1 Sundays and Beyond SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH Join us for a special day celebrating the beginning of the church school year! The excitement begins at 9:00 am worship with the Blessing of the Backpacks and follows with a fun scavenger hunt! East Koshkonong Lutheran Church September Newsletter GREETINGS FROM PASTOR DAVE! Are you a practicing Christian? a friend asked in the course of a conversation. No, I laughed, I got it right the first time. Is this how you think about being a Christian? Because of our sinfulness we never get it totally right. We must continually practice our faith. We must continually practice being disciples of Christ. One of the things we need to practice regularly is prayer. P R A Y Prayer is the way a disciple enjoys an intimate relationship with God. Prayer can be private or public, ritualized or conversational, silent or out loud, spoken or sung, words or action, simple or profound. Through prayer God s will is discerned and greater clarity is gained for our journey. Prayer is powerful. Indeed, God s creative, redeeming and healing power is often directed through prayer. Jesus modeled the power and importance of prayer and provides our inspiration to embrace a prayerful stance toward all moments of life. One of the key ways Jesus showed his love for his Father was by regularly engaging in prayer. Throughout the Gospels we read how Jesus went up to a mountain to pray or knelt down and prayed or continued all night in prayer. As Jesus prayed, he gained a clearer sense of who he was (his identity) and what he was to do (his mission). Before he taught or healed, before choosing the Twelve or submitting his will to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed. Whatever the opportunity or challenge, Jesus turned to his Father first and sought the guidance of God. Prayer is Adoration (praise, honoring God), Confession (saying I m sorry, acknowledging sin, that I can t do it on my own ), Thanksgiving (saying thanks, counting blessings, allowing God s perspective to shape life) and Supplication (asking for, praying for others, petitionary in character) ACTS. The Lord s Prayer and Luther s interpretation in the Small Catechism provide ample instruction for the content and elements of prayer and a prayerful life. Part of a disciple s job description is to pray frequently. Share the fun bring a friend! Problems just tumbled about me, And heavier came each task, Why doesn t God help me? I wondered. God answered, You didn t ask. I wanted to see joy and beauty, but the day toiled on gray and bleak; I wondered why God didn t show me; God said, But you didn t seek. I tried to come into God s presence; I used all my keys at the lock; God gently and lovingly chided, My child you didn t knock. I woke up early this morning, and paused before entering the day; I had so much to accomplish that I had to take time to pray. 2 MEETING GOD AGAIN, FOR THE FIRST TIME Here are answers to the questions for last month s readings and below you will find questions for this month s readings. Week 36 starts with Sunday September 1, READING THROUGH THE BIBLE QUIZ Answers to questions from weeks Week 32: Scholars believe that the Israelites were not truly monotheistic (worshiping one God) until after the Babylonian captivity. One indication of this is where God tells Jeremiah not to intercede on behalf of the people, for the people are making cakes for the queen of heaven which was the Assyro-Babylonian goddess Ishtar, an astral deity associated with Venus. She was a goddess of both war and fertility. Jeremiah lived around 600 B.C.E. which is over 600 years after Moses. Where do you find God telling Jeremiah not to pray for the people because of worship of the queen of heaven? ANSWER: Jeremiah 7:16-20 Week 33: This Old Testament passage is quoted in the New Testament book of Hebrews 8:8-12 and 10: In this passage God claims that God will make a new unilateral covenant with the people where God s law will be written on their hearts and where God will remember their sin no more. Where do you find this? ANSWER: Jeremiah 31:31-34 Week 34: The kings of Israel were told that as long as they followed God s way of justice and righteousness, there would be a descendent of David on the throne. We know that most of the kings failed to do this and thus destruction came to Israel. In the following verse the writer acknowledges the result of this disobedience: The Lord has done what he purposed, he has carried out his threat; as he ordained long ago, he has demolished without pity; he has made the enemy rejoice over you, and exalted the might of your foes. Where do you find this verse? ANSWER: Lamentations 2:17 Week 35: