GOVERNMENT, A PROTECTOR OR A TYRANT Taxe? ex.-t because t s necessary to mantan government. f we admt the necessty and usefulness of havng a government, then we must also admt that t s our duty tc mantan our government. Taxaton s the ndspensble means' of supportng government. Government, generally speakng, earns no ncome. Somebody has produced or saved every pen- j ny that goes nto the coffers of publc revenue. As a government may requston the lves of ts ctzens, so too t can requston ther fortunes for the publc servce.' Taxes can only be justfed when they are leved for useful and necessary objects of government, and appled economcal- ly and wsely to such purposes. Unless these condtons are fulflled, taxaton degrades nto a state of vrtual robbery un- j der the guse of law. "The power to tax s the power to destroy," and as such t s one of the most pervadng powers of the government, be- j cause t reaches all classes of people. Our only safeguard a- ganst the abuse of ths power les n the structure of our government. Presdent Cooldge has sad: "A government whch lay? taxes on people not requred by urgent necessty and cound publc polcy s not a protector of lberty, but an nstrument of tyranny." Government must not forget that the people hae a rght to ther property and to the money whch they save. The Tax Dgest. CONCENTRATE ON CRMNALS Do consttutonal rghts mean anythng to- our people? The way proposals are made to do away wth these rghts, one would be nclned to say, no. But the way the average ctzen out over the country quetly sets hs foot down on measures whch would destroy the treasurer rghts and prvleges gven hm n state and federal consttutons, shows that he does apprecate such protecton.! Consttuton tnkerers and would-be savors of the people always lke to belttle the old-fashoned Amercan ctzen. They would make hm appear rdculous and out of step wth the tmes. We see ths on every hand. But always n "savng the people," agtators would destroy ndvdual rghts and lbertes of the people. Nowhere s ths beng wtnessed more clearly than n attempts to pass ant-pstol legslaton, The crmnal s protected, and the law-abdng ctzen who would lke to own a gun s ponted as dsreputable. Fgures have recently been quoted to show that 882 persons were klled n New York Cty from 98 to 926 nclusve, and that only eght were shot by persons defendng ther own lves. Ths s used as an argument to show that prvate ctzens co not need guns and should be prohbted from havng them. Would ths reduce crme? f a few more New Yorkers carred a good old-fashoned sx-shooter n an open holster, t mght do more to prevent murder n ctes lke New York, than laws whch pamper th< crmnal and whch are contrary to the. Unted States Son sttuton. Why so much tme s wabted n sympathy for the crmnal and so lttle tme spent upholdng the rghts of the law-abdng ctzen, s hard to understand. Concentrate on the crm ".als nstead of onllo.o, peaceful ctzens. WHAT MAKES THE HOME POSSBLE? To create a true home, however modest, requres many thngs n combnaton, but wthout nsurance protecton no m^ would be possble to the average stzer. To begn wth, ts cost would be almost prohbtve. Buldng materals, f those who deal n them had n ofre nsurance, would ultmately soar n prce. From the frst breakng of ground t othe drvng of the fnal nal, the savngs of the owner mght be wped out n < few mnutes by fre. After the home, whch possbly rep lesented the savngs of a lfetme, was fffshed and occuped there would be the ever present rsk of complete destructon by fre. Even f tho owner wshed to assume ths rsk, t s generally necessary to borrow some money for home buldng purposes, and the agences wth money to loan would not accept such a rsk except at an exorbtant rate, wthout nsurance protecton. W\h adequate nsurance, the world looks upon money nvested n a home as a tangble asset. Amerca has been jcalled "the land of home owners". Add the fact that Amerca s the best "nsured" country n the world, and the lnk between the two becomes apparent.
