Please join in singing the hymns and in saying the words printed in bold type. GATHERING IN GOD S NAME Please stand for the hymn 2 Thou, grieving at the bitter cry Of all creation doomed to die, Didst come to save a ruined race With healing gifts of heavenly grace. 3 Thou camest, Bridegroom of the bride, As drew the world to evening-tide, Proceeding from a virgin shrine, The Son of Man, yet Lord divine. 4 At thy great name, exalted now, All knees must bend, all hearts must bow, And things in heaven and earth shall own That thou art Lord and King alone. 5 To thee, O holy One, we pray, Our judge in that tremendous day, Preserve us, while we dwell below, From every onslaught of the foe. THE WELCOME 6 All praise, eternal Son, to thee, Whose advent sets thy people free, Whom with the Father we adore, And Spirit blest, for evermore. The Officiant welcomes the people and then sings trans. John Mason Neale ( ) New English Hymnal 1 THE RESPONSES O Lord, open thou our lips; and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us. William Byrd (c ) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. 2
PSALM Choir Please Sit 26 With the clean thou shalt be clean: and with the froward thou shalt learn frowardness. 27 For thou shalt save the people that are in adversity: and shalt bring down the high looks of the proud. 28 Thou also shalt light my candle: the Lord my God shall make my darkness to be light. 29 For in thee I shall discomfit an host of men: and with the help of my God I shall leap over the wall. 30 The way of God is an undefiled way: the word of the Lord also is tried in the fire; he is the defender of all them that put their trust in him. 31 For who is God, but the Lord: or who hath any strength, except our God? 32 It is God, that girdeth me with strength of war: and maketh my way perfect. 33 He maketh my feet like harts feet: and setteth me up on high. 34 He teacheth mine hands to fight: and mine arms shall break even a bow of steel. 35 Thou hast given me the defence of thy salvation: thy right hand also shall hold me up, and thy loving correction shall make me great. 36 Thou shalt make room enough under me for to go: that my footsteps shall not slide. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Chant: William Henry Havergal ( ) & June Nixon FIRST READING: Isaiah Read by a Susan Hawley 18 For I know their works and their thoughts, and I am coming to gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come and shall see my glory, 19 and I will set a sign among them. From them I will send survivors to the nations, to Tarshish, Put, and Lud which draw the bow to Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands far away that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the nations. 20 They shall bring all your kindred from all the nations as an offering to the LORD, on horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and on mules, and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the LORD, just as the Israelites bring a grain-offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD. 21 And I will also take some of them as priests and as Levites, says the LORD. 22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your descendants and your name remain. 23 From new moon to new moon, and from sabbath to sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, says the LORD. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3
THE MAGNIFICAT The Song of Mary, St Luke Please Stand My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. SECOND READING: Revelation Music: Evening Service in C Bryan Kelly (b.1934) Read by Canon A/Prof Kate Drummond 11 Then I saw a great white throne and the one who sat on it; the earth and the heaven fled from his presence, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Also another book was opened, the book of life. And the dead were judged according to their works, as recorded in the books. 13 And the sea gave up the dead that were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and all were judged according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire; 15 and anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. 5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4
NUNC DIMITTIS Please Stand The Song of Simeon, St Luke Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation; Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. THE APOSTLES CREED Music: Evening Service in C Kelly Please Stand I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. The Officiant and Choir sing THE LESSER LITANY The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Byrd Please sit/kneel Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen. THE VERSICLE AND RESPONSES Byrd O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. 5
Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. THE COLLECTS O LORD, raise up (we pray thee) thy power, and come among us, and with great might succour us; that whereas, through our sins and wickedness, we are sore let and hindered in running the race that is set before us, thy bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us; through the satisfaction of thy Son our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost be honour and glory, world without end. Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE ANTHEM Justorum animae William Byrd (c ) Sung by the Choir Translation The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there no torment of malice shall touch them. In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: but they are in peace. THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Concluding with THE GRACE The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, evermore. Amen. THE NOTICES 6
THE HYMN BEFORE THE SERMON Please Stand During the hymn, an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry. On average our congregants contribute $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. Tap and go facilities is available on the plate. 2 God in time, God in man, this is God s timeless plan: he will come, as a man, born himself of woman, God divinely human. Ring, bells, ring, ring, ring! Sing, choirs, sing, sing, sing! When he comes, when he comes, who will make him welcome? 4 Journey ends: where afar Bethlem shines, like a star, stable door stands ajar. Unborn Son of Mary, Saviour, do not tarry. Ring, bells, ring, ring, ring! Sing, choirs, sing, sing, sing! Jesus comes, Jesus comes: we will make him welcome. 3 Mary, hail! Though afraid, she believed, she obeyed. In her womb God is laid: till the time expected, nurtured and protected. Ring, bells, ring, ring, ring! Sing, choirs, sing, sing, sing! When he comes, when he comes, who will make him welcome? Frederick Pratt Green ( ) Together in Song 283 Reproduced with permission THE SERMON The Revd Prof. Mark Lindsay, Associate Priest 7
THE DISMISSAL HYMN Please Stand Choir only Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; he is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; he has loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword: his truth is marching on. All Choir only He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; he is sifting out the hearts of all before his judgement seat: O be swift, my soul, to answer him; be jubilant my feet! Our God is marching on. All Glory, glory, hallelujah, glory, glory, hallelujah, glory, glory, hallelujah, our God is marching on. Choir only In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, with a glory in his bosom which transfigures you and me: as he died to make us holy, let us live to make all free, while God is marching on. All Glory, glory, hallelujah, glory, glory, hallelujah, glory, glory, hallelujah, while God is marching on. 8

PLEASE PRAY WITH US FOR THE WORLD Peace in Syria; success of the UN sponsored peace talk for Yemen in Sweden, and for provision of daily needs for the people of Yemen dealing with civil war and starvation from famine; just and fair resolution to the industrial problems in France; safety and provision of daily needs for refugees around the world, the removal of children and adult refugees from Nauru. THOSE SUFFERING FROM DROUGHT Our heavenly Father, we acknowledge our ingratitude when we have taken your goodness for granted, when the heaven has poured forth rain and the earth has produced its fruit. Yet now we cry to you for help, as the drought in Australia deepens. Have mercy on our land; have mercy on the people of the land. May your bountiful hand send forth rain upon our parched earth. Fulfil your promises that while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease, so that those in remote and rural areas may find relief from their distress and glorify your name for the provision of their needs. We ask this in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
