LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Let s keep itegrity i our electios To the Editor: The itegrity of our electios rests with the Secretary of State. For the first time i New Hampshire history, the pervasive ifluece of moey is threateig the itegrity of the Secretary of State s electio. Special iterests with clever ames like NH Forward ad Free ad Fair NH are pollutig the electio process. The Democrat party wats Bill Garder a Democrat out of office. Why? Two reasos. First, because he dared to participate i the Presidet s voter fraud commissio, refusig to kowtow to Democrats who opposed it. Ad secod, because he has scrupulously followed our ever-chagig electio laws ad has doe so without ay partisa bias. Eter Democrat aveger Coli va Oster, who has raised over a quarter of a millio dollars to buy the office of Secretary of State. Partisa moey out-of-state moey, ad lots of it is beig used to campaig for the office resposible for the itegrity of our electios. Cotrol the office, ad you cotrol the process. Puttig a uabashed partisa waabe ito the Secretary of State s office will eable Democrats to do just that. It will tur a scrupulously o-partisa positio ito a political cotest. Let s talk specifics. Va Oster claims the Secretary of State s office eeds moderizatio, yet he refuses to use the o-lie campaig fiace system to file receipt ad expediture reports. He files paper copies istead, makig it much harder to follow the moey i his campaig. Rather tha embracig moderizatio ad trasparecy by usig the state s electroic reportig system, he deliberately made it harder to lear who s really behid this shameful episode. Va Oster raised more moey i his campaig Thakful beyod words God. The God the Bible portrays as a father figure, watchig over his ow with love ad justice, is real. I have chose to respect his desig for my life ad he has bee good to me! I was give the advatage of beig reared i a Christia home. This accidet of birth gave me a healthy start i life I could have discovered i o other way. Why me? I caot justify the fact I am just thakful! This is ot to say that life has always bee a walk i the park. Like so may others, I, too, have bee to hell ad back. But, with the Psalmist, I have discovered that whe I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, behold, you are with me. Ad I am ot aloe. Most Christias will tell you that i their deepest, darkest momets, God has bee there ad he has ot bee silet. We are thakful, ad rightly so. For some of us, it is the result of beig forgive for a irresposible past or udisciplied lust or a addictio to alcohol ad drugs or a temper that is out of cotrol. Yes, we have NOVA for Secretary of State tha ay Geeral Electio cadidate for state office except the Goveror ad oe state seate cadidate. He s bee aythig but trasparet with his filigs. Required reports have bee deliberately submitted o paper to keep the cotets out of the searchable database. He chaged formats o paper filigs to make researchig his doors almost impossible. I every required filig durig his failed 2016 campaig for Goveror he listed cotributors i alphabetical order by first ame, makig it much harder to follow the moey. His filig history is aythig but trasparet. Va Oster s etire campaig is about retributio agaist Garder ad loyalty to a party that wats to cotrol the office overseeig our electios. Garder is a Democrat, ad I m a Republica. But I ve supported him for Secretary of State, sice I was a freshma State Represetative i 2001, without reservatio because his loyalty is ot to ay party or special iterest, but to the itegrity of electios ad the people of New Hampshire. Thousads of legislators have supported him for decades without the ifluece of Va Oster s moey ad party politics precisely because he has served our state with distictio ad eared the ucoditioal trust ad respect of every legislator we ve set to Cocord. Let s ot pollute the office of our Secretary of State with out-of-state special iterest moey or partisa retributio. We deserve better. Local fire departmets, such as Tilto-Northfield Fire & EMS, will be cotributig witer clothig through a Warm Coats program to the Uiteded cosequeces the Greatest Geeratio by Tom Brokaw. Those soldiers who retured from WWII created the Baby Boom geeratio that is defied from 1946 through Durig that 18 year spa, there were 78 millio people bor i this coutry. After this geeratio we have had Geeratio X ad Ge Y bledig i with the Milleials, all of whom have ot had early as may childre as that Baby Boomer geeratio. The Baby Boomers are ow retirig at the rate of 10,000 per day, drivig the ratio from 42 cotributors to oe recipiet of SS etitlemets ad Medicare/ Medicaid to oly three cotributors to oe recipiet. Withi the ext te years, the ratio will be 1 to 1. Let s estimate a idividual s aual SS ad Medicare etitlemets at age 66, which is full retiremet age curretly. Maybe $24,000 i SS ad $15,000 i Medicare, ot to metio ay additioal Veteras beefits. My high powered calculator tells me that i 10 years, every workig perso will have to support roughly $40,000 worth