2 Pastor s Corner Rev. Thomas Purayidathil Ph.D. WELCOME to our VISITORS Important Dates Saturday June 28 BREAKFAST with Fr. Tom for our Volunteer Church Cleaners Time: 8:30 10:00 am Place: St. Joseph Meeting Room Life is Changed Not Ended Part 1 The time immediately following death: The time immediately following death is often one of bewilderment and may involve shock or heartrending grief for the family and close friends. (Order of Christian Funerals 52) Perhaps the greatest proof of love is the grief we feel for its loss. Even though every death is felt in a unique way, we are always faced with the loss of love and we need to grieve. If we did not, we would be less than human. And grief needs to be shared. We need to know that we are not alone in our loss, that others too know that love has gone from our lives. My mother died over twenty years ago, but I have never forgotten her wake. After two hours of standing in line shaking hands, I was depressed because of inane remarks like She looks so alive. Then a woman I did not know took my hand and said that she hoped we were pleased with the way mother s hair looked since she had tried very hard. It turned out that she had done my mother s hair for years and had come to consider her a friend. Amid all that well-intentioned but vague generalities, here was someone who not only knew and cared for my mother but who had found a concrete way to share our loss. Reflecting on experiences like these can show us the deep human need to share our grief both in word and in gesture. We need rituals to express our own sorrow and to unite us so that we do not have to face the pain alone. Anything less deprives us of that unique opportunity for personal and spiritual growth that only grief provides. Yet we live in a culture that more and more is denying us the chance to grieve and to grow through our grief. Visitation hours are cut back; a memorial service at the convenience of the family take the place of a funeral. Overdone cosmetic embalming was enough of a denial of death; now there are companies which will arrange for the complete disposition of the remains, including the burial, without anyone being present other than employees. After leaving the deceased for the last time, the mourners are confronted next either with a neat grave or an appropriate urn. As American Catholics we need to become aware of how our way of ritualizing death is different from the culture around us. Instead of giving in the convenience or denial, we are called to celebrate the death of a Christian. How we can do so is the subject of this series. Through a careful use of the rites, the (Church s) minister helps the mourners to express their sorrow and to find strength and consolation through faith in Christ and his resurrection to eternal life. (OCF 52) WELCOME TO OUR NEW PARISHIONERS! Ben Laurence & Josie Acob Chic & Carmen Becerra Hilo Roman Catholic Community Mission Statement continued on page 5 We, the Hilo Roman Catholic Community of St. Joseph and Malia Puka O Kalani, guided by the Holy Spirit, Our Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph, gather as a family of believers in the celebration of the Eucharist. Blessed with many cultures, talents and inspired by the Hawaiian tradition of Aloha, we pledge to share our heritage, our gifts and the principles of our faith, and to commit ourselves to the educational, social and spiritual needs of all our brothers and sisters. 2
3 Sunday Reflection Rev. John M. Mbinda Scripture Readings June 15 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A Readings:Exodus 19:2-6a; Romans 5:6-11; Matthew 9:36-10:8 First Reading: Exodus 19:2-6a In this passage Moses communicates the message of the Lord God to the Israelites that if they keep his covenant, they will not only be a special possession of the Lord, but also a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. In other words, the Lord chooses them to be the means by which he would make himself present to all the nations, and draw them to himself. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 100:1-2, 3, 5 Psalm 100 is a song of the pilgrims as they approach the Lord s temple in Jerusalem. Their hearts are overwhelmed with gratitude and praise, and express it in this song that displays both thanks and confidence. Response: "We are his people: the sheep of his flock." Second Reading: Romans 5:6-11 The Second Reading is a continuation from last Sunday of Paul s understanding of Salvation. For him salvation means that because of his love, God has come to save us in Christ, while we were still sinners. Therefore we can have confidence in God s love which is unmerited and gratuitous. Through this same unconditional love, we have now received reconciliation through Christ. Gospel: Matthew 9:36-10:8 This passage is part of Jesus discourse on the mission of the twelve apostles. Upon seeing the crowds, Jesus is moved with pity because they seem troubled and abandoned. His observation of the harvest being abundant and the laborers being few introduces a sense of urgency, for the grain or fruit may be lost or destroyed if not harvested in time. That is why Jesus sends the apostles to go forth to do exactly what he had been doing, namely: to proclaim Good News; to announce that the kingdom of God is at hand; to cure the sick, to raise the dead, and to cast out demons. The connection with the first reading seems to be that this is the vocation of every Christian: a call to holiness and to a ministry of compassion and healing John M. 4 Hearty Welcome To Hilo Mother Mary Thadavanal & Sr. Mary Sebastian Charism & Spirit Founded by Stephen Ferrando, a Salesian Bishop, in 1942 and nurtured, by the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians for 26 years ( ), the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians inherited a rich spiritual legacy that is essentially Salesian in its character. The basic components of this spirituality are: disinterested love as enunciated by Francis de Sales, pastoral love as practiced by Don Bosco and his method of education, liturgical and Marian piety, and untiring work sanctified by prayer. What sets the Congregation apart however, is its specific missionary character that is born from the passionate love of Bishop Stephen Ferrando for missionary evangelization, which permeates the life and activities of the Missionary Sisters. Thus, the Congregation participates in and manifests the essential missionary nature of the Church. As articles 4 and 67 of the earlier edition of the Constitutions declare: The Congregation is dedicated, first and foremost, to the missionary apostolate. Therefore, the evangelization and catechetical instruction, especially of women folk and children in the villages of the dioceses in which they work, shall always have pride of place among the apostolic and charitable undertakings of