When and where did receive his call to be a prophet to God s people? What was s occupation at the time? ANSWER: 1:2-3 received his call on the fifth day of the fourth month in the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin. He was by the River Chebar in the land of the Chaldeans (the plains of southern Mesopotamia). His occupation was priest. Questions for the readings for weeks Week Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Daniel 1-2 Daniel 3-4 Daniel 5-6 Daniel 7-9 Daniel Hosea 1-4 Hosea 5-9 Hosea Joel 1-3 Amos 1-3 Amos 4-6 Amos Obadiah & Jonah Micah 1-4 Micah 5-7 Nahum 1-3 Habakkuk 1-3 Zephaniah 1-3 Haggai Zechariah 1-6 Zechariah 7-10 Zechariah Malachi 1-4 Matthew 1-4 Matthew 5-7 Matthew 8-9 Week 36: After having proclaimed the destruction of Israel by its enemies, God speaks to the people through giving them hope and saying that God will bring the people of Israel back to their land. God shows his power to by having speak to dry bones that are then brought to life by God. Where do you find this very familiar story? Week 37: In this chapter we are told that four young Israelites were educated and then assigned to work in King Nebuchadnezzar s court (in Babylon). Their Hebrew names were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. What Babylonian names did the palace master give to them? (Keep in mind that whenever there is a new name given someone in the Bible, you can expect they will play a significant role in a story that follows.) Week 38: This verse is used as the basis for the Gospel Acclamation used during Lent in Liturgical Settings 3, 4, 7, and 10 of the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW). Week 39: It is said that John 3:16 is a gospel in miniature, in that in just a few words we find God s loving action to save us from sin. In the Old Testament we find a verse that provides a succinct summary of how we are to relate to God and to our fellow human beings. Where do you find this verse? Week 40: Matthew traces Jesus ancestry all the way back to Abraham, the one who God promised would be the ancestor/father of a great nation. Because this was a patriarchal society, it is the men who are listed in this family tree. However, there are five women listed. This indicates that they played a significant role in God s plan of salvation. Name these five women and in what chapter and verse they are found. P a g e 2

The education of our youth is so important - especially in learning about the Bible and God's word. What they learn in their youth stay with them throughout their lives. But learning shouldn't stop with the youth so we are also looking at having bible studies and adult forums, as we are never too old to learn. We will keep you posted on when those will be. Education - how important is it to you and your family? Be sure to take part in what EKLC has to offer to all age groups. If you see anything that is in need of repair (door repair, light out; painting, etc), please let one of the members of the property committee know: Kurt Klemp, Dave Repyak, Hal Schuh or Lane Taylor. 5 East Koshkonong Wish/Needs List From time to time we hear that someone would like to make a memorial gift to East Koshkonong Lutheran Church and are asked in what ways these gifts could be used. We have formed a Wish/Need List Committee which has compiled a list of items the church could use or things that need to be done. Every month there will be a rotating list of wishes/needs printed in the newsletter. If you would like to make a donation by memorial or otherwise for something on this list, you may contact any member of this committee: Judy Rusch, Carolyn Lien, Marge Stach, and Carole Kenseth. Sacristy/Altar Guild New roof structure over outside of Sacristy entrance Narthex Paint walls and fill cracks Paraments red or purple Sanctuary Office New carpet Extra funds for mailings Kitchen Updates. (Miscellaneous) New Christmas decorations Paint for kitchen cupboards-cheaper than replacing them New kitchen countertops New kitchen sink The Gift of Prayer: Praying from Z to A! All the way back at the beginning of the year of our Lord 2013 we began an intentional act of praying for members of this faith community called East Koshkonong Lutheran Church. We have prayed through the entire membership list twice and at the end this month we will finish praying for our members for the third time. If you haven t started daily prayer for our members there is no time like the present! Also, if you would like to join with others to pray we have two opportunities: Every Wednesday at 10:30a.m..we gather in the East Koshkonong Lutheran Church sanctuary to pray for members of this congregation and that includes YOU! In fifteen minutes we pray for those who are listed on the Praying from Z to A calendar that week. We also meet late afternoon to do the same. Beginning Wednesday September 11 th we will meet at 5:45p.m. (immediately before Confirmation class) to pray. Come on Wednesdays in the morning or late afternoon to lift up your brothers and sisters in Christ in prayer. If you can t come every week, come when you can! P a g e 5

