1 November 2016 Greetings from the President Like the Pharrell Williams song goes, I m happy, happy,.! Happy Autumn everyone! I am also happy to report that our Membership Drive has been very successful! We have about 16 new members, and renewals are still coming in. The Queens Landing Dinner Cruise for Two Raffle was won by member Joy Sigmon. Congratulations Joy ( who never wins anything ) Sigmon! Let s thank the Door Prize and Raffle donors: Authors Dr. Tony Abbott and Elizabeth Michels, Boss Hog BBQ, Butcher Boys, Ellen Dewey of TopStitch Designs, First Impressions Hair Salon, Gold Mine General Store and Grill, Highway Tire Auto and Lube, Joanie Gardner of Newport Properties, Midway Boathouse Grill, Timber Creek Mulch, Whispering Winds Farm, and Queens Landing. I m also happy to announce that on Monday, November 14, at 6:30 pm, Friends of the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Library will partner with the Historical Association of Catawba County to sponsor a special viewing of the documentary Miracle by Professor Richard Eller. Professor Eller, Historian in Residence at the Historical Association, and Dr. Amber Clawson, Director of the Historical Association, will present the program about the creation of the polio hospital in 1944 and answer your questions after we view the film. Details follow. All programs are free and open to the public, so spread the word! Feel free to use the wording here for placement in church and organization bulletins. Stop by the Library desk for card stock flyers and bookmarks for posting about town, or print the attachment to this . Light refreshments will be served. At our October meeting, Flo Hollands happily announced that our second American Girl Doll Kit has been donated to the county library system and is currently being catalogued. Melody Ellison will join our first AGD Kit in residence at our SFT Library. Doesn t this make you happy? Details about our February Music Variety Show follow. If you know an amateur instrumentalist or singer or group who would like a chance to perform in public, please let us know or give them the form. This is not a competition, but an opportunity to perform for a very supportive public audience. Our Christmas Wreath Fundraiser has begun! Help us continue and expand our cultural and literacy based programs and projects at the Library. Details follow. 3 SFTFOL Donates Second American Girl Doll Kit Meet Melody Ellison, a child of Detroit in the sixties: Today, I will lift my voice and sing out. Fairness and equality for all people sound like music to my ears. More than ever, I need to lend my support at home, at church, and around my neighborhood. It ll take courage, but adding my voice to others can really make a difference. This American Girl Doll Kit reaches out on several levels: on the African-American experience of the 1960s; on aspects of American history (like the political and social upheavals of that time) that are often overlooked because they are uncomfortable; and on the advances and improvements that have resulted. The Sixties were indeed all shook up, and a few of us still remember pill-box hats and mini-skirts and paper dresses and go-go boots. December 13, Tuesday, at 6:30 pm SFTFOL Holiday Social FINAL FUNDRAISER OF THE SEASON Yes, it s that time of the year! (Well, almost ) and the SFTFOL are again offering beautiful, fragrant, Fraser-fir Christmas Wreaths. This once-a-year project raises funds to support our many educational and support programs. Members have order forms, and orders will be accepted through November 15th for a November 29th delivery date (weather permitting). Sizes and suggested donations are 24 - $20; 28 - $25; 32 - $30. ALL sizes come with attached red velvet bows. Volunteers will be meeting at the library to make bows on November 14th and 21st between 1:00 and 3:00 pm. Come join us! 6 COMMUNITY EVENTS Solar Power for your Home?, by Keith Westphal, Director of Marketing & Sales for Power Home Systems will be the presentation at the November 15 th meeting of the PROBUS Club of Lake Norman. Mr. Westpahal will discuss the current status of the solar power options for home and business applications. Keith will review technical strides and tax issues in the industry to improve efficiency and competitiveness with traditional forms of home power. All are welcome to attend this free presentation at the PROBUS Club on November 15th, held at the Berea Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Hwy 150, Mooresville, just west of Perth Road. Coffee and fellowship begin at 10 a.m. The hour-long program will begin at 10:30.
