2 Page 2 THE W ORD Volum e 48 Issue 5 Reverend Catherine Clayton October 16, 1953 April 23, 2017 Pastor Cathy came to Westville about 3 years ago to become the new minister for Westville United Methodist church. She brought with her her southern charm, her gentle soul, her compassionate nature, and her unbelievable excitement for serving the Lord. From NASA to Westville. From rocket scientist to pastor. An unusual journey. Cathy, however, loved to share her experience of receiving the call from God to quit her job at NASA and begin her studies to become a minister. She had already become deeply informed and educated in the heavens of outer space. It was now time for her to change her focus and become personally educated in the Heaven of eternity. This was the epitome of higher education and she answered this call with some worries and challenges but her enthusiasm and faith overcame those concerns and led her here. The journey of her calling filled her heart with joy and purpose because her greatest pleasure in life was serving her Lord and following His will. We will miss Cathy deeply but celebrate with overwhelming joy knowing she is singing and dancing with the angels and smiling in amazement at being in the presence of her Savior. She was always delicate in body and stature but she was a warrior in heart and spirit. As a church we pray that our lives will be a blessed reflection of the powerful and mighty love of God that Cathy so diligently and joyously taught us about each week. It is with solid affirmation that we know with whom she will share eternity. Written by Jan Buchanan

Please drop off donations of the above mentioned items at the Legion. For those receiving donations, items may be picked up at the American Legion on Thursdays from 4:30 5:30. IMPORTANT REMINDER INFORMATION FOR THE WORD IS DUE BY MAY 20TH IN ORDER TO BE READY FOR PUBLI- CATION BY MAY 25TH AT THE LATEST. IT CAN BE ED TO SHEILA MCCAUGHEY. OR LEFT WITH THE CHURCH SECRETARY. Family Life Center is available for rental for parties and celebrations. 6 Page 6 THE W ORD Volum e 48 Issue 4 Scholarships SPRING HAS SPRUNG! When you are planting your gardens this spring, please consider planting some extra to share with the CARE AND SHARE FREE FARMERS MARKET. Spread the word to those you know who garden, so that we have LOTS to share with others. It is that time of year where we will be awarding one of our graduating Seniors with a scholarship. The applications can be picked up in the church office or from Kathie Long. The deadline date for them to be turned in is May 21 st. This is always an exciting opportunity for our church to become invested in the future of one of our own young adults. Anyone interested in making a donation to our scholarship fund can do so by putting a contribution in the offering plate during the next few weeks or by dropping it off during church hours. Vacation Bible School 2017 This Is My Father's World When: July 24th (5:30-7:30pm), July 25th (5:30-7:30pm), and July 26th (5:30-8:00pm) Where: Westville United Methodist Church Family Life Center 154 West Main St. Westville, IN Ages: Entering Preschool - Entering 7th grade Highlights: Water Balloons, Live Animals, Games, Crafts, Snacks, Music, and more! Items to Remember: We will be collecting items for the Food Pantry every day. We are hoping for non-food items that cannot be bought with donations. These include: toilet paper, toothpaste, tissues, soap, shampoo, and conditioner. This will also be a Boys vs. Girls Competition, and the winners will be announced Wednesday evening. Tuesday will include some water themed activities, and we ask that children come in clothes that can get wet. Wednesday will be animal themed, and we will allow the kids to share pictures of current or previous pets. Feel free to send 1 or 2 pictures on that day, and please write first and last names on the backs of the pictures.

7 Page 7 THE W ORD Volum e 48 Issue 4 From Staff Pastor Parish: We thank the congregation for the outpouring of love and support for Pastor Cathy and her family this past week. We were blessed by Greg Mc Cuen who was a comforting presence providing prayer and calming reassurances at the podium and the choir s beautiful song, I ll Fly Away! on that very sad Sunday morning when Pastor passed. This has been and is a difficult time, but we've been truly blessed by coming together to pray, visit, support, and donate food for the Clayton family and dinner. The funeral service was a blessing to all and a wonderful, spiritual tribute to our dear Pastor Cathy, who was our Sister, Grandmother, Daughter, Mother, Friend. We will miss her, and we will continue to love her and keep the faith that she so joyfully shared with us. We will continue to support the Clayton family. especially David, who will be staying in the parsonage until he moves to Valparaiso in June. An interim pastor is to be appointed until a new pastor is assigned in June. Thank you to Chesterton United Methodist Church who helped with the funeral dinner and Pastor Ray Music, who has been serving until the interim pastor is appointed. Also a special thank you to Jane, who kept things together in the midst of chaos. We celebrate that Pastor Cathy s last service with us was Easter Sunday when she baptized two babies. Baptism and Easter -new beginnings, the promise of eternal life, the most Holy Day in the church, and the sacrament that Pastor Cathy treasured the most.

9 Page 9 THE W ORD Volum e 48 Issue 5 Pastor Cathy We Love You!!! I am saddened by the news. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Dr. Anne Christo-Baker So sorry to hear about the passing of Rev. Clayton. Her family & the church will be in our prayers. Porter UMC From Amanda: Pastor Cathy was there for me when I was suffering, and she helped me learn to be grateful to God every day for everything I've been given. I will always remember the prayer walks Cathy and I took. We walked the whole town together and even drove some of the county roads in the township on the rainy days. Cathy Jo Some of you may or may not remember me, but many of you played a part in deepening my faith in Christ. We spent a lot of good times together especially in adult Sunday School. It was with sadness and shock that we learned of the passing of your beloved Pastor Cathy. Please accept my sincere condolence. May God's grace and peace guard your hearts and minds during this time of grieving. Be encouraged. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning" (Psalm 30:5). Paul Lawson Cathy saw some things that reminded her of God Everyday. Because she looked for something everyday. A Lesson for us all Greg McCuen A very down to Earth, caring friend for an ex rocket-scientist. She will be missed by many. Marian MCuen "the phrase she taught us to say, 'thank you jesus', will always be remembered" -Evert White II Pastor Cathy: She had a fragile body and a Warrior Spirit! Loved Nature, Cared/ Loved All. She loved having lunch, going to movies, going to the beach and walking in the woods. My office is very empty! From Peggy: Pastor Cathy was a gentle warrior. Pastor Cathy was my friend, as well as my pastor. I will never forget her joy at floating on an air mattress with me in Lake Michigan. She d never floated on an air mattress before and was so delighted. She loved walking in Bluhm s Woods in the spring, when the floor of the woods turns into a carpet of purple, pink, and white flowers. I will never walk in that woods without remembering her love for God and her praise of God s beautiful creation! -Kathie Long
