This describes the aual meetig of our NCJW sectio s past presidets. It is also the occasio that iitiates the ew presidet ito the prestigious circle of wome who have give their time, eergy, wisdom ad commitmet to NCJW. Presided over by Sara Stoe ad orgaized by her ad her co-facilitators Celia Katz ad Barbara Bresler, this meetig was held recetly at Atoie s i the Proteus Room. While sixtee presidets were there physically, all the others were preset i spirit, ofte quoted ad frequetly documeted i heroic stories ad treasured remiiscig. The group i the room offered me advice that was so smart, so hoest ad so poigat that I am goig to dedicate this colum to their words of wisdom. 4 NCJW-GNO s Culture of Givig icludes ACE By Alliso Freema The Alzheimer s Care ad Erichmet (ACE) program, hosted at the New Orleas Jewish Commuity Ceter (JCC) offers a safe, carig ad familiar eviromet for participats to egage with oe aother ad ejoy creative activities icludig music programs, meal preparatio, exercise, visits from the JCC ursery school childre ad more. ACE Director Alliso Freema alog with Assistat Program Director Joaa Russo, (who co-lead the Mid Matters program as well) ad a host of itegral voluteers ad assistats create a carig, egagig ad lovig eviromet three days a week, four hours a day. I have the hoor of callig myself a active cotributor to this eviromet, both as a represetative of the New Orleas Public Library (NOPL), ad as a NCJW member; NCJW supports ACE through voluteerism ad moetarily. As a NOPL libraria, my cotributio to ACE is library outreach. I brig my job o the road, supportig NCJW ad workig with the amazig people who oversee ACE as well as meetig ad iteractig with the participats i the group. Creatig egagig ad stimulatig programs for ACE has bee challegig ad fu. Usig the library s resources, icludig diverse collectios withi the library system, ad workig with the library staff, who brig their special skills ad talets, are a big part of what makes this outreach rewardig. A few of the fu ad egagig programs I have bee ivolved i coordiatig, leadig or facilitatig are George Dasker doig his Broadway Reviews (to laughter ad cheers!), ad a sigig group from the library brigig a joyful, diverse repertoire to the group. Oe particularly successful program we did ivolved researchig each ACE participat s birthday, ad the brigig i a copy of each perso s hometow ewspaper from the day that he/she tured twety. Lookig at the headlies, the advertisemets ad the movie listigs from the time certaily brought up stories! Most recetly, local poet ad library cosultat Ae Marie Rooey ad I have begu implemetig a ogoig mothly poetry evet. We research ad choose poems aroud a theme that we the read aloud with the group. The readigs lead ito facilitated discussios which are joyful, powerful ad allow the group to discuss ideas ad memories cojured by the poetry. Sometimes the group writes their ow poem through the sharig of their words ad ideas. I additio to the dedicated staff ad iterested voluteers, the ACE participats resposes, history, kowledge ad persoalities create the robust atmosphere of the program. I bega thikig about workig with adults i geeral a few years ago. Durig this time I atteded a America Library Associatio coferece ad itetioally atteded a forum o Alzheimer s ad what role libraries could play i workig with sufferers of the illess ad their caregivers. A libraria spoke at the forum about her persoal relatioship to Alzheimer s her husbad had the disease. She talked about library strategies for isertig ourselves ito this commuity/populatio ad her words struck a chord for me. As a fairly ew NCJW board member, the discussio of ACE at our meetigs resoated with me, ad I bega to see how I could joi my work life ad voluteer life. I started ivestigatig the disease olie, becomig more iformed. I came across the Alzheimer s Poetry Project (APP) while olie, ad discovered that Natasha Trethewey (the poet laureate at the time) worked with this populatio. I, alog with NCJW member Ia Davis, worked to brig Trethewey to NOPL for a commuity program. The APP ad Tretheway s ivolvemet triggered ideas that got my ball rollig. I started visitig the ACE program at the JCC mothly, ad I ve bee doig it ow for a little over a year. I feel grateful ad eriched to be amog those who play a role i creatig a atmosphere of love, fu ad belogig, icludig Hazel Schleuter, commuity health literacy extraordiaire who plays the madoli, Loyola Music Therapy studets who lead sig-alogs, ad all of the folks who ca be foud o ay give ACE day makig music, promotig coversatio ad egagig with this group of very special people. NCJW Holds Suday Sukkot Bruch Resiliece uder the Oaks: The Past, Preset ad Future of City Park NCJW s Greater New Orleas Sectio, held its Opeig Bruch o Suday, October 4 at the home of Susa ad Bill Hess. Bob Becker, CEO of City Park, preseted the park s history, icludig its Jewish coectios, ad shared