1 New Outlook October 2018 Second Baptist Church Open and progressive since 1833 Pet Blessing October 6 In honor of St. Francis Day, and as an act of love for our pet companions, Second Baptist Church will once again host a Pet Blessing Service. The date is Saturday, October 6, and we will meet at 1:00. The service will be short, and following the service, the youth would be thrilled to give your pet a bath (no alligators please). The baths will be free, but donations are certainly appreciated. You are invited to bring your pets dogs, cats, guinea pigs, bunnies, turtles, lizards, etc. for this wonderful time of blessing. Second Baptist Talent Show and Chili Cookoff November 3 Come share your talents at the annual Second Baptist Talent Show/Chili Cookoff on Saturday, November 3. Anyone of any age is welcome to perform. Just let Linda Marks know what you d like to do in the show or sign up at the Welcome Center. We re hoping to have singers, dancers, instrumentalists, poets, comedians, actors the sky s the limit. Linda Marks and Darryl Briscoe sing We re a Couple of Swells in last year s talent show Also, you ll have a chance to sample chili made by some of Second Baptist s terrific cooks and vote on which one you like the best. If you d like to enter the chili cookoff contest, let Linda Marks know. The winner will receive a special prize. The cost to attend the Talent Show/Chili Cookoff is $9 per adult and $25 per family. All of the money collected will go to the youth for Green Lake and other activities.

2 Trunk or Treat Second Baptist Church will host Trunk or Treat again this year, on Sunday, October 28, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. You are invited to join the fun by bringing your car to the upper parking lot around 3:30 and decorating your trunk for Halloween. Costumes are encouraged. Children from all over the area come to our church and go from car to car to pick up treats. We don t have a count from last year, but in 2016 we had over 100 children and at least 50 adults. Our youth will be selling hot dogs and hot chocolate as a fundraiser for Green Lake and other activities they re planning. We need at least 9 cars. If you d like to participate, please sign up at the Welcome Center. And we need candy! Lots of it! If you can bring some, please put it in the marked container in the narthex. 6 From our pastor... Hey Friends, October is here! Autumn is in the air. October is such a great month. There are so many wonderful things about this time of year. This is a short list of things I dig about October. October is the beginning of sweatshirt weather. The days get cooler and a sweatshirt is perfect for staving off the chilly air. Once the sweatshirts come out, it is hard to put them away come springtime. As it gets cooler outside, we turn off the air conditioner and open the windows. The cool air and the wonderful smells of fall fill the house. October is the month we do outside fires at our house. Our fire pit provides the perfect spot to chill, to listen to music, to work on the ipad, to hang out. And the bonus, of course, is the wonderful smell of wood smoke and the taste of s mores. October is baseball playoff month. As a lifelong Cubs fan, I have spent most Octobers rooting for other teams still in the playoffs. But still, playoff baseball is the best. October is the month we celebrate pets. St. Francis Day is October 4, and in honor of St. Francis love for animals, we will hold our annual Pet Blessing day on Saturday, October 6 at 1:00. October is change of color month. As tree leaves change color before dropping, hillsides and valleys come alive with colors reds and yellows and oranges, and browns. Even the drive down the little hill to our house is more beautiful as gum and maple and oak trees transform before us. In October, the sky grows dark earlier each evening. I know a lot of people get annoyed with early sunsets, but I enjoy the dark. October is our oldest son s birthday. Birthdays serve not only as celebrations, but as memory points. October is Halloween. I know lots of churches eschew this holiday, but I love it. Costumes, kids ringing the doorbell, a stash of Kit Kats, carving pumpkins, spooky music. What s not to love. Second Baptist will host Trunk or Treat again this year on Sunday, October 28 from 4:00-6:00. Finally, in October God is God. God loves us and cares for us during this wonderful month. God s grace envelopes us and God s mercy overshadows us during October. Of course, God is God in every month, but it is good to be reminded of the reality of God s love. Happy October!
