When old Kng Wnter heaved a sgh of north wnd and settled down to real busness last Thursday nght he wrought some nterestng changes at S. T. C. "It's snowng!" shouted some dlgent grl stayng up late to study. "Snowng!" echoed the gleeful cry from hall to hall. Wth that the whole of S. T. C. was astr. There was a mad rush for the wndows to watch the soft downy flakes of snow gently fall upon the earth. Next mornng many a late sleeper ventured out to breakfast Just for the sheer fun of t. Many a senor sacrfced her tradtonal dgnty and performed unque gymnastcs n descendng the hll from the Senor Buldng. The fast fallng flakes gave habtual day dreamers somethng to stare at; even attentve ndents found t dffcult to resst an occasonal glance at the fascnatng panorama of a whtenng world. It seemed that classes would never end for those that longed to frolc n the great whte spaces. By Judge Walter Malone. When we menton Lncoln, there s ntermngled n our mnds a mass of contradctory thoughts and mental mages. Thnkng Of hm accordng to hs outward appearance we see a tall, lanky, awkward man. all n all crude lookng. But nwardly qute a dfferent sght a gentle sprt, a knd heart, a sense of justce and a lve knowledge Of true democracy. "All hs lfe, a dm sense of destny hung OVW hm and always wth only the dull tools suppled by hs envronment, he strove to lt hmself to meet what fate would exact of hm." Ths s one of the man vantage ponts n whch we fnd many men weak, but where we lml Lncoln strengthened hmself. He was always prepared for any stuaton whch confronted hm. We fnd unpepaedness not only a weakness n governmental affare, bu( n everythng our own everyday lfe, and the thngs n t our classes and our other prvate dutes. Knowng that you are prepared, gves one a feelng of assurance and sell' confdence whch s decdedly lackng when we neglect our dutes and forthcomng events. Do You (are to Remember? Wendng OUr way through the trends of tomorrow, Chershed memores of yesterday wll he Kcked n our treasure chest. Some of us do not realse U we wng our way through college lfe how dear some thngs w ll le to us n the future the deals, golden frendshps, joyous success, chershed ambtons, trals and errors, dsappontments and tears all these through whch our Alma Mater has fostered us. Even m«our wanderng fances glde back to our chldhood days and we long for some ma teal form that could brng more vvdly to our memory those carefree, happy tmes. The same wll he true of our college lfe n those long year- to come. When we are Is Educaton a Racket'.'» "Educaton has runed the country. The term reason you fnd so many fools today s 'cause the world's gettn' over-educated." Thus Mr. Whttca. btng that whte mustache, rasps out hs favorte theme: "Old man Whttca'a n hs dotage rather argue than eat when he's hungry." And thus, the old man's statements are passed up. In tryng to see just why ths old man thought the world was gettng "over-educated," we come to ths concluson: Every day we encounter people who have studed so much that ther heads are so stocked wth what we term theory, or as some would say "book-sense no tme for the practcal thngs lfe offers, whch after all prove the more mportant. There s an old sayng that after teachers teach so many years, you can pck one out n the dark. There are exceptons of course to the rule, but t s certanly true to a certan extent. Teachers seem to develop lttle mannersms pecular to ther professon. They tend to assume a dscplnary ar wth everyone. They are always correctng mstakes n grammar whch sometmes cause rather embarrassng stuatons. Manytake ther work so serously and study the suhjet so thoroughly that they begn to put the theoretcal nto practce before long. people begn to rumor that Mss s hpped. The majorty of us are plannng to be teachers, Thus, even though t's dffcult to realse t at present, we are gong to have to content wth ths same problem. After all, t s so easy to put our professonal lfe nto the part of lfe whch sn't profsson. Very few of us can do ths so successfully that a degree of our personalty sn't lost; therefore let us as oncomng teachers try not to assume the atttude that we know more than the whole world just because we realze n the schoolroom that we know more than the chldren. Let's not try the same dscplnary problems on socety that we do on Johnny and Suse n classes. Let's not go to partes and absent-mndedly correct our brdge partners' errors n grammar. Let's begn to make our professon one n whch we do not become ponted out as "Cut and dred school-marms," who are mply as Mr. Whttca would