Please join in singing the hymns and in saying the words printed in bold type. GATHERING IN GOD S NAME Please stand for the hymn 2 Love climbs the heights of joy and grace and gifts us with each sunlit day; the beauty of each sacred space brings blessings we may trace: God's love embraces all! 3 Love spans the breadth of faith and fear where questions dance with mystery, as wisdom holds us ever near and sings in accents clear: God's love embraces all! 4 Love sounds the depths of grief and pain and gathers all who weep and mourn; this loving presence will remain and life anew sustain: God's love embraces all! 5 Love permeates this holy ground and lights a fire of awe within; love speaks in stillness and in sound and shares this truth profound: God's love embraces all! THE WELCOME The Officiant welcomes the people and then sings Text: Helen Wiltshire (b.1945) Music: EMBRACE Margaret Gunn (b.1949) Outright winner of Level 2 (newly composed text and music) of the 2015 St Paul s Cathedral Melbourne 125th Anniversary Hymn Competition Reproduced with permission THE RESPONSES O Lord, open thou our lips; and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us. 2 John Reading (c ) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. PSALM Choir Please Sit 20 The Lord shall reward me after my righteous dealing: according to the cleanness of my hands shall he recompense me. 21 Because I have kept the ways of the Lord: and have not forsaken my God, as the wicked doth. 22 For I have an eye unto all his laws: and will not cast out his commandments from me. 23 I was also uncorrupt before him: and eschewed mine own wickedness. 24 Therefore shall the Lord reward me after my righteous dealing: and according unto the cleanness of my hands in his eye-sight. 25 With the holy thou shalt be holy: and with a perfect man thou shalt be perfect. 26 With the clean thou shalt be clean: and with the froward thou shalt learn frowardness. 27 For thou shalt save the people that are in adversity: and shalt bring down the high looks of the proud. 28 Thou also shalt light my candle: the Lord my God shall make my darkness to be light. 29 For in thee I shall discomfit an host of men: and with the help of my God I shall leap over the wall. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Chant: William H. Havergal ( ) FIRST READING: Genesis Read by Tim James God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. 2 The fear and dread of you shall rest on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the air, on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are delivered. 3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and just as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. 4 Only, you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. 5 For your own lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning: from every animal I will require it and from human beings, each one for the blood of another, I will require a reckoning for human life. 6 Whoever sheds the blood of a human, by a human shall that person s blood be shed; for in his own image God made humankind. 7 And you, be fruitful and multiply, abound on the earth and multiply in it. 8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I 3
will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. 17 God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth. 18 The sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 These three were the sons of Noah; and from these the whole earth was peopled. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE MAGNIFICAT The Choir sings Please Stand The Song of Mary, St Luke My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. SECOND READING: Galatians Music: Evening Service in A Charles Villiers Stanford ( ) Read by Lay Canon Rob Deutscher 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood self-condemned; 12 for until certain people came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But after they came, he drew back and kept himself separate for fear of the circumcision faction. 13 And the other Jews joined him in this hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not acting consistently with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? 4
15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is justified not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law. 17 But if, in our effort to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have been found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18 But if I build up again the very things that I once tore down, then I demonstrate that I am a transgressor. 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; 20 and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. NUNC DIMITTIS The Choir sings Please Stand The Song of Simeon, St Luke Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation; Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. THE APOSTLES CREED Music: Evening Service in A Charles Villiers Stanford Please Stand I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. 5
The Officiant and Choir sing THE LESSER LITANY The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Reading Please sit/kneel Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen. THE VERSICLE AND RESPONSES Reading O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. THE COLLECTS Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. 6
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE ANTHEM Sung by the Choir I Was Glad C. Hubert H. Parry ( ) THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Concluding with THE GRACE The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, evermore. Amen. THE NOTICES THE HYMN BEFORE THE SERMON Please Stand During the hymn, an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry. On average our congregants contribute $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. Tap and go facilities is available on the plate. 2 Thy heralds brought glad tidings to greatest, as to least; they bade them rise, and hasten to share the great King s feast; and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming one Church, one Faith, one Lord. 3 Through many a day of darkness, through many a scene of strife, the faithful few fought bravely, to guard the nation's life. Their gospel of redemption, sin pardoned, earth restored, was all in this enfolded: one Church, one Faith, one Lord. 7
4 And we, shall we be faithless? shall hearts fail, hands hang down? shall we evade the conflict, and cast away our crown? Not so: in God's deep counsels some better thing is stored; we will maintain, unflinching, one Church, one Faith, one Lord. 5 Thy mercy will not fail us, nor leave thy work undone; with thy right hand to help us, the victory shall be won; and then, by all creation, thy name shall be adored, and this shall be their anthem: one Church, one Faith, one Lord. Edward Plumptre ( ) alt. New English Hymnal 485 THE SERMON The Revd Canon Dr Stephen Ames, Associate Priest THE DISMISSAL HYMN Please Stand 2 People of the ancient Dreamtime, they who found this country first, ask with those, the later comers, will our dream be blessed or cursed? Grant us, Lord, new birth, new living, hope for which our children thirst. 3 Lord, life-giving healing Spirit, on our hurts your mercy shower; lead us by your inward dwelling, guiding, guarding, every hour. Bless and keep our land Australia: in your will her peace and power. Michael Rayner Thwaites ( ) and Honour Mary Thwaites ( ) Together in Song 672ii Used with permission 8
