1 First Presbyterian Church San Leandro HIGHLIGHTS APRIL 2019 VOLUME 20, ISSUE 4 HOLY WEEK Sunday, April 14 th marks the beginning of Holy Week. It is Palm Sunday, when we remember Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The children will participate in worship, singing and waving their palm branches and banners. The One Great Hour of Sharing Offering will be received on this day, giving us opportunity to generously support people in need throughout the world. We will also be having our annual Palm Sunday Breakfast that morning, hosted by Carol Anderson and Sue Robertson and their crew. Come at 8:00 am for a great family breakfast prior to worship. Tickets are available ahead of time, and proceeds go to the Campership Fund. Later during Holy Week, we will have our traditional Maundy Thursday/Tenebrae Worship Service at 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 18 th. We will have Holy Communion as we remember Jesus last supper with his disciples. Then we will observe Tenebrae, the Service of Darkness that dates back to the early years of the Christian church and is considered to be the most solemn celebration of the church. Tenebrae (the Latin word for shadows ) depicts the approaching crucifixion, as people representing the deserting disciples read the various shadows from scripture, and extinguish the Tenebrae candles one by one. The service concludes in silence, with the last candle (symbolizing Jesus) carried from the church. This candle will remain lit until it is returned to the sanctuary on Easter morning, symbolizing Christ s resurrection from the dead. There will be an Ecumenical Good Friday Service at All Saints Episcopal Church (911 Dowling Blvd., San Leandro) on April 19 th at 12 noon. We are happy to be a part of this ecumenical service. Lauren Patrus-Betzel will be preaching on one of the Last Seven Words, and Toni DiCapua will be playing the organ. We hope that you will come for this meaningful service. On Easter Sunday, April 21 st, we will celebrate Christ s resurrection at our 9:30 am worship service. It will be a grand celebration, with the Chancel Choir, Chancel Bells, trumpets and organ leading us in worship! Christ has risen! He has risen indeed! ACADEMY AWARDS NIGHT March 31 We are in for a real treat at our annual Spaghetti Dinner! On Sunday, March 31 st at 5:00 pm, we will enjoy a delicious Italian meal prepared by Janine Kline. Afterward, a very special program is planned. Our musicians will be singing Music from the Academy Awards! Some of the songs that will be performed are Singin in the Rain ; Somewhere from West Side Story; Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany s; Talk to the Animals from Doctor Doolittle; Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz; Let It Go from Frozen; Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific; and Evergreen from A Star is Born. The four soloists will be Amy Haghighi, Liz Calame, Bob Kraut, and Leland Morine. This is a campership fundraiser, which helps send all of our kids to summer camp! We hope you will come. It s not too late! Call the church office to get your ticket!
2 PALM SUNDAY BREAKFAST Palm Sunday is on April 14 th, and we have a delicious breakfast planned for that morning. The breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m. Tickets will be on sale March 31 st and April 7 th for $7 for adults and youth, $5 for children 6-12 years old, and free for children 5 and under. Don t miss out on this time of great food and fellowship all proceeds will go to support camperships. Our thanks to Sue Robertson, Carol Anderson and their team who prepare the breakfast for us to enjoy! PEAK MISSION TRIP PLANS AND WORK PROJECTS This year our senior highs will be going to Chiloquin, OR on August 4-10 for their annual mission trip. To help them raise money, the students will be completing work projects for members in the church who wish to donate $50 for two students to work for about two hours. Church members will sign up to drive the two students home for the work and bring them back to church on a Sunday (11am - 2 pm: two hours of work plus a little driving time). We ll publish which dates the youth will be available for hire soon - be on the lookout! And meanwhile, check around your home and yard and see what work projects you could use a little help with. Thank you for your ongoing support of our youth! PEAKers are Part of the SF Presbytery Triennium Delegation! Congratulations to Serena Acosta, Shane Carter and Ndidi Godwin for being chosen as delegates to the 2019 PCUSA Triennium. Triennium is our denomination s youth conference which meets every three years. Lauren and these three youth will be traveling to Purdue University (Indiana) July 16 th - 20 th. We look forward to hearing their report when they return from this fantastic opportunity for worship and fellowship. SUMMER CAMP NEWS Now is the time to sign up for summer camp at Westminster Woods! 5 SUMMER DAYCAMP JUNE Summer Daycamp begins on June 24 th, and we are looking forward to a great time! Our theme this year is ROAR: Life is Wild * God is Good! We will learn that no matter what, God is good! Whether life is unfair or scary, or if life changes, or life is sad or good, no matter what, God is Good! If you know of a family who has a child that is 4-years old through incoming sixth grade, there is still time to get them signed up! Please call Lauren Patrus-Betzel right away, so we can get them enrolled! Cost is $50 per child, but we have campership money so don t let that keep anyone away! For the first child in a family, the cost is $50, and for each additional child it is $45, which includes a daycamp t-shirt, lunch for all five days, and arts and crafts supplies. Scholarship help is available. WITH HEART AND HANDS PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY I needed clothes and you clothed me Matthew 25:36 With Hearts and Hands Prayer Shawl Ministry is utilizing their talents and skills to help warm those in the most need, and we would like to invite you and your friends to participate. We are making hats, scarves, cowls, and fingerless gloves. It is time to dust off those knitting needles, crochet hooks, and knitting looms! Don t know how to knit or crochet or need supplies? No problem! Just come to one of our meetings between May and September and we will get you started. Meetings are usually held the first Sunday of each month in the Fireside Room, at 12:30 P.M. All items made will be dedicated on November 10, 2019, and then distributed to organizations that serve the homeless. If you have any questions, please see facilitator Michele Johnson or anyone you see walking around church with a ball of yarn! It takes a team of enthusiastic volunteers to make DayCamp happen - set aside the week of June 24 th and plan to join us for the fun! We need volunteers to work with the kids, support the youth, help in the kitchen, and more - there s a job for EVERYONE! We will have a Daycamp Planning Meeting for all of our volunteers on Sunday, April 28 th from 12:15 pm - 1:15 pm. We look forward to a special presentation in worship on Sunday, June 30th. Plan to join us that day when the children and youth share about their week of learning from the Bible and singing fun songs! Daycamp brochures are available in the narthex, fellowship hall and the office. We hope you ll plan to join us! YOUNG AT HEART Thursday, April 11, 11:30 am The Young at Heart group will be meeting on Thursday, April 11 th for a delicious Hawaiian themed luncheon prepared by Bob Kraut and his team. Afterward, we are looking forward to enjoying HULA DANCERS, with Phyllis Hanan and friends. Be sure to wear your Hawaiian attire! Please note that for this month only, due to Holy Week, our Young at Heart group meets on the second Thursday of the month. Please sign up for the luncheon on Sunday mornings, or call the church office. HIGHLIGHTS 5