say, "overeducated." - u Allmnae NeWS Bsc-r-McDanel Mr. and Mrs. J. Mss Annette Roberts of Brstol spent the wvek-end wth frends Book Revew HONOR BOUND In "Honor Bound", Fath Baldwn faces the queston whch puzzles many members of the younger generaton today: Is t possble fox two young people not n love, to make a success of marrage? Mss Baldwn portrays the r.arred lfe of two young people bound by frendshp and t!ve knowledge of unhappy love affars whch left them both stranded. She uses small events Md apparently trval ncdents whch lend surface color to the underlyng drama of happness a:d tragedy. The young marred couple. Lale and Hank, are ham*'capped n the very begnnng by tna lrck of love for each other. However, s love one of the dvne passons whch lasts forever? Or s love u product of sympathetc understandng, close companonshp, and mutual nterests? "Honor Bound" answers all of these questons not merelv as an attractve story, bat as a p:oblem of modern nwv - ago n all Us complcated knpuc.ll ons. Beauty Hnts "I only have eyes for you" as goes the song But are your eyes the kn that a gentleman would lke to have all for hm? If you have small, deep-set eyes, draw a thn lne wth eye pencl out past the end of the upper and lower lashes to make them look larger; but don't let the lnes meet. Blend wth the fnger tp. Use shadow near lash lne, from center out toward comers. It s best not to darken lght lashes and brows for daytme, por evenng brush on brown mascara, delcately separatng the lashes. On the brows touch mascara only to the longest hars, thus avodng a dark lne. Often eyes have a slght, starry look from wearng glasses, whch can be corrected by carefully brushng on mascara wth a nottoo-wet brush. Smooth on eye shadow, too, for depth. Because pluck.'d brows usually spell extreme sophstcaton, rather than wde-eyed nnocence, on the screen, Jean Mur s keepng hers naturally arched. She thnks that too much pluckng takes away character. When she uses mascara, tt s done wthout artfcalty. Now grls, for the next dance be sure to keep n mnd a few of these hnts. S. T. C. Basketeers To Meet W. & M. Contnued from Page 1 was postponed. THE ROTl'XDA, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1936 Dr. Robert Frazer Upon the death of Dr. Cunn"- ham. Dr. Robert Frazer was called to the presdency of the Norma 1 School our college now. Accordng to hs father':, plans, Dr. Frazer as a young boy was destned for the law. Yet there was ever present n hs conscousness, a protest aganst t and a st-ead-1 fast convcton that hs duty was n the drecton of teachng. Actng upon the advce of hs nstructor at the Unversty of Vrgna, he held on to hs law : even declnng an offer to teach n the Florda Mltary Insttute. Later he was able to accept ths poston, and at the end of the war he had become enamored wth teachng and law was abandoned. In the fall of he returned to Vrgna and opened a school for boys. In 1871 he bougnl Fauquer Insttute, a boardng school for grls, at Warrenton. Here he remaned untl 1882, when, yeldng to the wshes of Dr. Curry, one of the beloved founders of our college, he became presdent of Judson Insttute at Maron, Ala. The Industral Insttute and College of Msssspp at Columbus, called hm to servce n He remaned there seven sessons, and made the school the prde ol the state. In February, 1898, Dr. Frazer became the thrd presdent ol our college. Due to hs rchly stored mnd, hs broad knowledge of lte, hs vared and valuable experence n schools of many types, hs lour years resulted n growth an expanson of a steady stable knd. "Hs am n conduct of school affars was, frst, to provde the best possble advantage for the students; second, to offer those advantages to students at the lowest cost that the benefts mght reach the largest number." Then, and today, defnte and vsble fruts of hs work stand out clearly. Among these may be mentoned: a large ncrease n attendance, enlargement of faculty, addton of new departments, notable the separate Department of educaton and department of physcal tranng, wth a large new gymnasum, and nfrmary, a steam laundry and a steam heatng plant. To hm, credt s also due for the organzaton of the Vrgna Normal League that has helped and s helpng today many a student lo obtan an educaton at our Alma Mater. "When Dr. Frazer resgned the presdency of the State Normal School to enter upon he dutam ol Feld Agent of tne General Educaton Board, he left n nuuy many hearts grateful memores o a courteous, cultured, sympathetc Chrstan gentleman of earnest and unbendng prncples, staunchly loyal to hs lofty deals of duty."
