2 Important Dates: YOUTH MASS Oct :30am St. Joseph Church Second Collection: World Mission Sunday Oct. 23/24 Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the Missions grow - as new dioceses are formed, as new seminaries are opened because of the growing number of young men hearing Christ's call to follow Him as priests, as areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt, and as other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the message of Christ and His Church. That is why the involvement and commitment of Catholics from around the world is so urgently needed. Offerings from Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings to the Propagation of the Faith worldwide. Mission dioceses - about 1,100 at this time - receive regular annual assistance from the funds collected. Pastor s Corner Fr. Samuel E. Loterte. SSS Patron Saint of: North America ST. ISAAC JOGUES My confidence is placed in God who does not need our help for accomplishing his designs. Our single endeavor should be to give ourselves to the work [He has placed before us] and to be faithful to him, and not to spoil his work by our shortcomings" -St. Isaac Jogues Isaac Jogues and his companions were the first martyrs of the North American continent officially recognized by the Church. As a young Jesuit, Isaac Jogues, a man of learning and culture, taught literature in France. He gave up that career to work among the Huron Indians in the New World, and in 1636 he and his companions, under the leadership of John de Brébeuf, arrived in Quebec. The Hurons were constantly warred upon by the Iroquois, and in a few years Father Jogues was captured by the Iroquois and imprisoned for 13 months. His letters and journals tell how he and his companions were led from village to village, how they were beaten, tortured and forced to watch as their Huron converts were mangled and killed. An unexpected chance for escape came to Isaac Jogues through the Dutch, and he returned to France, bearing the marks of his sufferings. Several fingers had been cut, chewed or burnt off. Pope Urban VIII gave him permission to offer Mass with his mutilated hands: "It would be shameful that a martyr of Christ be not allowed to drink the Blood of Christ." Welcomed home as a hero, Father Jogues might have sat back, thanked God for his safe return and died peacefully in his homeland. But his zeal led him back once more to the fulfillment of his dreams. In a few months he sailed for his missions among the Hurons. In 1646 he and Jean de Lalande, who had offered his services to the missioners, set out for Iroquois country in the belief that a recently signed peace treaty would be observed. They were captured by a Mohawk war party, and on October 18 Father Jogues was tomahawked and beheaded. Jean de Lalande was killed the next day at Ossernenon, a village near Albany, New York. The first of the Jesuit missionaries to be martyred was René Goupil who, with Lalande, had offered his services as an oblate. He was tortured along with Isaac Jogues in 1642, and was tomahawked for having made the Sign of the Cross on the brow of some children. Jean de Brébeuf ( ): Jean de Brébeuf was a French Jesuit who came to Canada at the age of 32 and labored there for 24 years. He went back to France when the English captured Quebec (1629) and expelled the Jesuits, but returned to his missions four years later. Although medicine men blamed the Jesuits for a smallpox epidemic among the Hurons, Jean remained with them. Saint Joseph Church Mission Statement: Centered on the Word of God and the Eucharist we gather as a community of disciples of Jesus Christ as we seek fullness of life. Blessed with many cultures and gifted with the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha we pledge to share our heritage and our faith, and commit ourselves to the full development of our people. With Saint Joseph as our patron we offer our gift of self for the greater glory of God. He composed catechisms and a dictionary in Huron, and saw 7,000 converted before his death. He was captured by the Iroquois and died after four hours of extreme torture at Sainte Marie, near Georgian Bay, Canada. Father Anthony Daniel, working among Hurons who were gradually becoming Christian, was killed by Iroquois on July 4, His body was thrown into his chapel, which was set on fire. Gabriel Lalemant had taken a fourth vow to sacrifice his life to the Indians. He was horribly tortured to death along with Father Brébeuf. Father Charles Garnier was shot to death as he baptized children and catechumens during an Iroquois attack. Father Noel Chabanel was killed before he could answer his recall to France. He had found it exceedingly hard to adapt to mission life. He could not learn the language, the food and life of the Indians revolted him, plus he suffered spiritual dryness during his whole stay in Canada. Yet he made a vow to remain until death in his mission. These eight Jesuit martyrs of North America were canonized in Americancatholic.org 2