details of its reaissace sice Katria. Named recetly as oe of the Heroes of Recovery by New Orleas Magazie, Bob Becker is credited ot oly with repairig the catastrophic damage doe by Katria but also remakig it ito oe of the Top Te public parks i the coutry ow visited by about 14 millio people aually. Sice the storm, Becker has put together a public/private-fiacig pla that has raised over $122 millio. Before comig to City Park, he was the Seior Vice Presidet for the Audubo Nature Istitute ad was the Executive Director of the New Orleas City Plaig Commissio durig most of the 1980s. I Jauary 1974, the ame of the fud was chaged to hoor the memory of Irma M. Isaacso ( ), beloved Past-Presidet of the Sectio ad log-time member of the Scholarship Committee. The Irma M. Isaacso Memorial Scholarship Fud helps NCJW to cotiue its support of local Jewish studets. The Clara ad Roy Schwarz Memorial Book Fud allows NCJW to provide supplemetary fuds for the purchase of books to recipiets of the scholarship fuds. Our scholarship recipiets represet the dreams we all share of reachig goals ad creatig a better life. Sara B. Stoe Educatioal Erichmet Fud Sara Stoe, our Hoorary Scholarship Chair, tured 100 i August, I celebratio of her passio ad commitmet to the scholarship program, the Sara B. Tolmas Charitable Trust NCJW s Greater New Orleas Sectio is pleased to aouce that the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust has provided a geerous doatio to sposor our NCJW Way: Learig to Lead program. I 2013, our local sectio lauched a iovative leadership program NCJW Way: Learig to Lead. This program brigs together a cohort of wome, ew to NCJW, for a itesive year-log semiar that culmiates i a trip to a atioal NCJW meetig. The primary goal of NCJW Way is to ispire ad iform future leaders of NCJW ad the local Jewish commuity usig a multi-faceted approach that highlights educatio, service ad leadership traiig. Participats are expected to atted program sessios, a atioal leadership meetig ad other local meetigs as well as desig ad participate i a commuity service project. I additio, they commit to a two-year term of NCJW board service followig participatio i NCJW Way. The NCJW Way participats are: Ariaa Basema, Shaya Blum, Fra Diehart, Maddie Firema, Daa Kere ad Nora Udell. These wome were selected by a committee this summer ad represet a wide variety of iterests ad backgrouds (see the NCJW Way article i this editio). Madaly Schek, who iitiated the NCJW Way Program i 2013 expressed thaks to Tolmas Fud trustees Lisa Romao ad Vicet Giardia. We appreciate their thoughtful cosideratio of the commuity s eeds, their perceptive study of NCJW s projects, ad their dedicatio to preservig the memory of Oscar Tolmas. We look forward to workig together as we hoor his legacy, Schek said. Oscar Judah Tolmas was a New Orleas ative who served as a Naval Officer durig World War II. Upo discharge, he pursued several career paths, icludig law, real estate developmet ad horse racig. He served for several years o the LA State Racig Commissio ad as Chairma for four years i the early 90s. I 2013, he was hoored by the Louisiaa Bar Associatio as a 70-year member, havig graduated i 1943 from Tulae Uiversity Law School. Mr. Tolmas passed away o December 2, 2013 at the age of 93. He was preceded i death by his wife of 50 years, Marjorie Skier Tolmas, a lifelog member of NCJW. I his will ad testamet he formed the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust to help other tax exempt charities with their missios, leavig all of his estate to the trust. Girls ad the Ru (GOTR) New Orleas ad NCJW s Greater New Orleas Sectio ecourage you ot to throw them away; istead doate them ow ad help local girls ad people all over the world. Girls o the Ru New Orleas is a local oprofit which uses ruig as a platform to educate, empower ad ispire 3rd 8th grade girls i New Orleas. The program icorporates physical activity to teach very specific ad well-defied social ad persoal skills. The 10 week program culmiates i a 5K which takes place o December 5th at Audubo Park. Accordig to Jody Portoff Brauig GOTR Executive Director, the core curriculum addresses may aspects of girls developmet; their physical, emotioal, metal ad social wellbeig. Girls lear how to cofrot issues like bullyig, peer pressure, urealistic body expectatios ad egative self-talk. The lessos focus o self-discovery, team buildig ad commuity awareess which provides girls with the tools to make positive decisios ad avoid risky adolescet behaviors. This program builds a sese of competece ad cofidece that girls carry forward i everyday life, Brauig said. We evisio a world where every girl kows ad activates her limitless potetial ad is free to boldly pursue her dreams. No limits or costraits, just opportuities to be remarkable. From September to December, Girls o the Ru New Orleas ad NCJW will work together through Fuds- 2Orgs o this shoe drive. The shoes