WELCA 2012 Page 5 WOMEN OF THE ELCA Of The East Koshkonong Lutheran Church 454 East Church Road Cambridge, Wisconsin Telephone: Preamble Mindful that our Lord Jesus Christ, the divine head of the church, made use of the service and devotion of women during the days of His earthly ministry, and desiring in our day likewise to follow and serve Him, We now, with united effort, dedicate ourselves to the furtherance of his kingdom by a stewardship of life and service to the glory of the triune God.

WELCA 2012 Page 6 Membership All confirmed women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are Women of the ELCA. It is recognized that women will serve in various areas of Christian service. Women who must limit their service in the Congregation to such activities as the choir, church school, altar guild, council, etc. are still part of the Women of the ELCA. It is also recognized that some women, because of small children, disabled, aged or infirm family members, may not be able to take responsibilities in other Christian service at least for a while. All women of the congregation beyond confirmation age are the concern of the Women of the ELCA and are considered in planning. Here at East Koshkonong all women who are out of school and /or married have been added to circles to give them contact with the activities and publications of the Women of the ELCA.

WELCA 2012 Page 31 General Assembly Instructions For Lutheran World Relief Kits Lutheran World Relief s Quilt & Kit Ministry is highly regarded throughout the world because of the quality and consistency of the Quilts and Kits we share. Your careful adherence to the instructions in this guide will ensure that all LWR Quilts and Kits are: Useful. LWR works closely with our overseas partners to determine the best contents to include in Kits. Your Kits will do the most good possible when containing only the items listed in these guidelines. Consistent. Consistency of Quilt sizes and Kit contents helps our partners plan properly for distributing a shipment, and keeps international shipping processes cost-effective and efficient. Disparity in Kit contents can cause costly delays. Fair. When all Kits contain the same items, recipients are treated equally and fairly which is important for those who have already experienced a great deal of injustice or tragedy. For Quilts and all Kits, please also follow these guidelines: Please give new items only, except where otherwise noted. Sending top quality items shows the greatest care and respect for the dignity of the recipient. Quality items also withstand the harsh conditions that many people who receive these supplies are facing. Please do not donate items with any religious symbols, messages or with your congregation s name. LWR provides Quilts and Kits based on need, regardless of religious creed. Religious references may be misinterpreted by the governments of the receiving countries, jeopardizing the delivery to the people who need the items most. Please do not donate any items decorated with a U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage. LWR and our overseas partners have access to areas of the world others do not because we are impartial humanitarian organizations. If our intentions are misinterpreted as being politically motivated, our work, our partners and the people we assist could be endangered.

How to Pack & Send Packing your Quilts and Kits WELCA 2012 Page 32 Pack completed Quilts and Kits, like items together, in boxes. Label contents in LARGE, BLOCK LETTERS on the outside of the boxes. Use strong cartons secured with packing tape, not to exceed 40 pounds. Do not use plastic or paper bags to pack donations. Shipping or Delivering your Quilts and Kits Include the name and address of your congregation on each box, label contents and send prepaid to or drop off at the LWR warehouse closest to you: Lutheran World Relief 398 East Richmond Street South St. Paul, MN Lutheran World Relief 601 Main Street PO Box 188 New Windsor, MD The warehouses accept items year-round. Call ahead for driving directions and hours of operation if you are personally delivering your donations.

WELCA 2012 Page 33 Fabric Kits Teach a Person to Sew and...you ve given them tools they can use to earn an income, support their family, and break out of poverty. Many of the thousands of Fabric Kits Lutheran World Relief distributes are used in vocational training programs to teach young men and women useful and marketable sewing skills. Assembling Fabric Kits Please review the General Assembly Instructions on page 31 before collecting items for the Fabric Kits. Read How to Pack and Send Fabric Kits. Please do not enclose the Kit or any of its contents in plastic bags. Please include all of the requested items in each Fabric Kit. Do not add other items. Include the following items in each Fabric Kit: Two pieces of cotton or cotton-blend fabric (no knits or 100% polyester); fabric should have no stains or holes and be cut into pieces measuring: 2¼ yards of 60 wide fabric, or 3 yards of 44 wide fabric, or 4 yards of 36 wide fabric Two spools of neutral-colored, general purpose thread, yards each Fold thread and one piece of fabric inside second fabric piece and tie with yarn, sturdy string, ribbon or strip of fabric. Do not enclose the Fabric Kit or any of its contents in a plastic bag.

