gold, and silver cannot be weighed out as its price. 16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire. 17 Gold and glass cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold. 18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; the price of wisdom is above pearls. 19 The chrysolite of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, nor can it be valued in pure gold. 20 Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding? 21 It is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the birds of the air. 22 Abaddon and Death say, We have heard a rumour of it with our ears. 23 God understands the way to it, and he knows its place. 24 For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens. 25 When he gave to the wind its weight, and apportioned out the waters by measure; 26 when he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the thunderbolt; 27 then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out. 28 And he said to humankind, Truly, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding. SECOND READING Hebrews Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest is still open, let us take care that none of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2 For indeed the good news came to us just as to them; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, As in my anger I swore, They shall not enter my rest, though his works were finished at the foundation of the world. 4 For in one place it speaks about the seventh day as follows: And God rested on the seventh day from all his works. 5 And again in this place it says, They shall not enter my rest. 6 Since therefore it remains open for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, 7 again he sets a certain day today saying through David much later, in the words already quoted, Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak later about another day. 9 So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; 10 for those who enter God s rest also cease from their labours as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall through such disobedience as theirs. 6

COLLECT FOR THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY O almighty and most merciful God, of thy bountiful goodness keep us, we beseech thee, from all things that may hurt us; that we, being ready both in body and soul, may cheerfully accomplish those things that thou wouldest have done; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAY WITH US FOR THE WORLD Those places adversely affected by severe weather events Florida, and Sulawesi and ease of access to those affected and in need of clean water and food; wisdom for world leaders in the face of recent climate change ultimatums; peace in the Middle East; refugees around the world, and release for the children held in detention on Nauru. THOSE SUFFERING FROM DROUGHT Our heavenly Father, we acknowledge our ingratitude when we have taken your goodness for granted, when the heaven has poured forth rain and the earth has produced its fruit. Yet now we cry to you for help, as the drought in New South Wales and Queensland deepens. Have mercy on our land; have mercy on the people of the land. May your bountiful hand send forth rain upon our parched earth. Fulfil your promises that while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease, so that those in remote and rural areas may find relief from their distress and glorify your name for the provision of their needs. We ask this in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. 10 HYMN 1: COMMUNITY OF CHRIST 2 Community of Christ, look past the Church s door and see the refugee, the hungry, and the poor. Take hands with the oppressed, the jobless in your street, take towel and water, that you wash your neighbour s feet. 3 Community of Christ, through whom the word must sound cry out for justice and for peace the whole world round: disarm the powers that war and all that can destroy, turn bombs to bread, and tears of anguish into joy. 4 When menace melts away, so shall God s will be done, the climate of the world be peace and Christ its Sun; our currency be love and kindliness our law, our food and faith be shared as one for evermore. Shirley Erena Murray (b.1931) Together in Song

HYMN 2: HOW SWEET THE NAME OF JESUS 2 It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary, rest. 3 Dear name, the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding-place, my never-failing treasury filled with boundless stores of grace. HYMN 3: BE THOU MY VISION 6 Till then I would thy love proclaim with every fleeting breath; and may the music of thy Name refresh my soul in death. 4 Jesus! my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, my Prophet, Priest and King, my Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, accept the praise I bring. 5 Weak is the effort of my heart, and cold my warmest thought; but when I see thee as thou art, I ll praise thee as I ought. John Newton ( ) New English Hymnal 374 Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord, be thou my great Father, thy child let me be, be thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight, be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might, be thou my soul s shelter, be thou my strong tower, O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. 11

HYMN 4: YE SERVANTS OF GOD Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise, be thou my inheritance now and always, be thou and thou only the first in my heart, O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, thou heaven s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after vict ry is won, great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all. Irish, 8th century, tr. Mary Byrne ( ) Versified by Eleanor Hull ( ) New English Hymnal 339 God ruleth on high, almighty to save; and still he is nigh, his presence we have; the great congregation his triumphs shall sing, ascribing salvation to Jesus our King. Salvation to God, who sits on the throne! let all cry aloud, and honour the Son: the praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb. Then let us adore, and give him his right, all glory and power, all wisdom and might, all honour and blessing, with angels above, and thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love. Charles Wesley ( ) Australian Hymn Book

HYMN 5: FATHER OF HEAVEN 2 Almighty Son, incarnate Word, our prophet, priest, redeemer, Lord, before your throne we sinners bend; to us your saving grace extend. 3 Eternal Spirit, by whose breath the soul is saved from sin and death, before your throne we sinners bend; to us your quickening power extend. 4 Thrice holy Father, Spirit, Son, mysterious Godhead, Three in One, before your throne we sinners bend; grace, pardon, life to us extend. Edward Cooper ( ) alt. Together in Song

HYMN 6: JESUS WE THUS OBEY 2 Our hearts we open wide, to make the Saviour room; for now the Lamb, the crucified, the sinner s friend has come. 3 Your presence makes the feast; now let our spirits feel the glory not to be expressed, the joy unspeakable. 4 With high and heavenly bliss you now our spirits cheer; your house of banqueting is this, and you have brought us here. 5 Now let our souls be fed with manna from above, and over us your banner spread of everlasting love. Charles Wesley ( ) alt. HYMN 7: GOD IS OUR STRENGTH AND REFUGE 2 There is a flowing river within God s holy city; God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved. God s help is swiftly given, thrones vanish at his presence; God the Lord of Hosts is with us evermore Come, see the works of our maker, learn of his deeds all-powerful: wars will cease across the world when he shatters the spear. Be still and know your creator, uplift him in the nations; God the Lord of Hosts is with us evermore. Richard Thomas Bewes (b.1934) Together in Song 28
