In 1932, Pastor Ryding donated one month s salary and took a 10% cut in salary to help offset the year end s debt of $285. During he volunteered further reductions in his salary. Despite the hard times suffered by the congregation, Ryding notes in the 1934 annual report, The year just closed has been a trying one for our people, but God has blessed us richly, often much more so than we had expected. 4 It s summer the pace is a little slower so just a short article for August. I was pleased to be able to attend Emanuel s Scandinavian Smorgasbord in July! The food was amazing and my impression was that it was a great success for the church and the community. Kudos to all those who organized it, provided food, served and helped with set up and clean up. I know that such things don t just happen but that many hands are involved! Thanks also to Sarah for donating the beautiful quilt to be raffled off! (My wife was disappointed she didn t win!) My step-son Rob who lives in Maine was here for a couple of days visiting Kathy and me and the timing was such that he too was able to attend the dinner. Besides having a great meal, on the way back to Ishpeming he said, You know, the people up here really are different. In part he was talking about hospitality but the word he used to describe the difference was genuine and it s the same word I have used to describe the people up here. It s one of the reasons I like serving in the UP and maybe the biggest reason I wanted to come back here after having left and gone back to New England for a few years. What Rob noticed as he talked with people was that they are who they are and they accept you for who you are without passing judgment or worrying about what line of work you re in or how much money you make. Instead they re just interested in who you are and getting to know you even if they might never see you again.

I wanted to share Rob s comment with you because once in awhile it s good to be reminded of things that we perhaps take for granted. It s good to be reminded that people do notice the difference. 6 THANK YOU to all who made our Scandinavian Smorgasbord dinner a success! Thank you to the wonderful kitchen crew that made and served the potato sausage, Swedish meatballs and ham, to those that made the side dishes, shopped for supplies, promoted the event, set up the fellowship hall and centerpieces, greeted our guests, sold quilt raffle tickets, replaced and cleaned place settings, washed dishes, hauled the garbage, cleaned the kitchen and put away the tables and chairs! We couldn t have done this event without everyone s help! We served close to 150 guests and received $1936 in donations. Those that attended enjoyed the food and fellowship and we are grateful they attended and took part in an event celebrating our 125th Anniversary coming in August 2019! The winner of the Quilt Raffle is Lezle Vonck. We sold $940 of tickets for the new roof! Thank you to Sarah Kimball for making and donating the quilt, Roger for heading up the ticket sales and all who helped sell the tickets! Our next quilt raffle is for the annual bazaar along with many beautiful hand crafted items too! Thank you to Mary Lou Behrens for sponsoring the August worship bulletins in memory of Oscar & Ingrid Johnson and Harvey and Frances Johnson.

It is that time of year again when we start collecting school items for the bags we send out to Lutheran World Relief.

The school kits contain: 4 70- sheet notebooks, ruler, 5 unsharpened #2 pencils, 5 black or blue ballpoint pens(no gel ink), pencil sharpener, blunt scissors, box of 16 or 24 crayons, 2 1/2 inch

We continue to collect food donations for the Country Cupboard located in the fellowship hall. Donations will be brought to our local St.

7 It is that time of year again when we start collecting school items for the bags we send out to Lutheran World Relief. The school kits contain essential supplies to help children continue learning in the face of serious obstacles. Learning leads to a better life for them, their families and their communities. The school kits contain: sheet notebooks, ruler, 5 unsharpened #2 pencils, 5 black or blue ballpoint pens(no gel ink), pencil sharpener, blunt scissors, box of 16 or 24 crayons, 2 1/2 inch eraser. Our stores have all them items on Back to School Sales, so now is the time to stock up on these items for our school bags. Last year we sent 40 school bags, lets try for 50 this year. We continue to collect food donations for the Country Cupboard located in the fellowship hall. Donations will be brought to our local St. Vincent s in Gwinn or the Food Pantry at the Victory Church of Sawyer. Quilting for both Lutheran World Relief and for the annual bazaar continues on Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. at Toni Peterson s home. All are invited to join! Our next Outreach Committee meeting is Thursday, August 9 at 10 a.m. at Emanuel. Thank you for all of your support! Sarah Kimball Picnic Tables For Sale We have 3 picnic tables for sale. They are wooden, heavy and about 8 feet long and are leaning against the storage shed for the lawn mower. They are $20 each and you need to do the hauling. Contact the office if you are interested at Sign up sheets for both providing a treat during fellowship following worship and trash hauling are on the counter in the fellowship hall. There is always help available serving if needed. Thank you!

10 July Council Meeting Highlights ~The Christian Education Committee met July 1. They reviewed our First Communion policy and agreed to support: If a child does not feel comfortable in a classroom setting for the First Communion class instruction, a parent or grandparent may use the curriculum at home, with a follow-up with pastor after completion. First Communion classes will be held for 3 weeks at Emanuel; September 16, 23 and 30th. September 16 will be our Rally Day this fall for Christian Education. Next Christian Education meeting: August 19. ~There was a recent attempted break-in at Emanuel on Saturday, July 7. The door handle was broken and the screen cut on the kitchen door. The building was thoroughly searched by authorities and no evidence of anything taken or of anyone in the building. ~125th Anniversary Committee continues to plan and promote events this year and in Much preparation for the Scandinavian Smorgasbord dinner continues. Wooden Commemorative ornaments will be sold at the Skandia Day activities along with a condensed version of our 125th Anniversary pamphlet being available. ~There is no news for a new pastor at Emanuel. Pastor Geier shared that the next ELCA National Youth Gathering will be in Minneapolis in 3 years. In order to attend, youth need to have completed the 8th grade. Since it will be in Minneapolis, it may be easier for our youth to attend without the costly airfare expenses. ~ Financing the church roof through Huntington Bank: 10 year loan, 10% down, monthly payment would be $580. With 20 % down, $490. Final word still pending from Mission Investments, but a 10 year loan with no money down, a monthly payment would be $518, with no penalty for paying off the loan early. ~A GoFundMe account has been set up for the new roof online. ~The Local Benevolence Designation for 10% of our giving on Sunday, August 19 is the Keweenaw Disaster Fund. ~Our next council meeting is Sunday, August 19 at 1 PM. *The complete July council meeting minutes (pending council approval) and financial reports are posted on the bulletin boards in the entry ways to both the sanctuary and fellowship hall.

( Love In the Name of Christ) reports for June: 14 calls and 10 intakes, 8 non-financials requests, 8 financial requests, 3 referrals were made to churches or church ministries, 6 referrals were made to agencies, and 2 Pastoral visits. 9 volunteers helped with a basement clean-up of trash removal, mowing a ladies yard, helping a lady fix her door and other repairs with 27 hours of volunteer time. As you can see Love INC. is busy helping people in our communities. They are in need of volunteers to help with all the varies request that come into the clearing house. If you can spare a few hours a week or a month and if you have questions about Love INC.. please talk with Sarah Kim- God s Work. Our hands. Sunday is September 9. Nationwide the ELCA have gathered on this date to share their gifts and faith through serving their neighbors and communities. We Plan on finishing up painting the out buildings at the Skandia Township Community Center. We need volunteers to help with this task. May Enlightener Emanuel Lutheran Church May 2018 Enlightener 1910-1919 Church life during this decade included Sunday School, Confirmation Classes (taught in both Swedish and English), Men's Brotherhood, and Luther League.
