Fr. Damien of Molokai is our local example. He is a model of what is possible when a person deeply loves God, is dedicated to the well being of people, and does what is necessary to make a better world. The needs are great; but we know that the abundance of our God working through us is more than sufficient. We have greatness and heart here in Hawaii. May the work that we do together make the world we live in a little more worthy of our children and our grandchildren. WELCOME Rev. Herman Gomes! Do not miss this opportunity! Fr. 3 Sunday Reflection Fr. John M. Mbinda March 22, 2009: Fourth Sunday of Lent, Year B Readings: 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23; Ephesians 2:4-10; John 3:14-21 First Reading: 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, This reading recounts the destruction of Jerusalem, and the exile in Babylon (537 B.C.). The writer gives the reason for it, as well as the beginning of the restoration after the exile by the king Cyrus of Persia. The author explains the exile as a divine punishment because of the unfaithfulness of the civil leaders, priests as well as the people for not listening to the prophets of the time before the exile. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 137:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 Psalm 137 was composed after the return from the Babylonian exile. It recalls the sadness of that time. It also demonstrates the human inclination for vengeance (vv 8-9). Response: "Let my tongue be silenced if I ever forget you!" Second Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 Paul in this passage gives a post baptismal catechesis for the neophytes. God in his rich mercy and the love he had for us, when we were dead because of our sins, brought us to life with Christ. In other words, it is not by any efforts of our own that we earn salvation or the grace of Baptism, but only through God s free gift of sanctifying grace. We cannot earn God s gift, but we can and must respond to it by living in accord with it. Gospel: John 3:14-21 Nicodemus was a very proper Jewish gentleman and leader. However, because of the beginning opposition to Jesus among Nicodemus associates, he decided to approach Jesus secretly only by night. But this whole event signifies far more than a nocturnal lesson in doctrine it is an experience of the birth of faith. Nicodemus, who represents all that is best in Judaism, comes to Jesus out of a darkness that even the past revelation of God in the Jewish Scriptures could not dispel. He is a teacher, and he comes to Jesus, the Teacher par excellence, for enlightenment. But actually he encounters the Light of the World, who alone can dispel spiritual darkness. He knows the Scriptures, he has seen Jesus performed miracles, and now he hears his words. But that is not enough. The rebirth that so puzzles Nicodemus is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Faith is not merely accepting a doctrine or the understanding of a certain teaching. It is the intimate contact with Jesus Christ, who must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 6 A History of the St. Joseph Parish Hall The St. Joseph Parish chronicles report that in early 1924 Father Sebastian Korize, SS.CC. "was promoted from Waialua, Oahu, to Hilo, Hawaii." "He saw the need of a Community Hall and built the present St. Joseph's Parish Hall in 1927 at the cost of over $25, " Probably the largest non-theater meeting place in the area, its design nevertheless facilitated a multiplicity of uses. Externally it mirrored the Spanish baroque style of the church with concrete steps leading to a columned second-story portico facing Haili Street. Double doors opened onto a spacious auditorium/gym with a full stage at the opposite (Hamakua) end. The ground floor housed six or seven meeting/classrooms, commodious restrooms, a full kitchen, and storage space for the Boy Scouts' camping equipment. Both St. Mary's Boys' School (on the site of the Hilo Terrace Apartments on Waianuenue) and the St. Joseph Girls' School (a block from the church on Kapiolani Street) had students through the eighth grade. The students then transferred to Hilo High or moved to Oahu, with the girls attending St. Francis High School and the boys St. Louis College, as it was then known. How these families and students valued a Catholic education! The paint on the new hall was hardly dry when Father Sebastian immediately launched Hilo's second high school, ultimately the only Catholic high school on Big Island. Opening day was September 6, 1927, with 23 boys coming from St. Mary's, from Hilo Junior High and from as far away as Hakalau, Honomu, and Laupahoehoe. Three ground floor classrooms in the hall were their campus. On December 23, 1927, the newspaper reported that over 900 students, parents, family, and friends crowded into the newly completed hall for "the largest Christmas party ever given in Hilo." In 1928 Father then labored so that the girls at St. Joseph's would have their high school too. He ingeniously created space for their classrooms by jacking up the school building and installing classrooms in the enlarged basement. 6 The first week of June 1929 was indeed a busy one for the parish hall. Wednesday, June 5, saw the first combined commencements of the eighth and tenth grades of St. Joseph's and St. Mary's School's respectively. The valedictory was given by Lawrence Capellas followed by an address by Bishop Stephen Alencastre, our only Hawaii-born bishop. On the following night the St. Mary's Alumni Association's annual banquet was held in the very same location. The class of 1929 were guests of honor. The menu as taken from the printed program: "Fruit cocktail, pickles, olives, Chicken Broth a la Creole Soup, Saratoga Chips Potatoes, Stuffed Roast Turkey, Cranberry Sauce, Mashed Potatoes, Green Peas, Combination Salad, Pie a la Mode, Coffee, Cigars, and Cigarettes." Walter Victor, '29, spoke on behalf of his classmates. F a t h e r Sebastian completed the last capital project for the year when he replaced the paper shingles on the church roof with asbestos-cement shingles. However, the stock market crash just a few months later forestalled any other undertaking. The Old St. Joseph Church Parish Hall It was the Great Depression, when laborers earned only twenty cents an hour (if they were fortunate enough to find work). Unemployment insurance, food stamps, housing assistance, and other "safety nets" did not exist at that time. Nonetheless, by 1937 Father Sebastian had paid off nearly half the parish hall debt, leaving a balance of $13, to his successor. Famous for his hospitality and kindness toward both parishioners and fellow priests on the Island, Father spent nearly 14 years in Hilo. Sadly he suffered several slight strokes in 1937, and an "immense crowd of people sorrowfully bade Father Sebastian farewell Godspeed at the Hilo wharf." There was no opportunity to "clue in" his replacement who arrived on the very same day. The parish journal tells us, "Father Martin Dornbusch, SS.CC., arrived in Hilo on Wednesday, November 10, 1937." Continued on page 7

