BULD AND LET BULD Aa far back as hstory begns, there have been persons who have atodd n the way of progress, Bome for reasons mercenary, others because of a real lack of vson or natural narrow tendences. * t s a matter of record that the bulders of the ancent cttes and publc monuments, some of whch stll exst were met by hundreds of obstacles placed n ther way by vsonless men, who dd not have the future nterests of ther communtes 'and the world at heart. Ths same condton may be appled to our own communty today. We see opposton to thngs whch would expedte busness or cause an economc mprovement or would n humanty's sake afrord protecton aganst sckness or the kllng of hundreds of motorsts or pedestrans. Here there should be no room for the obstructonst. Carteret s buldng pajres of hstory and there should be nothng at ths tme to hamper Ha progress. ' > The truly great man of all tme s the bulder, the one who SfMroduoee or helpb to produce. The paraste, who does nothng for hnself or fellow man s t a cheat and the one who n-! terferes wth progress; s lttle better. "Buld and let buld" should be our motto and the future wll comfortably arrange taelf. There are many thngs to be consdered n the buldng up of a communty. Ten man can do more than' one and wfen these ten men are arranged n team formaton, ther work can not only count much more than 0 tmes but, n fact, 20 tmes as much. 4. THE CRME OF CRMES Amercans usually take the sde of the weaker. Ths characterstc shows tself n sports, n busness and n everyday lfe generally. t s a natonal trat of good sportsmanshp. Unfortunately, however, t sometmes «ts warped; t sometmes creeps n where crme s concerned. Ths atttude may be responsble n a measure for the publc's ndfference toward arson and ncendarsm n the past. Yet there s proof that ths atttude s changng. "There never was a tme," asserts The Natonal Board of Fre Underwrters, "when the man who started a fre for gan to hmself had less publc encouragement. The publc s makng tself felt n the number of successful prosecutons n arson castes." For the man who n the heat of anger, or n dre necessty, commts a crme some sympathy may be felt. Hs deed may be eternally wrong and yet be tnged wth an element of pty. But no excuse whatever can be offered, no prson term can be too long, for the man who n cold blood apples the torch to serve hs own greedy ends. To destroy Amercan property whch n many cases can never be replaced, to endanger lfe, to Strke at the economc welfare of the country all ths the arsonst does. Ard why? Merely to beneft hmself or another through the collecton of nsurance. Hence t s that we say to The Natonal Board of Fre Underwrters, to the Fre Marshals of Amerca, to evefry force engaged n fghtng the scourge of arson: "Go on; follow every avenue that may lead to mproved condtons, to more v certan retrbuton." Vast as s Amerca, there s no room here for the arsonst, for the perpetrator of the crme of crmes. f: NO MORE "DULL" SEASONS Once an ngenous merchant dscovered that the logcal tme to advertse was when busness was slow and n the perodc dull seasons of the year. Rdculous as t may seem, before that dscovery the average busness man slowed down n hs advertsng when busness slowed down. He generally ended up the dull seasons wth a quarterly sale, but as far as hs newspaper advertsng was concerned there was no advertsng when there was no busness. The modern busness man holds a dfferent concepton of ' the purposes and uses of newspaper advertsng. When busness s not up to hs satsfacton he brngs t up through adver- ' tsng so that now the merchant, schooled n productve adver- ; tsng, knows no dull seasons nor dmnshed busness. There are a few p/hases of busness whch have always : been known to all busness men. Among these are the alterf namng busyj and dull perods of the year, month, week, and.; ; day. A systematc, effectve and economc plan of advertsng ^jhad to be constructed upon a full knowledge of ^hs busness :ycle. Busness has ever come wthout coaxng before Chrst- \ mas, at Easter tme, and n the fall. Extensve advertsng has been found to be the only remedy for the busness depresson epdemc between these three rush prods. People have a habt of confnng ther shoppng to the last of the month, the last three days of the week and the later shoppng hours of : day. From experence merchants have learned that newspaper.^advertsng has successfully elmnated the rush perods and f. spread the volume of busness more evenly over the day, week, '^tnonth and year. t ha,s prevented congeston, smplfed salestejnahshp and merchandsng and ncreased busness. C SERVCE WLL SEE BUSES ARE VENTLATED, $NL -;pjthe Publc Servce has just ssued an order to all bus to see' that the buses a,re well ventlated as much as )le at all tmes and n all knds of weather. )ftentmes n the past we have seen hot, stuffjnbuses wth y every wndow closed tght. The new order r«jmres that keep all wndows open when th«> weather pergve serous attenton to ventlaton at all tmes. t tmely and much-needed order, as all bus patrona wll dependent owners operatng buses through Woodbrdge eret should take note. Already the nterference whch was experenced n some areas due td unregulated and moulded broadcastng actvtes, has been elmnated n large measure by greater separaton between broadcast frequences n congested rado dstrcts. nstead ot the entre broadcastng establshment of the naton operatng, at one tme, wth a resultant confuson comparable wth the Tower ot Babel of bblcal renown, the Federal Rado Commsson has very wsely sought to reduce the number of broadcasters operatng at one tme to proportons n keepng wth the lmted though adequate traffc facltes of our broadcastng wavelengths. They are not n error when they charge that modern men and women are choosng vocatons today n whch they can do the greatest servce to themselves. People tdday are comng to the^elef that the best way they can help others s to produce much that ther proft shall l.e large and that they shall never become dependent upon socety. The old dea of servce was drect. The new servce s ndrect. Twerty years ago t was stll thought that only mnsters, doctors and teachers served humanty. Today every workman who carres hs whole day's wage home s known to have earned that wage n servce to socety.
