2 From the Pastor s Desk Pastor Brenda Lovick Contact Information: : pastor.brendalovick@gmail.com Cell Phone: Dear Friends in Christ, Thank you so much for a very uplifting and affirming annual meeting. For those who weren t there, the congregation moved and approved to make the pastor position full time, a financial and time adjustment from 75% time. I am humbled and blessed to be part of this community of faithful people. What does this mean for my time? I will have a regular weekly day off on Fridays. I will continue my office hours on Tuesdays, which is time when you will almost always be able to call me or stop in and chat and I will be available. I say almost because in the event that there is someone who needs me to visit in the hospital immediately or if someone schedules a meeting with me at the church, I may not be available in the office. I will obviously spend more time in the office throughout the week, but these office hours on Tuesday is the time when my schedule will be freed up for you to know I m there and available. I am available at other times by cell phone or by appointment. My schedule is generally quite flexible for meeting with people. My biggest intention in the additional time is to make more regular visits. If you would like me to visit you in your home or in your workplace, please let me know! I will visit people I hear from first, so if you don t hear from me first, it s likely because I m visiting people who I know would like a visit from me. It will take some time for my family and I to adjust to these changes in our family life. I also need to be intentional in caring for my family and protecting time with my family. Wife/mom/pastor can be a challenging combination, but it is also incredibly fulfilling. I will do my best to steward my time carefully and faithfully to do what God has called me to do. Thank you, EKLC! Lent is just a couple of weeks away! Ash Wednesday begins the season on February 10, and we have worship at 7:00 pm.. We are having a midweek Lenten series for five consecutive Wednesdays during Lent, beginning on February 17, also at 7:00 pm. The series is called Open My Life, Lord, and we will consider how God is opening our lives to reveal God s beauty in the midst of the world s despair. We will read, sing, pray, and reflect. During these Wednesdays, we will also be collecting special offerings for our local food pantries. There are five Wednesdays, so we will collect money and nonperishable items for the five food pantries that we support in our community: Cambridge, Deerfield, Edgerton, Fort Atkinson, and Stoughton. After we collect the goods for the five weeks, we will distribute the offerings equally between the five communities. Did you know that a $10 monetary donation can stretch a lot further than $10 of nonperishable food that you buy yourself out of the grocery store? The food pantry can order food directly from the food bank for literally pennies on the dollar. I ve known food banks to distribute food as inexpensively as $0.18 per item. Food pantries will appreciate either food or money, but please consider this when you consider a donation! May our Lenten efforts serve our neighbor and give God glory! See you in church! Thank You. Treasurer s Report Financial Secretary: Elizabeth Kaashagen Treasurer: Holly Loomis Income, December 2015 ~ $23, Expenses, December 2015 ~ $13, Income, Year to date ~ $180, Please pick up your 2016 Church Offering Envelopes in the Church Narthex. Thank you! From the Church Council In case you didn't hear, the line of credit that was opened to make repairs around the church has been paid off! This line of credit was opened back in 2008 and it was used to repair many areas around the church. Expenses included resurfacing the parking lot/driveway around the church, re-roofing the educational wing, repairing the stained glass windows in the sanctuary, replace the exterior entrance door in the narthex, install new carpeting in the narthex, installing the security camera system in the office, installing a new water heater, baseboard trim work as well as work on the furnaces and boilers. Thank you all for your financial support over the years in helping to maintain the beauty and integrity of our home of worship. Congregational Council Join the Stewardship Committee We have added a new member to the stewardship committee, Lindsay Mani! Welcome to the team! We would like to encourage more people to join the Stewardship team! We value input and fresh ideas on how we can make EKLC a church that really works for its members and our communities! Please contact Kristen Lien, Brenda Schroeder, or Hilary Terland for more information and meeting dates! Exciting news from Stewardship! The stewardship team recently met and discussed the idea of donating to build a Habitat for Humanity home! However, before we commit with Habitat, we would like our members and friends to commit to this project. We are looking at donating to their "Faith Build", where we would partner with 11 other churches in Dane county to build one home. Our "Apostle Share" would be $7,500 plus 5 volunteer build days of 8 people each day. So what we are looking for at this time are people that would be willing to commit to these 5 build days so we can fulfill our share of building this home. Volunteers must be 18 and older (16-17 with signed permission slip from parents), and DO NOT need to be just from our church! So ask your friends or family members that are not currently EKLC members for their volunteer participation. Please contact Hilary Terland by phone (608) or hterland@outlook.com if you are willing to donate time to the build days, or if you have questions. There will also be a sign up sheet in the Narthex, as well as more information. P a g e 3 For it is in giving that we receive. -St. Francis of Assis

8 The Lost Is Found In February of 2015, East Koshkonong Lutheran Church, rural Cambridge, celebrated the 170 th anniversary of the dedication of their first church building, the Log Church. In researching various documents, it was discovered that a silver altar chalice had been given as a gift to the Koshkonong congregations from the children of the late Bishop Sorenssen of Akershus Diocese in Christiania (Norway). The chalice was crafted in 1833 in Kongsberg, Norway and brought to America by the Rev. J. W. C. Dietrichson on his return from Norway to serve as their pastor. Rev. Dietrichson presented the altar chalice in the East Koshkonong Church on Sept. 28, 1846; and to the West Koshkonong Church on Oct. 4, The chalice was intended to serve the congregations on the Koshkonong Prairie as an altar chalice. It would have traveled with Rev. Dietrichson as he ministered to the people on the Koshkonong Prairie. The Rev. Dietrichson was instrumental in organizing many of the Norwegian Lutheran congregations in southern Wisconsin in the mid 1840s and 1850s. One hundred years later, in the summer of 1956, this long-forgotten silver chalice was found behind the altar of the West Koshkonong Church. In April of 1958 it was on display at the West Church and in good condition with the Latin inscription being quite legible. Sometime later, it was used in a celebration service by a neighboring congregation. After this specific use of the silver chalice, no one knew where the chalice was stored. When the altar chalice could not be found in time for the 170 th anniversary in February of 2015, help was later requested from area churches where Rev. Dietrichson would have conducted worship services in the mid-1850s. This included West Koshkonong (rural Stoughton), Christ Lutheran in DeForest, Norway Grove Memorial Church in rural DeForest, and Grace Lutheran Church in Cambridge. Lay people, staff and pastors searched storage areas and cupboards and talked with older members of their congregations. In August of 2015 some 50 (plus) years of last being seen the silver altar chalice was re-discovered! It was layered with dust and found in a dark corner of a lower cabinet. Thanks to a curious and persistent pastor Pastor Richard Dowling the lost has been found and the silver chalice is once again on display at the West Koshkonong Lutheran Church, rural Stoughton, Wisconsin. -This article was compiled by Bonnie Ehrke; 2 nd great granddaughter of Amund Anderson who was one of the founding settlers on the Koshkonong Prairie. The people of East Koshkonong first met in the barn of Amund Anderson on September 1, 1844 under the leadership of the Rev. J. W. C. Dietrichson. Holy Communion Class On March 6 at 11:30, Pastor Brenda will lead a class about what Lutheran Christians believe around Holy Communion. This class is an opportunity to discuss and learn together what Holy Communion means for us. All people of all ages are welcome, and especially children and parents preparing for taking communion for the first time. In the tradition of Martin Luther, children may begin any time after they are baptized at a time that is determined through mutual conversation including the pastor, the child, and parents or sponsors involved. We will recognize those who have prepared for communion on Maundy Thursday, March 24. The class will include lunch and making bread! We will be finished by 3:00 pm. P a g e 8
