The year s results are ecouragig. Aual total costructio spedig i the Uited States icreased i 2012 for the first time sice 2005, postig a gai of more tha 7 percet compared to 2011 aual spedig. Led by firmig i the residetial markets, the costructio ecoomy bega to show further sigs of healig from the Great Recessio. As a result, U.S. cemet demad i 2012 icreased 9 percet to 76.6 millio metric tos. Demad was widely diverget across geographic regios with residetial costructio, oil ad agricultural productio leadig the recovery i Ash Grove s markets. For 2012, Ash Grove cemet shipmet volume icreased 5.1 percet over 2011 results. This icrease was led by a strog demad i the Texas ad Nebraska markets, offset by cotiued weakess i the Arkasas ad Louisiaa markets. O average across all of our markets durig 2012, Ash Grove cemet pricig remaied relatively flat with 2011 results. I total, Ash Grove s cemet plats operated efficietly while producig six millio short tos of cemet, ruig at a 68.2 percet productio capacity utilizatio rate, with costs icreasig 1.2 percet o a per to basis over I compariso, the U.S. cemet idustry capacity utilizatio was approximately 62 percet durig Ash Grove s subsidiary compaies showed improved fiacial performace i O a cosolidated basis Ash Grove s et earigs improved over our 2011 results, but remai far below ecessary sustaiable returs o our asset base due to the cotiued weakess of cemet pricig i may of our key markets. I joiig IECA, Lippert said that cemet maufacturig is very eergy itesive ad while Ash Grove strives to be as eergy efficiet ad evirometally resposible as possible as evideced through the Ash Grove Eergy Maagemet (AGem) process there eeds to be some focus o the coutry maitaiig a affordable, sufficiet supply of all types of eergy. The eergy is here i the U.S., we all just eed to make sure that the resource is maaged i a way that will provide the best beefit for the coutry as a whole, Lippert said. Just like i our iteral AGem process, you ca t maage resources if you do t measure ad pla. The coutry ad idustry have doe a reasoable job evaluatig eergy resources, but have falle short i the log-term plaig process for maagig the resources that have bee idetified. Membership i IECA will give us a additioal forum to address some of these shortfalls. IECA, based i Washigto, D.C., was created to serve the iterests of maufacturig compaies for which the availability, use ad cost of eergy, power or feedstock play a sigificat role i their ability to compete i domestic ad world markets. Promotios Brig New Leadership to the Sales Team Last fall, the compay aouced promotios i its sales leadership teams that reflect the December 2012 retiremet of both Dewey Fore, who led Ash Grove s Midwester sales regio for five years ad completed 26 years with the compay, ad Dave Baker, who led Ash Grove s West sales regio for 16 years ad completed 23 years at Ash Grove. Effective August 1, 2012, Erie Peterso ad Mike Wood were promoted to vice presidet of sales, Midwest ad West, respectively, both reportig to Charlie Suderlad. Peterso has bee i the cemet idustry 20 years ad with Ash Grove 15. The previous five years, he served as regioal sales maager i the compay s Omaha, Neb., sales office where he led a team of four salesme, a techical services maager ad two admiistrative professioals. Peterso serves o the boards of Ash Grove Resources, LLC ad Lyma-Richey Corporatio ad will supervise three sales offices coverig eight states i the Midwest. For log-term success, we have to have a behavioral safety process at the idividual level throughout the plats. Several plats did experiece success. Of special ote are Motaa City ad Rivergate, experiecig 12 years ad 7 years, respectively, without a Lost Time Ijury, each a remarkable achievemet. KiewitPhelps has selected Lyma-Richey s Ready Mixed Cocrete Co. to provide approximately 115,000 cubic yards of cocrete to costruct a ew Commad ad Cotrol Facility for the U.S. Strategic Commad at Offutt Air Force Base i Bellevue, Neb. The 900,000 plus square-foot buildig is scheduled to ope i 2018 ad will replace the existig 55-year-old buildig. U.S. Strategic Commad is resposible for America s military space assets, strategic deterrece ad cyber operatios. Give the extremely importat ad sesitive ature of the project, the compay must produce a high quality product that meets exactig specificatios. This is ot the first time the military has asked the compay to provide materials for a project that was vital to our atioal security.
