Alexadria police help parets detect sigs of addictio Hidde i Plai View BY DONNA RHODES Fu ad games drhodes@salmopress.ews ALEXANDRIA Durig the Alexadria Church Fair last Saturday, the public was also ivited to visit a drug-awareess tet prepared by the Alexadria Police Departmet, which gave parets ad loved oes a first had look at thigs they should be o the lookout for that could idicate someoe may be caught up i the state s drug crisis. Hidde i Plai View is just what it idicates; commo items that a perso i the kow would recogize as sigs of drug use, all sittig right out i the ope. Parets tell us all the time they keep a eye o their kids, but the we walk ito their bedroom ad see all sorts of thigs they did t realize were sigs that those kids are usig drugs, said Police Chief Doald Sulliva. To brig about better awareess of these simple idicators, the departmet set up a simulated bedroom ad laid out all the items they routiely see whe they are brought ito a home. Amog the items foud o a ightstad were dirty spoos (used to cook drugs), burt pieces of alumium foil, cords used to tie off a arm for itraveous ijectios, ad eve razor blades used to prepare a powdered arcotic for use. There were also a straws, some with the eds cut to create a scoop, sterile wipes used for ijectios, a scatterig of eedle caps, ad small cotaiers like a Altoids ti box that are used to store pills. Eve somethig simple like a colorig book is used by someoe comig dow from a methamphetamie high to help keep them calm. We see a lot of that, believe it or ot, Sulliva said. Pes with o guts iside are also used as straws for drug delivery, stadard household glue is siffed, ad small digital pocket scales are used to weigh drugs. Large quatities of lolliops ca also idicate a problem. Drug users have bee kow to roll them i drugs ad suck o them to obtai their desired effects. It s ever chagig but these are the type of thigs we re fidig right ow, the chief said. I additio to the room simulatio, there was a table lied with items used to maufacture methamphetamie. Commo household items such as Sudafed (pseudoephedrie) tablets, lithium batteries, campig fuel, acetoe, alog with atifreeze ad automobile ijector cleaers are mixed i plastic bottles ad cooked to create the drug. Other commo sigs are cold packs that help separate the pseudoephedrie from cold tablets ad coffee filters they use to strai the mixture, Sulliva said. There s a whole lot of chemistry ivolved i these Oe Pot meth labs. Doa Rhodes Eight-ad-a-half year-old Rowa hosted a Game of Chace outside his dad s house i Alexadria last weeked. Collectios of Gatorade ad Powerade bottles ca also idicate a problem. They re made of a sturdier plastic tha most water or soda bottles ad therefore preferred for mixig the chemicals. The chief added that disturbig occurrece was whe he wet to two stores ad purchased all the sample igrediets for the display. Employees i both stores failed to see the coectio betwee the types of items he was purchasig ad the drug they are used to create ad therefore asked o questios. I additio to the simulatio ad displays, the departmet also had a slide show featurig umerous photos of all the drugs they have seized i the tow. This is t just a city thig. It s i quiet, rural tows like Alexadria, too. Drugs are actually 80- to 90-percet of what we do here ow. We re spedig so much time o it ad watchig families beig tor apart. Sadra Colema, BSN, RN Director Day Away A root-cause solutio to the opioid crisis To the Editor: States are critical players i prevetig prescriptio opioid overdoses. States ru prescriptio drug moitorig programs (PDMPs), public isurace programs like Medicaid, regulate cotrolled substaces, ad licese providers. Equippig states with the data resources eeded to combat opioid abuse is at the heart of this epidemic. Fudig for ehaced surveillace assists states i prevetio by providig timely data o fatal/ ofatal overdoses ad ifo o risk factors. I Fall of 2016, the $12.8 millio awarded to 12 states to track opioid-overdoses for 36 moths bega that trackig. 5 North Coutry Notebook Cougar, sturgeo, brook ad river Opiio A5 By Joh Harriga Columist O the afteroo of Thursday, July 13, Bria Motiejaitis was returig from work to his Bear Rock home i Stewartstow whe he saw a aimal stadig i the road a hudred yards or so ahead. That s way too big for a fox, he thought, ad the closer he got, the more he thought moutai lio. A half-hour later, his wife Kerry was earig home whe she ecoutered a large, cat-like aimal walkig up the road ahead. She caught up with it, pulled over, stopped ad just stared. It was oly maybe 15 feet away, she said. The aimal tured ad looked at her, walked up a old road, ad lay dow. It was without a doubt a cougar, she said, metioig i particular the log tail. It just laid there, peerig at me through the grass, she said. More or less breathless from the experiece, she burst through the door ad said to her husbad You ll ever guess what I just saw! His uhesitatig reply: A cougar. He sort of took the wid out of my sails, she said ruefully For the early part of my life, the Mohawk River was a mysterious place. First, it was the earest real river from home, although today, lookig at it through older eyes, river seems a bit of a exaggeratio. Secod, my earest avigable waterway, Beaver Brook (we built rafts to avigate it) flowed right past our back yard, dow over STRATEGIES FOR LIVING Whe God iterveed BY LARRY SCOTT As my father stepped from his secod-floor office oe morig i 1949, he could scarcely believe what he was seeig o the floor twelve feet below. Lyig face dow, bleedig from the left ear, ad ucoscious, he saw what was left of me followig a fall that came perilously close to edig my life. The stairway that led to the groud floor of our home, you see, was sided by a widig, smooth baister that o self-respectig 10-year-old could igore. The trick was to slide dow the baister ad reach the first floor i record time. This time I missed! How I survived I do ot kow but, surprisigly, my ijuries were miimal. Except for a broke boe i my shoulder ad reduced hearig i that left ear, I recovered completely withi just a few moths. Ad ow the rest of the story. My parets were missioaries i the city of Cusco, Peru, ad a week or so later my father