1 August 2017 SFX Knights Newsletter St. Francis Xavier the Missionary Council # In Service to One, In Service to All Council Meetings held at St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday 7:00 P.M Newtowne Neck Road, Compton, MD August 2017 My Brother Knights, Grand Knight s Report Sometimes we do things to help people directly; sometimes we do things that will help people down the road. We are in the middle of our car-raffle efforts the money we raise through the hours spent selling tickets will help our community down the road. So far we are doing well thanks to the efforts of George Morgan and our brother Knights that sell tickets at Ace Hardware and after church. Please, if you can spare an hour or two, call George and offer up a stint at Ace selling tickets. Every little bit helps. August is a big month for us: we will continue selling raffle tickets, we have our fishing tournament coming up, and our biggest event is the annual Golf Tournament. Take your kids to the fishing tournament; it really is lots of fun. And if you can spare the time come out to the golf tournament: play in it if you are a duffer (or better), or come and help Tom Koviak and the rest of us around the course. In either case it s a few hours spent out of the house!!!

2 We wish a happy birthday to Clarence Goddard, Kevin Thompson, and William Bailey. Amazingly, Big Jim Berned, Don McLeod and Tommy Howe will, once again, reach the ripe old age of 59. And we should especially remember that August 12 th is Venerable Michael McGivney s Birthday. Brothers, you are a hard working group, thanks for all you do! Vivat Jesus SK Mike Holton, Grand Knight Council #10957 From the Pastors Desk Chaplain s Report In the middle of summer, on August 15th we will celebrate a great teaching or dogma of the Church: the Assumption of our Blessed Mother into Heaven. It has been a longstanding belief of the Church, in fact since the fifth century, that Mary did not undergo bodily corruption when she died, that she fell asleep and was taken up to Heaven by God. At that time, this feast was known as the Dormitio, which is Latin for "sleep." This solemn feast reminds us of our destiny, our goal, which is Heaven. Forty days after Jesus rose from the dead, he ascended into Heaven. Ascension denotes an active going up. Assumption denotes a passive going up, which requires a power other than oneself. That power refers to God. Mary was assumed into heaven, we too will follow her so long as we remain faithful to God.

May God bless you on this solemn feast of Mary, and may we always look up to her not only as our Mother but also as the first and model disciple whom we should emulate. St.

4 Father Andrew White Assembly #377 Faithful Navigators Message (In Service to our Clergy and Veterans) My Brother Knights, I was greatly disappointed at the turn out for my investiture. I realize that there was another event for color corps. Justin was there as Color Corps, our only Red Cape, Thank you Justin. As your new Fearless Leader, I just have a few things to say. #1 Goal for this Year is Prayer! PRAYER is our sword. I feel that it is getting dull. Complacency is taking over. The Sign of the Cross and the Hail Mary are not races to be won, there is no prize for finishing 1st. When we say: In the name of the Father. Just meditate on what you are saying. You are doing something in his Holy Name, The Great "I AM", and "His Son" also, and THE HOLY SPIRIT. Think of their awesome Power. They should be prayed to reverently. Try to visualize The Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and the Blessed Mother when you are praying to them. If you were standing in front of them, I doubt if anyone would speedily talk to them then rush off to do something they thought was more important. Let us humble ourselves before the Lord our God, asking thru Christ for the forgiveness of our sins, thanking Him for his past Blessings, and imploring their continuance upon our cause and upon all his people, knowing that intercessory prayer is our mightiest weapon (our sword) and the supreme call of Christians today. I humbly urge that you take time to pray- To Really Pray-. Let there be prayer at sunup, at noon day, at sundown, at midnight,- all thru the day. Let us pray for our children, grandchildren, our youth, our aged, our Priests, our homes, for the Knights of Columbus, and all our Churches. Let us pray for ourselves, that we may not lose the word 'concern' out of our Christian vocabulary. Let us pray for our Nation. Let us pray for those who have never known Jesus Christ and his redeeming Love, for moral forces everywhere, for our national leaders. Let prayer be our passion. Let prayer be our practice. PS This is only goal # 1; Goals 2 and 3 to follow

The first is by expanding and enhancing your council and charitable events. The more visible your events, the more enjoyable your events, the more individuals will want to be part of them. Second is by bringing in new members who bring with them new ideas. And third, is by reengaging with the missing members. Reach out to the gentlemen you recruited over the past years and see how they are their family are doing. Extend the fraternal welcome and see what happens. If you are one of the missing council members, comeback to see what and who is new. It is in giving that we receive. October will be here before you know it. Start making plans to attend the premier social event of the year for the Knights of Columbus, the Columbus Day Ball. You may even hear your name called as the winner of a new Ford Mustang. Talk it up in your council and get your reservation in before 1 Sept. (contact Alex Simpson at Lsmft90@gmail.com, check the state website for details). My wife and I invite you to join us for an evening of dining and dancing.
