2 Important Dates Pastor s Corner Rev. Samuel Loterte, SSS Religious Education Sunday, December 13 R.E. classes at the St. Joseph Jr/Sr High School No R.E. classes on Dec. 20 th, Dec. 27 th, or Jan. 3 rd. Classes will resume on Jan. 10 th Youth Mass Dates Dec. 13 & 27 11:30 am Mass St. Joseph Filipino Catholic Club Sunday, Dec. 13 Christmas Party & Installation of new officers (Jan. 16, 2010) to be discussed. SIMBANG GABI AGUINALDO EVENING MASS Everyone Welcome! Mass will begin each evening at 7:30 pm, from December 16 th continuing to the 23 rd, (EXCEPT the Mass on December 20 th, which will begin at 8:00 pm). On December 24 th mass will be held at 4:00 am. There will be light refreshments following each mass. Let us all come together as one body in Christ and prepare ourselves for a truly joyous and blessed Christmas. Parish Share Fund: Disbursement checks are sent out 6 months after a parish has finished their campaign. Of the money collected at that point, 25% will be returned to the parish. After this initial disbursement, checks will be issued quarterly to each individual parish based on the money collected in that 3-month time period. Pledge Input The bulk of the 36 Bloc II parishes have recently completed their Commitment Weekend. As a result, the With Grateful Hearts campaign office has seen a deluge of new pledges come in. In the last 6 weeks, we ve received over 4,200 new pledges. Please be patient with the campaign office as we work diligently to input all new incoming pledges. Normally all new pledges are immediately entered into our database and by week s end we are current. However, because of this inundation, we expect there to be at least a 2-3 week lag time between when a pledge is received and when the donor receives an acknowledgment statement. If you speak with a fellow parishioner who mentions they haven t yet received a statement, please explain the situation to them. Thank you for understanding! Final Thank You Since beginning the With Grateful Hearts campaign in July 2008, parish leadership, priests, and volunteers have worked hard to ensure the success of this important endeavor. Now, this historic capital campaign has come to a close for 95% of the parishes. We would for one last time like to express our gratitude for all you have done. This campaign has been a complete success, but it has not been easy. Ultimately, the success of the campaign is because of the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. MAHALO! St. Joseph and Malia Puka O Kalani Updates To date St. Joseph has received $1,166,800 and Malia has received $109,725 in pledges. Although we are formally finished with the campaign, we are still providing all our parishioners the opportunity to participate in providing our parish and diocese with additional needed funds. Also, when making pledge payments, please do so with a check made payable to the Hawaii Catholic Community Foundation. Again, we thank you for your prayers, time, effort, and treasury. 2

3 Sunday Reflection: by Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M. December 13, 2009 Third Sunday of Advent (C) Zep 3:14 18a; Is 12:2 3, 4, 5 6; Phil 4:4 7; Lk 3:10 18 A friend of mine refers to Advent as a season of "joyful expectation." Older Catholics remember this Third Sunday as "Gaudete Sunday" from the Latin word for joy. In times past, rose-colored vestments were worn in church today. Our first and second readings carry the theme of joy, but then the Gospel is all business. John the Baptist is dispensing advice to various groups who come to see him. The Gospel names two of them: tax collectors and soldiers. John advises them to carry out their daily duties with justice. I suppose that if those two professions in Jesus' time made a radical change in their way of doing business, it would be a cause for joy! Tax collectors were universally despised and soldiers represented the might of the Roman occupation. Luke wants to show us that change was in the air. The coming of Jesus would transform all of human life. That was good news indeed. What would bring us joy today? An end to terrorists' threats? Conversion in the corporate world from greed and personal gain? A new spirit of generosity and service in people's everyday lives? Paul urges the Philippians to be joyful because "God is near." That very presence of God ought to be our focus, because that would help us with the other things that need changing. "Sunday Soundbite" for St. Anthony Messenger Press, on the Web at FranciscanRadio.org. Week 3: Advent Reflections Each day during Advent find a few quiet moments with your family when you can light the candle, read the little thought for the day, and say the short prayer together. Response: Heavenly Father, we thank you for your love. Come, Lord Jesus, Come. December 13 As Moses and his people drew near to the promised land, the Lord showed it to Moses from the top of a mountain. Moses died before he came down from that mountain and so he never set foot in the promised land, although he had indeed taken his people all the way from slavery in Egypt to the very borders of where they were to settle. He had done what God had asked of him. R. December 14 The people of Israel arrived at the promised land but when they came to the city of Jericho they could not enter it because it was fortified by strong walls and the people living there would not let them in. Joshua, the new leader, told the priests to carry the ark of the covenant which contained the Ten Commandments of God at the head of a procession around the walls. They blew trumpets and all the people shouted, and the walls came tumbling down. The people of Israel entered Jericho as God had promised. R. December 15 The people divided the land amongst their twelve tribes (each tribe descended from one of Jacob's sons) and they elected kings. One of them, King Saul, was disobedient to God and God sent his prophet Samuel to name a new king. Samuel chose David, a young shepherd boy. 4 St. Joseph School Cardinal News SJHS Alumni Basketball Game In a clash of young vs. old, our basketball teams were tested during the alumni basketball game held in the school gym on Saturday, December 5. The action started at 2:30 with our girls team going up against the powerful women from SJHS past. The girls worked hard but it was the alumnae women who prevailed with a final score of Next up was our JV boys versus the older but wiser alumni men. The score was close throughout the game with the boys narrowly winning And finally it was the varsity boys turn against a team of 12 alumni men. In spite of a