2 From the Pastor s Desk Pastor Brenda Lovick Contact Information: : pastor.brendalovick@gmail.com Cell Phone: Dear Friends at EKLC, As you are receiving this newsletter, I am with eleven other people in Houston, TX, at the ELCA Youth Gathering. We are hearing inspiring messages from young people from all walks of life about addiction, about military service, about identity and self-worth. We are learning the multitude of ways that the church makes a difference in the world. We are worshiping together in new and beautiful ways. We are serving in the city to hopefully connect with someone in need and walk alongside them to see our world from a completely different point of view. I am blessed and honored to be able to witness the life and growth in our young people on this trip. I pray that they encounter Jesus in a way that inspires them. I pray that they are changed by this experience. I was changed when I went as a youth to the 1994 ELCA Youth Gathering in Atlanta. Here I am, in the back on the left, in a hotel lobby, posing with a part of my youth group from DeForest. I m still connected with these people, and most of them are attending church and raising families in the church. What I remember most about this trip is the energy that came from a group of over 30,000 people singing and worshiping all in the same space. And then I remember coming back to my little church in DeForest and hearing for the first time that I might have a call to ministry. I was invited to sit and pray with that idea and see what would happen. Something special and mysterious and holy happens at these youth gatherings. I can t control the Holy Spirit, but I can watch and see how the Spirit works in our young people. And I can pray about their future life with God. I thank you for your support of taking our young people to Houston. I thank God that they have this incredible opportunity. Please join me in prayer as we go and gather and grow and be glad, all surrounded by God s grace. Thanks be to God. See you in church! Pastor Brenda Lovick New Membership Class August 5, after worship This meeting is for anyone interested in membership at East Koshkonong Lutheran. Bring your questions about the church and have a conversation with Pastor Brenda. We will meet in the council room. (across the hall from the office) P a g e 2

Thank You. Treasurer s Report Financial Secretary: Elizabeth Kaashagen Treasurer: Holly Loomis Income, May 2018 ~ $15, Expenses, May 2018 ~ $15, Income, Year to date ~ $79, Expenses, Year to date ~ $91, Simply Giving options at EKLC East Koshkonong has an opportunity for you to give your offering with an automatic electronic withdrawal with Simply Giving from Vanco. This makes giving convenient for you, and it helps our congregation have consistent income. In order to sign up for this opportunity, we have a handwritten form for you to complete and turn in to our financial secretary. You can find the form in the narthex. If you have any questions about this, please ask a member of our Stewardship Committee or Financial Secretary Elizabeth Kaashagen. Our Stewardship Committee is Kristen Lien, Sonja Jacobson, Brenda Schroeder, Hilary Terland, Gloria Fruit. Thank you! Stewardship Update: Tithe Challenge! Just July. Just 10%. We all give to God in various ways. We use our time and talents in church, we pray for our friends and neighbors and share our financial bounty. We also use the resources that God had given us in many ways. We enjoy nature, spend time with our families, and eat the bountiful harvest that comes from fields this time of year. No matter how much we give to God, it can never equal what he has given to us. The sacrifice of his only son allows us many daily blessings. We challenge you in the month of July to think about that sacrifice and tithe 10% of your income to EKLC. Consider how small the sacrifices that you may need to make in order to honor the great sacrifice given for us. 2 Corinthians 8:7: Just as you excel in everything-- in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us-- see that you also excel in this grace of giving. Just July. Just 10%. EKLC Stewardship Committee P a g e 4

8 News from the church basement. Summer greetings! Some of you have been to see the real Church Basement ladies, and it sounds like it was a good show again. Our ladies continue the mission work here in our own basement. We are so fortunate to have this place where we can be set up and come and work when we need to. Thanks to Peace Circle for serving duties in June, and to Joy Circle who will take care of July for us. Thanks to several of you who helped serve the meal after the Memorial Service for Agnes Goodrich. Thanks to my devoted Meals on Wheels deliverers. Your work is so much appreciated: you are always willing to help, it has been a longer route the last few months, and this time you even had to work your way around some street work. Our next time will be in September. Please start looking for school supplies on sale for putting together our School Kits for Lutheran World Relief. We need spiral notebooks ( 4 per kit), pencils, pens, erasers (those big pink ones), rulers, pencil sharpeners, blunt scissors, crayons (16 or 24 per box). If you will bring these items to church (there will be a place to deposit them in the Narthex), we will get the backpacks filled in time for shipping. Your help with this is really appreciated. Thanks so much. We will not have a regular meeting in July, as our meeting day is during the 4th of July goings on, as well as the Stoughton Fair. We will meet on Thursday, July 19th for sewing from 8 to noon. There will not be lunch served. Have a great summer. God Bless you. This time around, the year is 1969 and the world is changing. As folks protest the Vietnam War and women are demanding equal pay for equal work in their small rural Minnesota community, the ladies of the Lutheran church basement kitchen are dealing with changes of their own.