received a letter from a lady i the Uited States whom he did ot kow. Could it be, she wrote, that you had a particularly bad day o Wedesday. As I was workig aroud my home I felt a special burde to pray for you. I stopped what I was doig, prayed for you ad your family util the burde lifted ad I write to let you kow about my experiece ad to ask how you ad your family are doig. My father wrote back ad ever heard from her agai that that was the day his family was i desperate eed of divie itervetio. I realize that to the skeptic the evet has o merit. Grat the poit but my Bible paits a surprisigly differet picture from what you might thik. There is a persoal God ad at times His love ad care come through i rather spectacular fashio. Were we special? Not at all. But God does ot care about ay of us because of who we are; He is available to each of us because He is God. You have perhaps gathered from this colum that whe I write of tough times ad sleepless ights, I kow what I am writig about. Through the years I have had to live through some of life s most difficult experieces ad were it ot for the watchful care of a lovig Heavely Father, I ca t imagie where I would be today. There have bee times, I must admit, whe it seemed God had goe AWOL ad left me to dagle i the wid. I have, more tha oce, asked myself, Where was God whe the lights wet out. But He was there, stadig i the shadows, ad evetually I have bee able to look back ad marvel at how God has iterveed i my life. I trust it is a discovery that you, too, have made. If ot, I ca assure you that He is everythig you could ever wat i a carig ad beevolet Father. God is a getlema, however, ad He will come ito your life oly by ivitatio. Your tur! 14 The Rest of the Story A14 Opioid FROM PAGE A4 dametal uderstadig is crucial to eable support at the state level for agecies to be empowered ad advocate for allocatios of those fuds. Elected officials i NH must have the wisdom to make those types of decisios, but more importatly have the experiece to ferret out where those opportuities exist or create them whe eeded. This is o time for o-the-job traiig with the problem as serious as it is i New Hampshire. Advacig promisig strategies to esure the wellbeig of our residets must iclude: Ways to use prescriptio drug moitorig programs, which are state-ru databases to track prescriptios ad improve opioid pai reliever prescribig, iform cliical practices while protectig patiets at risk. Cosider optios to reduce prescribig to risky patiets. Evaluate data ad fid ways to assess Medicaid, ad stateru plas to detect ad address iappropriate opioid pai relief prescriptios, through use of prior authorizatio, drug utilizatio review, ad patiet restrictio programs. Icrease access to abuse treatmet services, icludig Medicatio-Assisted Treatmet (MAT), for opioid addictio. Assistace at puttig effective practices to work i New Hampshire tows where drug addictio is commo. New Hampshire s legislature must work with state resources to garer available federal fudig to implemet approaches that will work for us. That s where experiece ad kowledge become critical to realizig these optios eve exist, ad the uderstad what it takes for resource allocatio to pursue them. This is aalogous to havig a modicum of actual experiece with at least kowig this is a road worth travelig. Oe eeds a basic uderstadig that opioids are actually regulated by the federal Drug Eforcemet Admiistratio, but through 50 differet state agecies makig it a logistical ightmare for the DEA. A fudametal solutio is to require labelig o idividual dosages. UPC codig, ad blister-packs simplify the matter. I lieu of loosely packig 30 or so pills i a vile, eactig federally madated packagig restrictios would allow useful data to flow ad as made referece above, to reveal the exact source of the problem, ad allow remedies to be applied by appropriate persoel be they the 50 state pharmaceutical regulators, cliical providers or eve law eforcemet whe executig a drug bust. New Hampshire could lead the atio by madatig such a law. Will ways be foud aroud this? Sure. But gettig it uder cotrol requires a first step. Ad fidig the first step requires a uderstadig. Uderstadig comes with wisdom ad experiece. Makig state-level policies that ehace prescriptio drug moitorig programs (PD- MPs) or regulate pai cliics have show some promisig results. Here s some evidece that eve simple moitorig works ad the states where it s made a differece. Florida took a 2010 actio to regulate pai cliics ad stopped health care providers from dispesig prescriptio opioid pai relievers from their offices, i combiatio with establishig a PDMP. By 2012, the state trackig this data -- saw more tha 50% decrease i oxycodoe overdose deaths. These chages might represet the first documeted substatial declie i drug overdose mortality i ay state durig the previous te years. But agai, you must uderstad the problem to kow eough to legislate such a solutio. New York proved to have aother good approach whe i 2012 it required prescribers to check the state s PDMP before prescribig opioids. Withi a year it saw a 75% drop i patiets seeig multiple prescribers for the same drugs. More proof from Teessee who took similar steps to require prescribers to check the state s PDMP before prescribig paikillers. They saw a 36% declie i patiets seeig multiple prescribers for the same drugs. I m willig to devote my time to refie a effort like this o your behalf, but I eed to get to Cocord to do so. Ad that requires your vote for me o Tuesday, Sept the day after Labor Day -- to begi that work ad the agai i November 2018 to cotiue it. This is o small task, ad oe must at least be able to articulate the problem ad uderstad its root-cause. I seek your vote to cotiue my 10-year bi-partisa efforts ad experiece o your School Board as your ew, full-time state represetative to fid more creative solutios to may more of the challeges facig our state as well. Please vote for me o Tuesday, Sept. 5. Respectfully, Vicet Paul Migliore Cadidate for State Represetative Bridgewater Brewster Academy ivites the public to come ad lear from cyber security expert Art Coviello, former presidet ad CEO of RSA Security, ad Dartmouth College Associate Provost Dr. Eric Fossum, developer of the CMOS image sesor.