WELCA 2012 Page 34 Mission Quilts So Much More Than a Blanket When you make and send a Quilt, you are not only comforting someone you have never met, but providing an object that is useful in ways you probably never imagined. In addition to being a cozy, clean new bed cover, it can be: A baby carrier, tied around a mother s back; a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables; a sack for transporting those goods to market; a sunshade; a shawl; and most importantly a constant reminder that someone, far away, cares a lot. LWR Mission Quilts Are Easy to Make Please read the General Assembly Instructions on page 31 before purchasing materials. Keep in mind that the ultimate purpose of a Quilt is to provide warmth, and choose your fabrics and filler accordingly. Even in warm climates, the temperatures can drop dramatically at night. How to Make an LWR Mission Quilt in 3 Easy Steps 1. Place a piece of fabric measuring 64 X 84 right side down on the table, followed by a filler measuring 60 X 80, and then another piece of fabric, also measuring 60 X 80, right side up on top of the filler. 2. Tie the layers together using crochet or similar cord, or machine-quilt them together. 3. Bring the edges of the 64 X 84 piece over the top, pin and machine-stitch the edge, using a zigzag stitch if possible. LWR Quilts should measure approximately 60 X 80. Full-size Quilts best serve adult recipients and children as they grow older. Please donate only fullsize Quilts. Tips Quilt tops and bottoms can be made from whole pieces of fabric or any type of patchwork pattern of smaller squares. Twelve 21-inch squares or 48 eleven-inch squares sewn together using a half-inch seam allowance make a 60 X 80 top. Recommended fabrics for LWR Quilts include cotton, cotton blends, twill, corduroy, polyester knits, fleece and donated upholstery and drapery samples (no fiberglass). Please ensure that there are no stains or holes before using in a Quilt. Use crochet or similar cord for tying. It is easier to thread and pull through than yarn and is more durable. Ties should be no more than 8 to 10 inches apart.

WELCA 2012 Page 35 Personal Care Kits When natural disaster strikes or political conflict flares, families often have little chance to gather their belongings before fleeing the danger. They arrive in a refugee camp or other place of safety scared, vulnerable an dirty from the travel. The simple items included in a Personal Care Kit allow them to wash away the dirt and sweat, with the fresh scent of soap and the softness of a towel as reminders of someone s care and concern for them in their plight. Assembling Personal Care Kits Please review the General Assembly Instructions on page 31 before collecting items for the Personal Care Kits. Read How to Pack and Send Personal Care Kits on page 32. Please do not enclose the Kit or any of its contents in plastic bags. Please include all of the requested items in each Personal Care Kit. Do not add other items. Include the following items in each Personal Care Kit: One light- to medium-weight, bath-size towel (approximately 52 X 27 or smaller), dark color recommended Two bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in original wrapping One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging* One sturdy comb, remove packaging One metal nail clippers (with or without attached file), remove packaging *Toothbrush multi-packs may be used by sealing an individual toothbrush in a business-size envelope; no plastic bags or wrap Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. Soap LWR accepts new bars of any brand soap, in their original wrapping. All bar sizes are accepted; however, bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) are highly preferred.

WELCA 2012 Page 36 School Kits Education is important for any community, especially where poverty or disaster has limited the options for young people to reach their potential. School Kits contain essential supplies to help children-and in some cases, adults-continue learning despite the hardships they face. And that learning leads to a better life for them, their families and their communities. Assembling School Kits Read How to Pack and Send School Kits on page 32.. Do not enclose the Kit or any of its contents in plastic bags. Please include all of the requested items in each School Kit. Do not add other items. Include the following items in each School Kit: Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper approximately 8 X 10½ ; no loose-leaf paper One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other One pencil sharpener One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well) Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band Five ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with a rubber band One box of 16 or 24 crayons One 2½ eraser One sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag approximately 14 X 17 with shoulder straps (no standard backpacks) Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. All items should be new and in good condition. Remove any excess packaging, pack all items in bag and close. Do not enclose the Kit or any of its contents in plastic bags.

WELCA 2012 Page 37 Baby Care Kits Baby Care Kits are distributed as part of emergency and relief efforts, to be sure, but they are also given out as part of LWR health initiatives to encourage women to seek prenatal care. These kinds of programs help more babies in rural, poor areas receive a healthy start in life. We hope you will join us in this effort! Assembling Baby Care Kits Please review the General Assembly Instructions on page 31 before collecting items for the Baby Care Kits. Please do not enclose the Kit or any of its contents in plastic bags. Please include all of the requested items in each Baby Care Kit. Do not add other items. Include the following items in each Baby Care Kit: Two lightweight cotton t-shirts Two long- or short-sleeved gowns or sleepers (without feet) Two receiving blankets, medium-weight cotton or flannel, or crocheted or knitted with lightweight yarn, up to 52 square Four cloth diapers, flat fold preferred One jacket, sweater or sweatshirt with a hood, or include a baby cap Two pairs of socks One hand towel, dark color recommended Two bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) of gentle soap, in original wrapping Two diaper pins or large safety pins Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. Gently used, clean items (no stains or tears) can be substituted for new ones. Wrap items in one of the receiving blankets and secure with diaper pins. Do not enclose the Kit or any of its contents in plastic bags. Tips Sizes up to 24 months may be used. Varying the sizes of the clothing items included will make the Baby Care Kit useful as the baby grows. Sweaters may be knitted or crocheted from leftover yarn, or made from heavy double knits or fleece. Select a pattern that suits your skill level. Preferred styles have buttons or ties down the front. Click here for pattern recommendations. Diapers can be made from flannel or even by recycling t-shirts. Call for pattern recommendations or visit lwr.org/beinvolved and click on Baby Care Kits. If knitting or crocheting receiving blankets, including one knitted/crocheted blanket and one flannel blanket will provide maximum versatility.