of etitlemets aually that we Baby Boomers are collectig. Our atioal debt is over $20 trillio, ad will accelerate expoetially i order to just service the existig debt. With iterest rates climbig, more pressure is applied o that debt repaymet. The most recet dowturs i the equity markets have bee triggered by a spike i rates. You see, the equity(stock) traders love cheap moey. I my opiio, the ext recessio will be brought o by the Federal Reserve raisig iterest rates to aggressively. We are already seeig a slowig i the housig market because of iterest rates ad the wealth effect wearig off with the stock market pull-back. David Walker, who was comptroller of the US util 2008, has stated that we must double tax rates just to stay solvet. Cuttig spedig would obviously help, but Washigto caot seem to accomplish this. Just after WWII, our highest tax rate was 94 percet; i the 1970 s, we had a top tax rate of 70 percet. I 2012, our highest rate wet from 35 to 39.5 percet; last year, the tax reform act wet ito place, creatig eve lower rates ad bigger stadard deductios. So, we are close to historic lows for our tax rates, yet we still defer taxes util a later date. Tax diversificatio is extremely importat, ad if you are ot takig advatage of some methods for payig taxes ow at these low rates for tax free moey i the future, I believe you will regret this. Other reasos youg professioals ted to move to other states are due to the lack of affordable housig, lack of job or career opportuities, little access to cultural opportuities ad etertaimet, ad the lack of public trasportatio. Whe it comes to job availability however, Stewart said they have foud there are may opportuities that people simply are t aware of ad a lack of people to fill may of those jobs. New Hampshire is the secod oldest state i the coutry, eve higher tha Florida. We eed more youg people. Right ow, there are over 20,000 ope jobs, but we have more jobs tha job seekers, he said. There was good ews though. The reasos listed by others who said they would stay i-state were the quality of the eviromet, parks ad recreatio areas, as well as the proximity to a variety of outdoor activities. Respodets also said they ejoyed the sese of commuity i their tow or eighborhood, the affordable tax rate (excludig property taxes), ad the fact that they perceive the state as a safe place to live. At the ed of the survey, it was revealed that 23-percet were completely satisfied with livig i the Graite State ad 36-percet were very satisfied. Overall, 19-percet of those surveyed said they will defiitely ot be movig, 29-percet probably wo t move out of state, but 22-percet probably will move elsewhere ad 14-percet said they will defiitely be headig to aother state. Oe other observatio that Stewart made is that this Milleial group of youg adults like to live ad work i close proximity to outdoor activities ad experieces. They re off the chart whe it comes to the eviromet. Aythig outdoorsy this group loves, he said. Mark Hayes of Highlad Moutai Bike Park, located i Northfield, took heart i this iformatio. He said his recreatio area has see up to 30,000 people visitig there each year for world class moutai bikig. With a potetial to grow eve more, ad with the atural resources it provides for hikig, sowshoeig ad other recreatioal uses, he said it s a good time to be i Northfield ad the surroudig tows. Northfield Tow Admiistrator Gle Smith is also a member of the NEDC ad agreed with Hayes. It is hard to overemphasize what Mark has doe for this commuity. We re o loger o the edge of recreatio i the Lakes Regio, we re i the middle of it, he said. 13 SPORTS November 22, 2018 B3 Three Raider coaches ear D3 hoors BY BOB MARTIN BELMONT The Belmot soccer teams were amog the best i Divisio 3 ad much of this was due to some great word o the sidelies. Belmot boys soccer coach Mike Foley ad JV coach Bill Brace, ad girls soccer coach Mark Dawalga were awarded coach of the year hoors for the secod cosecutive year. For Foley, this is his fifth overall coach of the year award ad he said it is always humblig ad surprisig. I was truly surprised ad I thought there were other coaches i the divisio who had better years, but this is a big hoor, said Foley. To see the fellow coaches feel highly of the program ad the work that we ve doe is a great thig. It was uexpected. The boys soccer team wet udefeated i the regular seaso ad just missed makig it to the fials. Belmot wet to the semifials ad lost to evetual state champio Campbell i pealty kicks after a beig scoreless i regulatio. It was a battle all seaso with Belmot ad Campbell. Earlier i the regular seaso Belmot ad Campbell tied 1-1. Foley said the team started off very slow ad were like deer caught i headlights, but from a coachig stadpoit he felt this might have bee his best game. Late i the game he chaged thigs up to give the team a little extra offesive attack to tie the game with three miutes left. As a coach, you ca truly impact a game ad this was oe of those igame decisios, said Foley. The best game played all year, he said, was agaist