Compiled by Lida Robbis. z IN THE NEWS Kisey s Oak Frot Farm, Flemigto, W.Va., has bee amed as a Historic Agus Herd by the America Agus Associatio. The award is preseted to Agus breeders or immediate families who have bee i cotiuous productio of registered-agus cattle for 50 years or more. I 1961, James A. Kisey, with his parets, purchased five registered-agus heifers ad oe bull from their family doctor the doctor who brought me ito this world, accordig to James. That was the official begiig of the family s registered-agus herd, which is still i operatio 54 years later. James parets, C.R. ad Jue Kisey, ra a Holstei dairy from 1932 to I 1961, whe the family decided to trasitio ito a beef cattle operatio, Agus or Hereford cattle were the oly choices available i the area. Charles Haislip, their family doctor, owed a herd of registered-agus, ad James liked that the breed was kow for materal traits ad calvig ease. The Kiseys bought the five yearlig heifers for $200 per head. To sweete the deal, Dr. Haislip also threw i a registered-agus bull. A decade later, after James graduated from college, the Kisey family expaded the herd. They bega performace testig with the state performace program, the later with Agus Herd Improvemet Records (AHIR ). Today, James A. Kisey s so, James F., ows ad maages the herd of 180 registered-agus cows at the farm i orther West Virgiia. The Kiseys market most of their bulls through the West Virgiia Performace Sale i Wardesville, while they sell their cows ad heifers private treaty. The Kisey s pride i the Agus busiess which bega more tha 50 years ago is sure to cotiue for may years to come. Steve Brooks, Bowma, N.D., was elected for a secod term as presidet of the North Dakota Stockme s Associatio (NDSA) durig the 86-year-old orgaizatio s aual covetio ad trade show i September. The 37-year NDSA member; his wife, April; ad two of their three daughters, Cassi ad Skeeter, maage a 600-cow registeredagus operatio ad farm 4,000 acres of wheat, barley, cor, letils ad chickpeas o the family s Brooks Chalky Butte Rach i partership with Steve s brother Rya ad Rya s family. Steve s ad April s daughter, Calli, lives i Washigto. I his remarks durig the covetio s opeig sessio, Brooks highlighted several policy issues facig the North Dakota beef idustry. He said the NDSA would cotiue i the ext year to work for its members iterests o issues ragig from dietary guidelies to revampig the Edagered Species Act (ESA). This orgaizatio was fouded to help prevet cattle rustlig ad protect private property rights, Brooks said. That is still what we re after, to keep our members i busiess ad to protect our membership from the issues that face the idustry today. Brooks poited to the NDSA s work o the ESA, the Waters of the Uited States rule ad defeatig Measure 5 last fall as several examples of the associatio s work to curb federal overregulatio. He remaied optimistic through the recet dowtur i the cattle market. There is still room for more cattle i places like Texas, Oklahoma ad Kasas, Brooks said. NDSA members elected or re-elected six directors to represet their respective districts. Pete Best of Watford City, N.D., was elected to his first four-year term i District 5. Best has served o the NDSA Feeder Coucil ad Nomiatig Committee. He has bee a member of the America Agus Associatio sice I District 1, Kevi Elliott of Clifford, N.D., was re-elected to a secod four-year term. Jeffrey Bu from Lisbo, N.D., was re-elected to a secod four-year term i District 2. I District 3, Tim Erbele, Streeter, N.D., was elected to his first four-year term. Rob Tweete of Hesler, N.D., was re-elected to a secod four-year term i District 4. Rady Schmitt, a 12-year NDSA member, Rugby, N.D., was re-elected to his secod four-year term i District 6. Kapp resides ear Clarksdale, Mo., where he maitais a herd of registered-agus cattle. He has bee a life member of the America Agus Associatio sice Greta (Heismeyer) Krafsur, graduate studet at Colorado State Uiversity, has bee awarded a W.D. Farr Scholarship for the school year from the Natioal Cattleme s Foudatio. Each $12,000 scholarship recogizes outstadig studets who pla to pursue careers i meat sciece ad aimal agriculture. The scholarship will be preseted i Jauary at the 2016 Cattle Idustry Covetio & NCBA Trade Show i Sa Diego, Calif. Krafsur is from Estellie, S.D., ad is a doctoral studet at Colorado State Uiversity, usig her veteriary pathology traiig to explai the developmet of bovie high-altitude disease, kow as brisket disease. She hopes to idetify the biomarkers associated with the pheotype that ca be used to predict disease risk, with the goal of improvig selective breedig, precoditio, ad fatteig regimes. Doc was bor April 6, 1925, i Palmyra to Harry ad Mary (Dickso) Hids. He was a lifelog residet of Palmyra ad a graduate of Palmyra High School. He served i the U.S. Marie Corps durig World War II from He married Clara Eichma Sept. 4, 1949, at the First Baptist Church i Palmyra. Doc received his bachelor s degree i agriculture i 1951 ad his doctorate of veteriary medicie i 1952 from the Uiversity of Missouri Columbia. Oe of the thigs he tried to istill i them all was the value ad importace of a educatio. James Hito, 67, died Oct. 24 at Maplewood Health & Rehab Ceter, Jackso, Te. He was bor Aug. 18, 1948, to James ad Georgia (Bryat) Hito. His wife, Phyllis (Camper) Hito, preceded him i death. James was a U.S. Marie ad a member of the Cumberlad Presbyteria Church i Trezevat, Te. Throughout his career he worked i livestock advertisig, promotio, cosultig ad sales maagemet. He worked for the Livestock Weekly, the Teessee Livestock Associatio as head of promotio ad advertisig, the Teessee Pork Producers Associatio, Freema Publishig ad the Agus Joural. He was a parter i Meg & Hito Sales & Service, worked for Souther Beef Producer, was ower of Hito Sales & Service ad worked for Duck Hill Rach. He worked for Farm Progress ad 4L Hereford Farms. James served as secretary-treasurer of the Teessee Agus Associatio for 29 years, served as secretary-treasurer of Teessee Agribitio for more tha 20 years, ad received the Distiguished Service Award to the livestock idustry from the Uiversity of Teessee.