6 BLESSING OF BACKPACKS AND SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER INSTALLATION ON RALLY SUNDAY September brings the beginning of a new school year and the beginning of a new year of teaching in the Church. So, on Rally Sunday, Sunday September 8 th we will give thanks to God for education in general and specifically the great teaching about God s love for us in Jesus Christ that takes place within our faith community called East Koshkonong Lutheran Church. So bring your backpacks, briefcases and book bags on this Sunday so their use in the coming year may be blessed. And come to surround our own Sunday School teachers with prayer and blessing for the coming year as they tell and retell our children the great stories of God s love for us as told in the Bible! The Bible is the living word of the living God. It is where Christ s disciples go to ask what God has done, what God is doing and what God is yet to do. It witnesses to God s gracious activity in the world, and to the faith of God s people over time. It shows us a God who loves us and helps us to see our own need for God. As such, it is fitting that our congregation help and encourage God s children (OF ALL AGES) to read, study and meet God. On Sunday September 15 th we ask and encourage all children and adults to bring your Bibles to worship for a blessing of Bibles. Three-year-olds (entering Sunday School for the very first time), incoming second-graders and all of our seventh and eighth grade Confirmation students will be given new Bibles on this date. So bring your Bibles for a blessing a blessing that you might be led to a lifetime of Bible reading, study and revelation, all to God s glory! Women s Evening Bible Study. Ladies of the church are once again invited to join an evening bible study on Tuesday, September 10th at 6:30pm again at CamRock Sport & Café. The work is in progress, but we should be able to meet in this room early this fall. See you all in September! Pastor Dave P a g e 10

11 EAST KOSHKONONG LUTHERAN CHURCH SHARES THEIR GIFTS ART SHOW! DO YOU LIKE TO BAKE COOKIES? November 23 from 1-4 P.M. will be the date for our members to display their artistic talent in whichever medium they wish. We will display the art work in the narthex and sanctuary on Saturday and leave it for Sunday worship as well. There will be refreshments in the basement and visitors to the show are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the food bank or a monetary offering. WE welcome all artists and encourage you to invite your friends and family to witness all of the gifts our members possess. Do you like to bake cookies? If you do, we would like to hear from you. As a service project our confirmation class will be sending CARE PACKAGES to our college students several times throughout the school year. These packages will include a variety of home-made cookies. We would like to have some EXPERT cookie bakers volunteer to help our students with this project. We have several who have responded to this request and could always use a few more. Please let Pastor Dave know if you are interested in helping with this ministry project. ARK Pondering. Here is our opportunity for discipleship among our community of friends and family. Scripture addresses this in these two passages. John 13:35 "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." 1 Timothy 2:3-4 "For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth." According to the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin Research Report, 54.1 per cent of Dane County are unchurched. Our mission is to share the gospel and love of Christ with these people and to bring them into the community of believers. P a g e 11

As we enjoy all the blessings that God has granted to us there are still those in our communities who suffer with financial struggles. Some need gas money so they can get to work or to doctor appointments. Some just run short of funds to pay for their housing. Still others can t afford milk to put on their cereal for breakfast. The Good Samaritan Fund here at EKLC provides assistance to those who have these types of short-term needs. Consider making a regular gift to this fund so that we will continue to be able to help care for our neighbors in need whenever their needs arise.
