The majorty of us were ether hgh school students or college freshman lvng n qute a dfferent world from that whch we know today. t was the world of the nckle hot dog and the quarter move. t mght be nterestng to recall some of those days we knew. t was certanly the day for the glorfed athlete. When some husky lad proved to be a valuable asset to the hgh school football team, he merely postponed graduaton day for two or three years n order to nsure the teams standng n the local conference. The order of the monogram was the most exclusve and desrable organzaton to be found wthn the realm of the ctys publc schools. School poltcs were sewed up. The best football player was the logcal canddate for presdent of the student body. He was enved by the boys and adored by the grls. He was the toast of the school. When he went on to college to make all-state or all-southern, everybody sad, " told you so." But another facton on the scene of hgh school lfe was slowly makng ts appearance n 94, namely, the zoot-suters, later to be" known by the more common term of "wolf." t was never clear as to the orgn of ths category of adolescence whch caught on and spread so rapdly. t seemed that one day there was an ordnary lookng group of boys and the next there was a young sentry on every corner and at every drug store. They were the same boys, but they had changed. And then the echos of the war n Europe began to grow louder. The conscrpton act was passed. Some of the older college students left school to go to work :for twenty-one dollars a day once a month. 8 ,,... the BLLBOARD By Bll.JL BETHUNE Wth the local cage war gettnl!.: underway, t seems that we may, at long last, remove kn_g football from hs preemnance atop the sports docket and turn our earnest attenton elsewhere. Of course we cant forget the remanng grd actvty. completely, as one or two top dates do reman on ths years card, but henceforth most of the pertnent paragraphs herewthn wll center about the fner ponts of the hoop l!,;ame. Basketball, long a sport of mnor mportance n the South n general and North Carolna n partcular, s rapdly becomngng the "natonal game" n varous sectons of the country and bds far to challenge the supremacy of football here n Tobaccoland at some future date. As we all know, the relatve mportance placed on any sportng event s necessarly measured by the gate that that sport draws, and ths mght lead to some msconceptons concernng spectator nterest locally. The take durng a nghts actvty down at Gore Gym never comes close to the toll at Groves Stadum on a typcal football Saturday; thus we surmse that basketball s stll a long way from the top spot n the popularty poll. However, we must remember that Groves Stadum often has entre sectons vacant whle seats n Gore Gym are bought for blood and brbery only.. The capacty of the arenas hereabouts are the real governng factor n the growth of basketball, not spectator nterest. Any nmnber of tmes last year when headlners were reeled off n the Bg Four, fans had to be turned away n droves. Over at State College, the rate students took the doors of off Frank Thompson Gymnasum n an effort to see the Tech fve tangle wth the Carolna Phantoms. ts easly seen why our old frend, John Q. Fan, would have to reman outsde when the student body comes armed wth claw hammers and rps saws nstead of actvty books. A repeat performance of the same could be forthcomng after the holdays as nothng has been done to elmnate the bottleneck durng the off~season. The new feld house over at State s stll far from completon and only the Duke ndoor Stadum offers the outsder anythng n the way of a guarantee to see topflght college basketball ths wnter. Here n Wake Forest as well as at Carolna and State, t wll be next to mpossble for anyone other than students of the nsttuto~s to vew any cour.t actvty durng january and February. The nterest s certanly here; the accommodatons arent. We all hope that somethng wll be done n the near future to allevate the stuaton, but at the present ths seems very doubtful. You cant put a very close curb on the potentaltes of basketball here n North Carolna when the recepts are fgured before the season opens and the general publc takes to the rados as ther only means of followng the game. Last season, the eyes of the country were on the Bg Four teams as never before, and ths year we a,re promsed even larger patronage. Carolna was the frst team n- the loop to jump nto the natonal lmelght two years ago, and State carred the Tar Heel banner nto the Natonal Tournament last March. Ths trp ts anybodys chance to grab the publcty, snce we wll all be watched and.watched closely. The Bg Four s rapdly acqurn_g the needed prestge that puts a crcuts teams n the bg tme. Thus the possbltes and thus the spectator nterest. State, current defender of the Conference Crown, appears headed toward another banner year. Cases charges have kept ther early.season average well above seventy ponts per try, and have served notce that they-probably wll be bette,- than last year. The Terrors have exh~ted several newcomers to supplement last years torrd frosh combnaton and t would be hard ndeed to sell them short at the moment. Stll, we never m.ow what the future wll brng. Carolna has long been accustomed to holdng the lnes n the trangle, and the Phantoms gave State a real battle over n Durham n the fnals of last years tournament. Tom Hamlton dd lose one or two of hs abler operatves by graduaton but there s no report of hm reachng for the cryng towel yet. Bob Paxton, who was the boy that made the loop all-everythpg and then went on to be named on the AP All Amercan, s back along wth Nemo Nearman, Norm Kohler and the once-great, john "Hook" Dllon. f Dllon and Hamlton patch up last years controversy the Carolna fve wll be well manned wth veterans and looms as a real contender. We hestate to menton Duke for a number of reasons. At the begnnng of football season we sold the Devls far too. short on a-superfcal observaton. Wade came up wth several cnderella men durng the fall and Gerry Gerard mght well do the same on the hardwood. Dukes bggest stars, Bobber Seward and Ed "Koffenberger, are g one along wth Garland, the last of the Lofts brothers. Dck Gordon and Ben Collns are back from last years starters along wth reserves Doug Ausbom and Carl Sapp. Grantng that the Methodst attack dd center around Seward and Koff last wnter, you just never can tell what knd of a team wll come out of West Durham untl the conference play gets tghter. Here at home, due to constructon down n Gore Gymnasum, we havent seen the Deacons perform and wont have the pleasure untl after Chrstmas. We should be able to make a few accurate observatons by ths tme but snce the acton has been so far removed from_ the home court we fnd that speculaton s the case here as elsewhere. Our sentments-lead us to beleve that thngs wll be a lot better ths year._ Certanly we feel that the Deacs wll te n on the playoffs and wll keep cl~ar of the Bg Four lockup n 48. Coach Greason has been usmg a number of combnatons n the early-games n ~n effort to have the strongest quntet on the Jloor -when the battle really gets underway n January.