7 Father Martin had his work cut out for him. From the parish journal we learn: "The debt on the Parish Hall was still $13, House and church were in a deplorable condition. Bishop helped me with $ and I put a sheet iron roof on the house, with sheet iron gutter. The Hope chest was raffled off on thanks giving day and brought in $ " "February, '38. The house is being painted in the inside. The Holy Rosary Society and Sacred Heart Society allowed me $500, to paint the interior of the church, which job was begun the Monday after Easter." "Fair and Bazaar and 50% of the advertisements in "Hawaii Press" brought in about $ Painting of church interior finished just before Pentecost; exterior of the house painted and exterior of the church also." "July The Parish Hall is at last paid for, and now we can devote all our energy to the building of new sch. (school)." Economists tell us the Depression ended with the events at Pearl Harbor on December 7, Father Dornbush was in the midst of Sunday Mass, having just finished the Our Father when Father Morris approached the altar and advised Father to announce that all enlisted men had to leave church and report to headquarters. With the arrival of World War II to Hilo, Hawaii was put under martial law. The fear of bombing moved the military authorities in Honolulu to close Hawaii's churches and schools from that Sunday till December 19. Afterward only the churches were allowed to re-open and then only during the daylight hours. Ironically, at 11:30 p.m. of New Year's Eve, crackling sounds like gunfire echoed through Hilo. It wasn't firecrackers but a submarine shelling Hilo Harbor! The fear of invasion intensified. Hawaii was on wartime alert. Supervised by the Marianist Brothers, the older boys at St. Mary's built an air raid shelter at each of the two schools. Because the schools were still closed, children gathered in various homes in Hilo for instruction. The Public School Authorities asked to use the churches in Pahala and Kamuela for classes. This was soon superseded by the "Emergency Youth Program" enacted on January 26, Groups of fifty students were taught by the Sisters and Brothers in districts in Keaukaha, Piihonua, Homesteads, Houselots, St. Joseph and St. Mary's schools, and the parish hall. Out of necessity makeshift classrooms were created in the basements of homes, park pavilions and gyms, and the teachers "made-do" with crude benches and desks. This arrangement was short-lived. The USO, a national non-profit organization charged with maintaining the servicemen's morale, appropriated the parish hall as a "Home away from Home" for the GI's, as our soldiers were called. Here they could come for dances and social events, for movies and music, for a quiet place to talk or write home, or simply for a cup of coffee and a donut. There even was ping-pong and a darkroom! On September 14, 1943, fire broke out on the upper floor near the stage causing about $10,000 in damage. Investigators attributed the cause to overloaded electrical circuits because 15 rather than 30 ampere fuses were used. Ironically the USO claimed the needed fuses were to arrive a week later. Fortunately the lower floor suffered minimal damage. In spite of extensive repairs to the upper story, the roof line was permanently sway backed. The hall served admirably for an additional 49 years, all the while providing sustenance to voracious termites. In the '50's it served as the residence for Father Joyce and the other Maryknoll fathers while the old rectory was razed and the present structure was being built. In the 1970's it became the heart of the CCD program providing religious education to 600 students, exceeding the enrollment of both St. Joseph Schools! Celebrations, meetings, receptions, and gatherings of all sorts were held there. It was in the upper hall that parishioners gathered prior to processing to the church for Deacon LeRoy Andrew's ordination. Cosmetic improvements and an outdoor wheel chair ramp to the second floor were implemented in the early 1980's. Finally the termites prevailed. A structural engineering study for its complete overhaul instead recommended its demolition. This was done around For seventeen years our parish, like the wandering Israelites of the Old Testament, has had to make-do in tents or canopies for its festivals, meetings and other functions. Our parish offers no place to celebrate a wedding or a baptism, no place to offer solace following a funeral, no place to hug a first communicant, no place to greet the bishop, no place to share God's word with the young people of our parish, no place for these young people to dance, sing, and enjoy each other's company, no place for the older parishioners to share the past or be excited about the future, no place to celebrate the memories of parishioners and religious who planned, worked and sacrificed for our benefit. Already the first strides on our journey to a new hall have been made by some in our midst who, at personal financial risk procured the land necessary for a proper hall. But for their efforts we would have had to squeeze in an undersized building on the original parcel and elevate it to provide the spaces needed to meet the County's parking codes. Combining our Parish Hall Fundraising with the Diocesan Capital and Endowment Campaign give us an excellent opportunity to meet long-standing local and diocesan needs "in one fell swoop." With the Lord's help, let us all do our part! Submitted by: Dr. Stephen Woo 7
