1 Seymour United Methodist Church Jason Gattis, Pastor April 2017 Words from Pastor Jason... Staff Highlights - Susan Cook This month I want to continue what I started last month in highlighting our church staff. They each do an incredible job serving the church and Jesus Christ through the areas they have a passion for. I know for a fact that I was not called to teach children or youth, direct and lead music, play an instrument, fix building issues, create newsletters and bulletins, order supplies, etc. But, others have and because of the love they have for the work they do we are able to serve as a church. This month s highlight is Susan Cook, Director of our Parents Day Out program. Like Michelle, Susan s work at SUMC goes back many years. In fact, all the way back to when the program first started. Susan started as a teacher. She loves children and loves to help make a difference in a child s life. While her start at SUMC started from her love for children, her tenure has been due to the devotion she has for the program. Over the years Susan could have had many opportunities to go to other programs, bigger programs, better paying programs, not just as a teacher but as the director. However, she never pursued those opportunities because she loves PDO UMC. Susan works when the program is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. But, Susan can be seen at the church on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well, creating lesson plans for her classroom, making changes to the weekly teaching schedule, or meeting with potential parents. While all of her work time is taken up on the days PDO is in session, she gives her own time to make sure the program is operating to her standards. As a result, during the three years she has been director, the program has grown to an enrollment of over 100 children. During a time when I have witnessed similar programs close their doors, our program is thriving. However, the best thing you need to know about Susan is that she is working and serving at a church where she is not even a member. She faithfully attends another church in the community but serves SUMC because she knows we are called to serve the church universal. If you have not done so in a while, I encourage you to come by the church any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday morning to check out the PDO program. You will not be disappointed! And, while you re here, say a word of thanks to the teachers and their fearless leader, Susan Cook. Thanks Susan for all you do! Jason

6 Wednesday Shared Supper 5:15 pm You CAN memorize scripture! Ever had a song stuck in your head? An especially annoying one that you didn t like? We all have. Getting a song stuck in your head is proof that music is a powerful tool to help memorization. Think about the ABC tune we use to teach EVERY small child the alphabet. The alphabet has no meaning to a two year old but we still teach this song to them because we know it is foundational to their literacy. Putting the Word of God in your brain is foundational to your spiritual literacy. Here is your: Memorizing Tip of the Month Put Scripture to Song. Use whatever tune fits. Chant or put the words to a rhythm. Play it again and again in your head. Meditated, hum, and really internalize the Word of God. This is a great and super effective technique to use, especially with small children. You will be amazed at how quickly you will be able to say the verse from memory. Thank you to everyone who makes our meal possible! Cost remains $4 per plate, children 2 and under eat free, and the family maximum is $15.* Find the full monthly menu right here and the weekly menu in your Sunday bulletin. RSVP or Standing RSVP is required but no one is ever turned away so by all means, bring a guest! *Family maximum applies to immediate family only: head of households and dependent minor children. On the Menu this Month 4-5 Baked Potato & Super Salad Bar, Banana Pudding 4-12 Roasted Pork Tenderloin, Carrots, Cornbread Dressing, Side Salad & Fruit Bar, Cake and Pie 4-19 Spring Break 4-26 Veggie Plate, Side Salad Bar, Choice Biscuit or Cornbread, Strawberry Lemonade Poke Cake Page 6 All Wednesday evening activities will follow this schedule: 5:15 6:00 pm Fellowship Meal 6:00 pm All group activities begin 6:00 pm M&M s for Children Childcare will be available until 8:00 pm