will help GOTR to subsidize program fees for girls who atted school at scholarship site such as Akili Academy or Lafayette Charter. GOTR hopes to collect eough shoes to fud 33 sites. A scholarship site is a locatio where the program is free for a majority of studets ad they are provided with free or reduced luch. Fuds2orgs is a fudraisig social eterprise helpig create sustaiable fudig ad ecoomic opportuity for both local orgaizatios ad people livig i developig atios across the globe. To sposor a ew scholarship site for a GOTR Team i New Orleas, it will take 300 bags of 25 pairs of shoes, or 7,500 pairs of shoes. Fuds2orgs will pay GOTR for each bag of shoes which will be distributed to idividuals livig i 26 developig atios aroud the world. Each perso erolled i their free microeterprise educatio program will receive 100 free pairs of shoes to give to family, frieds ad commuity members i eed. With the remaiig shoes, idividuals ca set up shoe stalls ad start earig icome. Oce their busiess is established, idividuals ca retur to the Fuds2Orgs hubs ad purchase shoes to sell at a very low cost. 10 NCJW GNO holds a seat at the board of the New Orleas Family Justice Ceter Alliace. We have bee a proud, active commuity parter sice its iceptio. There is still a lot of work to be doe to keep our wome safe; at preset, Louisiaa is still raked umber four i the coutry for female homicides accordig to a study released by the Violece Policy Ceter i September 2015 etitled, Whe Me Murder Wome. The study also otes that oe federal study o homicide amog itimate parters foud that female itimate parters are more likely to be murdered with a firearm tha with all other meas combied. This is ample evidece for the importat legislative chages made i this past sessio ad the 2014 legislative sessio, which prohibit a abuser s right to ow a gu for te years. We are makig progress. We are fortuate to have the New Orleas Family Justice as a resource for victims ad survivors i the area. Its missio is achieved via a partership of agecies dedicated to edig domestic violece, datig violece, sexual assault ad stalkig through prevetio ad coordiatig resposes by providig comprehesive survivor-cetered empowermet services. O-site services iclude the Ati-Stalkig Program, the Child Advocacy Ceter, the Childre s Bureau, the Orleas Parish District Attorey s Office, Project Safe (providig emergecy legal assistace for protective orders ad child support), Immigratio Legal Services, Tulae s Domestic Violece Cliic ad Southeast Louisiaa Legal Services. A Culture of Givig through Family Justice NCJW Supports New Orleas Family Justice Ceter with The Biggest Baby Shower Ever By Sue Jeriga I 2014 the Ceter provided services to 1,825 survivors, with a total of 10,412 service visits double the amout of service ecouters i The Crescet House, which is the emergecy shelter, served 395 survivors ad their childre ad 739 childre were provided a wide rage of services through childre s programs, for which NCJW has bee a fiacial supporter. NCJW has stepped up ad are throwig the Biggest Baby Shower i the World chaired by Missy Tarato. Zeitgeist Shows Documetary o Julius Rosewald By Sady Heller New Orleas had the opportuity to lear about the life of Julius Rosewald, the legedary head of Sears Roebuck who became oe of the major philathropists i our coutry. A prited card haded out at Zeitgeist o Oretha Haley Castle Blvd. states that Rosewald was the so of a immigrat peddler who set him to work at the age of 15, meaig he ever fiished high school. He was always coscious of his lack of formal educatio eve though he achieved huge commercial success. However, that was oly oe part of this distiguished ma. He oce said, if I could ear $15,000 I would keep oe third, ivest oe third ad give away oe third. That philosophy guided his life ad our coutry has beefitted from it. He believed i the Jewish ideal of tikku olam, repairig the world. Ispired by his Chicago rabbi, Emil Hirsch, Rosewald made a lifelog commitmet of givig to help those less fortuate. Youg Julius grew up i Sprigfield, IL. His father s store was right across the street from the statue of Abraham Licol, a figure whose ideals greatly iflueced Rosewald. Aother metor for him was Booker T. Washigto whom he met i Chicago. Through his eyes he was educated about the plight of blacks i America ad how limited their horizos were. To help these childre go to school, Rosewald built 5000 schools throughout the South so black childre could have a decet educatio. Some of those graduates of these schools, such as Julia Bod ad Maya Agelou, spoke o the film about their experieces. As a Jew, Rosewald said he idetified with the feelig that a colored perso has, as a member of a despised miority. The documetary focuses o the may ways Rosewald helped the Africa America commuity. He was also a very geerous cotributor to the Jewish commuity ad gave tremedously to the arts ad artists of these groups.