great effort by the mostly younger alumni, our boys handled the men with style defeating them 70-55! Mahalo to all who attended and supported this fun event! See you at the home games! Alumni players (in no particular order) include: Albert Pacheco 72; Calvin Higa 72; Kimo Alameda 87; Dusty Miranda 92; Marc Miranda 97; Danie Villena Sr.; Ivan Takamoto 95. Week 3: Advent Reflections continued from page 3 December 16 : When Saul died, David became king and ruled successfully for many years. During his time he moved his court to Jerusalem. It was here that he decided that after he died, his son, Solomon was to be king. It is believed that many of the Psalms which we read in the Old Testament are from this time. R. December 17: Solomon ruled with great wisdom and prudence. Under his leadership the people of Israel grew very prosperous and successful. Solomon built the first Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem but in spite of this, God's people became forgetful of God and all his goodness to them. R. December 18: The people of God grew self-centered and greedy. They forgot that God had promised to send them a Savior and many of them lost their faith. God sent many prophets to warn his people about the dangers of the way in which they were living. Sometimes the people took notice, but very often they ignored what the prophets said to them and continued to ignore God. R. December 19: Many, many years later, a young girl, Mary, was living in the little town of Nazareth. She was to marry Joseph a local carpenter. Both Mary and Joseph were very good people. They both listened to God and tried to do all that he asked of them. An angel came to Mary and told her that she was to give birth to a son whose name was to be Jesus. He was the Son of God. Mary said, "Let it be done to me according to your word." R. 4

5 Malia Puka O Kalani Church Fr. Joe Hennen will stand out because all the other furniture will be white. The musicians, choir, and song leaders will be relocated to the side of the altar (where the tabernacle was originally located). All of this should give the church a very clean, orderly, and warm focus while maintaining and building the Hawaiian uniqueness. All of this will be accomplished for less than $1, due to the true Hawaiian spirit existing on our parish. Mahalo! Malia parishioners creating banners for the Advent & Christmas Liturgies. ADVENT NOON PRAYER SERVICES The traditional O Antiphons have been part of the Catholic Advent liturgy for centuries. We have adapted them to the Hawaiian culture. A number of our parishioners created and made seven banners (note the pictures). Each banner will be the centerpiece of a prayer service starting this Thursday, Dec 17 and continuing through Dec 23. The banners will then all be hung in the church as part of the Christmas decorations. The O Antiphons are biblical titles given to the Messiah, Jesus. We invite you to join us in the seven day O Antiphon lunch prayer service which will be held in the patio of the church. The prayer service will be about minutes in length. (Feel free to bring your lunch along): Thursday, 12:30 pm Dec Wisdom from the Most High Friday, 12:30 pm Dec Ruler Saturday, 12:30 pm Dec Root of Jesse Sunday, 12:30 pm Dec Key of David Monday, 12:30 pm Dec Rising Dawn Tuesday, 12:20 pm Dec King Wednesday, 12:30 pm Dec Emmanuel CHURCH RENOVATION You are aware that parishioners have been doing a lot of renovations and painting in our church. The volunteerism and the donations toward the renovations have been wonderful. We are replacing and adding to the lighting so that the church will not be so dark. The goal is to restore the church to the authentic period in which it was built and to make it a source of inspirational devotion utilizing historical and original Hawaiian art. Some of this involves returning authentic artwork to the church. The Creation/Fire art which complements the Re-creation/Water art by Ken Charon will be brought back into the church. The crucifix will be under the art work. A restored tabernacle will be relocated to the center of the church (where the baptismal font was located). A smaller baptismal font will be relocated at the entrance to the church. The altar, the lectern, the presiding chair, and the tabernacle stand will all remain the beautiful Koa wood. These centers of the liturgy GROCERY STORE FOOD CERTIFICATES In place of the customary Giving Tree, Malia is collecting Certificates for Food issued by local Grocery Stores. Please consider purchasing a certificate for $10, $15, $20, or $25 and putting it in the Koa Offering Bowl. If you know of individuals and/or families who are in need of food, especially at this time of the year, please give the name and address to Fr. Joe or place the name and address in the Koa Bowl. A certificate will be sent to them from the people of Malia. Mahalo! PENANCE SERVICE We will have our monthly communal penance service on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 8:30 am. Please be aware that the service begins promptly at 8:30. In November, some people came a little late and it was over! This is a communal penance service with the opportunity for individual confession and absolution. THIS IS NOT A TIME FOR IN- DIVIDUAL COUNSELING AND/OR SPIRITUAL DI- RECTION. If you are seeking counseling and/or spiritual direction, please call the parish office and make an individual appointment. "Malia parishioners bring food at Thanksgiving to feed the hungry." 7 Our Lady of Guadalupe The feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to the sixteenth century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story. A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was baptized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning, December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady. He was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared and within it a young Native American maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared. Eventually the bishop told Juan Diego to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time Juan Diego s uncle became seriously ill. This led poor Diego to try to avoid the lady. The lady found Diego, nevertheless, assured him that his uncle would recover and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or tilma. When Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop s presence, the roses fell to the ground and the bishop sank to his knees. On Juan Diego s tilma appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. It was December 12, WELCOME TO OUR NEW PARISHIONERS!
