2 Page 2 THE W ORD Volum e 47 Issue 10 October we think of colorful leaves, hot apple cider, doughnuts and Halloween. November, however, seems to be the month between Halloween and Christmas. November is when the leaves are falling. November is the month of raking, preparing for winter, and planning Christmas. November is the month when the sky is gray, the rain is cold and we start thinking about just when are going start getting snow. But, November also has thanksgiving. We almost forget about Thanksgiving. We are too busy. If we do think about it, we are thinking about what we are going to eat and with whom. Often I have wondered why we have Thanksgiving in November. This is not a month when one is naturally led to thankfulness. We have to work at it in November. The leaves are gone or at least off the trees and we are dealing with raking or other forms of leaf removal. The weather is blah. The harvest is completed. We have not had fresh veggies for a while. Why is Thanksgiving in November? Maybe we have Thanksgiving in November for the very reason that it is harder to be thankful this time of year. Perhaps because when we need God the most, is when we find it the hardest to be thankful. Yet, when we are thankful, we enter through God s gates. May we take time each day this month to thank God. Take time to truly look at your circumstances and see how God has blest you. Make the entire month of November be the month of thanksgiving. If we can find many things to be thankful for in November, imagine how our hearts will be filled with God s joy the other 11 months of the year. It may be difficult to find things to be thankful for when it is cold, gray, and rainy. But we can still find God, just look. May your November be filled with peace, joy, and many blessings. Please drop off donations of the above mentioned items at the Legion. For those receiving donations, items may be picked up at the American Legion on Thursdays from 4:30 5:30. IMPORTANT REMINDER INFORMATION FOR THE WORD IS DUE BY NOVEMBER 20TH IN ORDER TO BE READY FOR PUBLICATION BY NOVEMBER 25TH AT THE LATEST. IT CAN BE ED TO SHEILA MCCAUGHEY AT jaybirds@csinet.net. 6 Page 6 Once a Month Craft Project: Our first monthly craft project took place on Tuesday, October 11th. Mary Howard began by sharing information about project plans for the next several months. Sheila McCaughey shared information about different ways to make jewelry. Twelve ladies attended and enjoyed making bracelets of various designs. Refreshments were provided. This month s meeting will be Tues. November 8th at 4:30 pm in the Family Life Center. We will be decorating plaques with a fall theme probably a different design on each side. All ladies are welcome. If you have a friend or neighbor who would enjoy an evening out making something new and visiting with a group of friendly ladies you are most welcome. There is no charge at this time, but if at some time funding is no longer available there may be a modest charge for the project. Resale Shop News Have you seen the jewelry section at the Resale Shop? Looks so good! With donated jewelry forms we have been able to expand the jewelry department. It s getting a lot of attention, and being right up front, it is truly front and center making a nice entrance for the rest of the shop. We have a new member to our team. Jill Carden will be replacing Bob McCaughey on the 4 th Tuesday of the month. Our seasonal flip is over and we await those crisp autumn days. Leaves twirling down like snowflakes wait a minute did I just say snowflakes? Yes, the seasonal flip is done and the team leaders are thinking Christmas. We need your input. For the past few years we have not put any Christmas out until the day after Thanksgiving. We work a few days prior to Thanksgiving then open on Black Friday which we call Thankful Friday with special sales, treats and giveaways. We are wondering how this idea is working for the team. Should we do it again this year or put Christmas out early like all the other stores? Waiting for Thankful Friday does not seem to hurt our sales. If we continue with Thankful Friday we will again close the store that week to set up and will need lots of elves. So please let one of the team leaders know your ideas regarding Thankful Friday and if you can help anytime during the week of November 21 probably from around 9-4 to turn the shop into a Christmas treat for our community to enjoy on November 25th. 7 Page 7 FRIDAY NIGHT FISH FRIES Fish Fries have begun and continue Friday Evenings through November 18th We need your help: setting up, prepping, putting meals together in the kitchen, serving meals to our guest, making pies, taking money/selling tickets, kitchen washing dishes and then the clean up. The money from the Fish Fries pays the mortgage on the Family Life Center for the YEAR! Please consider finding a way you can help. Sign up sheets are in the hall between the Sanctuary and the Family Life Center Oct 26, 2016 Trustee Meeting Ken, Stephan, Richard, Jane, Pastor were present We opened with prayer for guidance. Stephan is working on sound system upgrade, which would include devices for those who have trouble hearing. Cushions for the pews: We are working with a couple Upholstery companies. We are in process of ordering new cushions using Capital Funds Designated money. Items that need attention: water drip in kitchen, office outside light is broken, lawn mower was looked at by Frank Long and suggestions were given to make it work better, adding an outlet in the hall by the bathrooms in the Family Life Center, tree trimming at parsonage and broken branch in the back yard, cleaning of gutters at the parsonage, sign in from of church needs replacing must rust and damage to the sign, Plexiglas on the stain glass window is broken and in process of being repaired. 8 Page 8 Service Time Change during Advent Nov 27th through January 1st. We will have a combined Service at 10am each Sunday during Advent and through January 1st. Sunday School will meet at 9 am except for December 25th There will be a special Service December 25th Christmas Carol singing The whole community is invited to celebrate the birth of Jesus!! Church Council Oct 13, 16 Lion s Club is sponsoring a Senior Citizen s Thanksgiving Dinner November 12 th; 4-6pm Family Life Center, 154 W Main Street Members present: Pastor Cathy, Phil Koss, Jan Buchanan, Jane Bachman, Kathie Long, and Associate District Superintendent Paul Arnold Jan explained our church financial needs. Arnold We give out of Thanksgiving, we don t give out of guilt: People respond to an emphasis on giving is a part of their life, allowing ourselves to do ministry. Pastor Cathy s evaluation needs to be done by the end of November. We may do it at the next meeting. We have two church positions that should be filled: member at large for the church council and Hospitality. We will recognize All Saints Day the first Sunday in November Pastor Cathy will have foot surgery Dec. 7 th. We will have guest speakers for a couple of weeks. We discussed having a few combined services. December 11 th is the Choirs Cantata. We also have money to spend in the missions account. We did agree to help the Men s Shelter in Michigan City by providing Soup at lead once a month. The meeting adjourned at 8:40pm Jane Bachman