the Missionary Sisters... Missionary work is not only an essential feature of the Congregation; it is the primary form of its apostolate and the reason why it was founded. The missionary dimension of the Congregation is our response to God who wants all people to have life in its fullness. It is our commitment to spread the Good News by the witness of life, the preaching of the Word, prayer and sacrifice. It calls for an authentic love for Jesus Christ and a deep personal faith in him. The Sisters earnestly strive to personalize the Gospel, to be effective witnesses of the Kingdom of God and its values. Therefore, being a missionary is the foundational element of our charism. The term missionary in our title is the distinguishing mark, the key factor that holds together everything. The quality and vitality of the Institute is always measured by the degree of missionary spirit its members possess. It is the motive behind all the programs and plans that the Congregation undertakes for the formation of its members, the organization of its communities and the fulfillment of its mission. 5 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS: Mahalo to everyone who helped to coordinate our First Holy Communion Masses. Thanks to all who decorated, assisted with the Mass, helped with the reception and made this day one that the children and families will remember forever. Congratulations to all of the 58 students who received their First Holy Communion on June 1st and June 8th this year. Your parish community loves and supports you and encourages you to continue your religious education and sign up for our classes next year. We hope to see all of you return. Religious Education classes will not be held over the Summer months, however, look for information about the school year in a future edition of our church bulletin. Registration will take place in August, with classes beginning in late August or early September. Madelyn Troelstrup and Liberty Albano ready to present leis to the first communicants as they arrive at church. We continue to look for interested students who want to serve our church community by becoming an altar server. We have openings at Malia Puka O Kalani church and at St. Joseph Church. If you have just received your First Holy Communion, you are eligible to serve in this very important ministry. Please call Joyce Saenz at to sign up for our next training date in July. Our R.C.I.A. program will have a sign up and information night in August. Please check the church bulletin for the date and time. Children s Liturgy will continue over the Summer months at our 7:00 am, 9:00 am and 11:30 am masses. Parents may accompany their child to the meeting room during Mass. We hope all of our families have a pleasant, restful and safe Summer. God bless you and we will see you all in Church! Joyce C. Saenz Life is Changed Not Ended continued from page 2 Questions: Why the title Order of Christian Funerals? An Order or Ordo is a collection of several rites. Because Christian burial entails several different rites, the title Order is more appropriate that rite in describing the ritual book. What role does the church envision for families in the burial of their dead? The Ordo is very specific on this point. The family and friends of the deceased should not be excluded from taking part in the services sometimes provided by undertakers, for example, the preparation and laying out of the body. (OCF 11) The family should be allowed to assist in whatever way they deem appropriate. Direct contact with the body of the deceased after death and during the rites of vigil, funeral mass, commendation, and committal is of great spiritual and psychological help to a family as they struggle to come to grips with the reality of death. They should work closely with the hospital, funeral home, and parish to see to it that the body is prepared, laid out, and buried according to Christian beliefs and their own family customs. Family members may place the pall over the coffin. The family should also be involved in the planning of the Funeral rites. They should take part in the selection of texts, music, and ministers. It is the role of the priest or other trained members of the parish to explain the rites to them in order that they may more fully take part in them. Such planning may even begin before death, if the circumstances allow. Recently I attended the burial of an aunt. Her funeral was held at 7:00 PM at night! They brought her body to the cemetery the next morning at 8:00 AM. Aren t funerals supposed to be in the morning? We have always been accustomed to funerals in the morning. Today, however, mornings are not always the most convenient time for family and friends of the deceased to come together. With the customary work day beginning at 8 or 9 AM, the evening is often the best time to gather the most people. The Ordo tells us that the funeral rites should be scheduled at times that permit as many of the community as possible to be present. 10 A Prayer For Fathers Most gracious Heavenly Father, We thank you for our earthly fathers, those to whom you have entrusted the responsibility to provide loving protection of their families and guidance of their children. We thank you, also, for our priests and bishops, whose spiritual fatherhood is so vital to the faith of your people. May our earthly fathers imitate the manly courage of Abraham, Jesse and Joseph, and all the holy fathers of the past in providing wise counsel to the children you have given to their care. And may our spiritual fathers be guided by the examples of Saints Peter and Paul, all the Apostles and their saintly successors. Give them valiant faith in the face of confusion and conflict, hope in time of trouble and sorrow, and steadfast love for you, for their families, and for all your people throughout the world. Assist all fathers of families, all spiritual fathers, and all Christian men, that through your Grace they may steadily grow in holiness and in knowledge and understanding of your Truth. May they generously impart this knowledge to those who rely on them. As you, our Heavenly Father, so loved the world, sending your only Son to be our Savior and Redeemer, we ask you to help all men to imitate His fatherly gentleness and mercy toward those who are weak; His humility, perfect obedience to your Will, and fearless witness to your Truth. May their lives be examples to all of heroic faithfulness to you. We ask your blessing on all those to whom you have entrusted fatherhood. May your Holy Spirit constantly inspire them with justice and mercy, wisdom and strength, fidelity and self-giving love. May they receive your Grace abundantly in this earthly life, and may they look forward to eternal joy in your presence in the life to come. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son and Our Lord, AMEN. Happy Father s Day!