Prospect Moutai i the secod to last game of the seaso where the Red Raiders came away with a covicig 5-0 wi. He said the team wet i kowig they eeded to brig their A game ad they fired o all cyliders. The way we played that day is what a coach would like to mimic o a daily basis, said Foley. It was a fu game to watch. I high school sports, it helps to have a good JV coach ad this is the case with Brace i Belmot. With Belmot very seior heavy this year, the players beig groomed at the JV level will be the oes startig ad makig plays at the varsity level for years to come. Foley said havig Brace i the program has bee vital to the team s success over the past five years. The beauty of havig him i our program is that I coached both of his sos ad Bill was always aroud, said Foley. He really uderstads what we are tryig to do o a day i ad day out basis. He is great with the youg kids here. Brace said it is a hoor to be recogized by his peers i back-to-back years for his coachig. He said these type of accolades show that the program i Belmot is Kevi Archibald was amed the JV Coach of the Year for the third straight year. BOB MARTIN BOB MARTIN Mike Foley wo his secod straight Coach of the Year hoor, which was his fifth overall. cosistet ad that players are willig to work hard to improve as a group. I cotiue to work with coach Foley to brig the varsity philosophy to the JV level, said Brace. Brace said the best game of the seaso for his squad was agaist St. Thomas i the fial game. Belmot played the game with oly oe substitute ad everyoe o the team stepped up ad played well i a 3-2 victory. It really showed how much we had improved as idividuals ad more importat as a team, said Brace. Brace said his goals for ext year are to cotiue to work o fudametals ad to teach icomig freshma ad returig players what it takes to be compete at the varsity level. For the girls soccer team, Dawalga also wo his secod straight coach of the year award. He echoed the commets of Foley ad Brace, sayig it is a hoor ad also a surprise. Dawalga added that this type of coachig is what Belmot soccer is all about. These awards are team awards ad I strogly believe that, Dawalga said. It represets the quality of kids we ve bee very importat to have i our program the last couple years. The credit really goes to them. We have a lot of great coaches i D-3 so, for me, I m very hoored. The Red Raiders were the umber oe seed i the state touramet ad had a record overall. The team lost to Raymod i the quarterfials. Throughout the seaso, Belmot had to deal with adversity with key players like Katie Delisle goig dow with ijuries, ad how to switch up the lieup accordigly. This is ot always easy to do as a coach ad for the players ivolved, but he was proud of how his players respoded. A game that stads out to Dawalga is a game agaist Campbell, which followed a tough loss agaist Iter-Lakes. It was a 1-0 overtime wi with a team that was shorthaded due to sickesses ad ijuries. I thik that was a turig poit for the group, said Dawalga. It was a big turaroud. COACHES CONTINUED FROM PAGE B1 gral to the success of the volleyball program. This is the fourth award for Liverois, with his other comig i He said it is always a real hoor whe you are recogized by peers. They truly kow how hard it is to do what we do, said Liverois. Especially whe you are coachig because we are all competig for the same thig. It is a woderful hoor to be recogized. I appreciate that people have recogized the job we ve doe the past few years. Wiisquam has bee amog the top teams i Divisio 3 for may years, ad over the past two seasos the team has oly lost oe game. He said this ot oly speaks to the quality of the coachig staff, which also icludes Joatha Ledoux, but also the time ad dedicatio that the athletes costatly put i. We have had some really great players for the last ie years, Liverois said. We are over ie seasos with four titles ad two ruers up. I thik that speaks volumes to the level of players we have had, but it also speaks to the commuity. We have great parets who go out of their way to support the program ad that takes a lot of burde off the coachig staff. Liverois said the parets are the oes who get their childre to practices, brig them to camps to improve their skills, ru the sack shacks, sposor team feeds ad more. He said the success of the Wiisquam volleyball program is a complete, team effort. It is a lot of effort to orgaize these thigs, said Liverois. The parets buy i, the players buy i, the athletic director ad traiig staff do a great job ad the coaches buy i. I thik it takes all those pieces to work. Liverois said aother major key is the strog JV program, ad he felt that obody is more deservig tha Archibald for this award for the third straight seaso. Kevi goes to every oe of my practices, Liverois said, addig that Liverois ad Ledoux have bee fixtures o the team for early a decade. Typically, we practice Tuesdays ad Thursdays ad he always has the early practices. So, he does that ad stays ad does my practice with me. It is a good system ad part of why we are successful.