3 Reflection Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. If you love a story with a twist, you've got to like the parables of Jesus. Today we have another surprising one: Once upon a time there was an unjust judge who was badgered by a widow in his town until he relented and gave her justice. Now did you get the twist in the story? by Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M. Scripture scholar Barbara Reid suggests that we might see the widow as the hero of the story, and as an image of God. Now there's a twist! Could Jesus have intended us to focus on a character who is defenseless in her society, seemingly helpless, as the one who fights for justice until she wins? If we put her in the context of Christ's own triumph over suffering and death, it makes a lot of sense. Christ was powerless before those who led him to the cross, but won victory in that seeming defeat. We may seem powerless before all that is unjust in our world. We may even pray a lot for those on the side of good to triumph over evil. And since the answers to our prayers often seem slow in coming, we may get discouraged and lose heart. But Jesus' parable today encourages not to. We're to keep praying and working for peace and justice. God is with us in the struggle. I m Father Greg Friedman, with the "Sunday Soundbite" for St. Anthony Messenger Press, on the Web at FranciscanRadio.org. PRAY ALWAYS: Luke 18:1-8 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, Grant me justice against my opponent. For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming. And the Lord said, Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? 9 Malia Puka O Kalani Church RELIGIOUS EDUCATION/HALLOWEEN: Fr. Joe Hennen Halloween has become a kid s secular holiday for trick and treating. However, its roots are Christian. This Irish Feast celebrated the fundamental mystery of our faith regarding life and death, good and evil. This year, Halloween occurs on Sunday. Therefore, we are going to celebrate the true traditional meaning of Halloween at our liturgies on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 30 and 31. The religious education students will be carving pumpkins in preparation for the celebration. It might surprise everyone that the jack-o-lantern was an Irish religious symbol brought to the United States in the early 1800s. The jack-o-lanterns will be part of the sanctuary decorations as we celebrate the TRUE meaning of Halloween. (Parishioners ---kids and want-a-be kids --- who are not in the Religious Education program are invited to carve out a pumpkin and have it be part of the altar decorations). All carved pumpkins need to be at the church by 3:00 pm on Saturday, Oct. 30. All the religious education students and their guests will have a special Halloween party in the Church Hall after the 9:00 Mass on Sunday, Oct. 31. The party will end at 12:00 Noon. The carved out pumpkins of the religious education students will be judged and prizes given. The Religious Education students are invited to bring no more than 5 guests (friends, cousins, etc.) to the 9:00 Mass and the Halloween party afterwards. We hope that this celebration will be a great teaching moment, as well as a wonderful liturgical celebration. COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE: Sin is still a part of our life and our world. We often preach about tolerance in our pluralistic society. While we need to be tolerant of everyone, we also need to recognize sin and evil where it exists, most especially in ourselves. We will have a Communal Penance Service (with an opportunity for individual confession and absolution) on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 8:30 am. We are encouraged to make the awareness of sin within ourselves a reality. BAPTISM CLASS: If you have a child you plan to present for Baptism during the months of Oct., Nov., Dec., or January please call Samantha ( ) to register for the Baptism Class. The class will be scheduled at a time convenient to all registrants. ADULT CONFIRMATION: We are going to continue checking if there are any registered parishioners (18 years old and older) who have been baptized but never confirmed and are interested in being confirmed at the Easter Vigil. Please call or the parish office ASAP or leave a note in the KOA Bowl. If there are a few who are interested we will begin a preparation course. MAHALO: Through the efforts of Luanna Leite and LaVern Costa nearly $ was raised for the parish by the sale of the 180 Sweet Breads that fell into Luanna s lap. This is a real example of creativity, generosity, and concern for our parish. Mahalo to them and to all who bought the Sweet Breads. KOA OFFERING BOWL: A few weeks ago I, Fr. Joe, made an appeal regarding our KOA Offering Bowl. If you have been watching the weekly offerings the past few weeks you will have noticed that the response to the appeal has been outstanding. In the name of the parish and all who love this parish, we say a very loud and sincere, MAHALO!
