SSS Dear brothers and sisters. Peace in the Lord Jesus Christ! Saint Luke consistently highlights the plight of the poor. For him, discipleship is synonymous with service that finds expression in the care of the needy. More than any other writer of the gospels, he emphasizes the danger of power and riches. However, it is important to stress that in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, it is not the rich man's wealth that causes his condemnation. It is his uncaring attitude in the face of Lazarus' misery that makes him unworthy of God's dwelling place. The rich man is the personification of those who fail to see the face of Jesus in the suffering persons at their doorsteps. On the last day, these will be told by Jesus: "Whatever you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me." May I take this opportunity to also invite all parishioners in patronizing Saint Joseph School as they hold the Country Fair this coming October 2, Let us as a parish community support and pray for the success of this fund raising project God bless you, Fr. Samuel E. Loterte. SSS SOCIETY OF ST. DAMIEN: The next meeting is on September 29, 2010, at 10 am. All are welcomed to join us as we venture into our new project on Making Rosaries to send overseas. Leonita will be the resource personnel to give us the training on Making Rosaries. PAX ET BONUM Peace and Good from the Secular Franciscans of St. Joseph Fraternity. As we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi we will be hosting a fundraiser from which the proceeds will be shared with the Youth Group as well as the Parish Outreach. On the weekend of October 2 nd & 3 rd we will have available "Goodie Bags" for that special pet in your life in keeping with St. Francis respect for all of creation for a $1 donation. Also available will be selected Religious Articles at various prices so, pet or no pet, do stop by our table under the canopy in the parking lot to make your selections. Mahalo. In 2009, we came together again and stocked food pantry shelves everywhere with a global total of 204,400 non-perishable food items. Now, in 2010, we ask that our family comes together once again for our Give It Away Now: Thirst for Change! We invite all our Life Teen and Edge parishes to join together to do this Life Night on the same date, September 26, 2010, and as one family we can accomplish together a corporal work of mercy by giving drink to the thirsty. Our challenge this year is a change drive to raise funds to build clean water wells in Africa. As one Life Teen family, our goal is to raise $50,000 to build four wells in Ghana, Africa. Look for us at the NEXT YOUTH MASS READY AND WILLING TO CHANGE THE WORLD 4

5 Malia Puka O Kalani Church Fr. Joe Hennen My Dear Malia Parishioners: I express my deepest gratitude to Fr. Joe Carroll for celebrating the Eucharist with you these past six weekends. I understand that he refers to me as "The young Fr. Joe"! That is an amazing but welcome leap into fantasy when referring to a seventy year old man! Yet, this temporary leap from reality even increases my endearment toward him! I hold Fr. Joe Carroll in the palm of my hands as I express my Mahalo to the Lord. I am also very grateful to all of you for your patience, your understanding, your expressions of concern and love and, most of all, your private prayers, your novena, your Masses. Your care for me humbles me and increases, if even possible, my love for you. I plan to arrive at Malia on Thursday, Sept 30th and will again celebrate the Eucharist with you on the weekend of Oct May God bless you... Fr. Joe Hennen Fr. Joe Carroll Natalie, & Judy Father Joe "C" Notes: For 6 weeks I've tried to take the place of a much younger priest, Fr. Joe Hennen, your loving pastor. All of you made it easy, and enjoyable,--with a feeling of "family" in the Eucharistic Community of Malia. Through the efforts of so many, Liturgy and leisure pleasantly passed in the short visits. It complimented a long-time association with the Big Island's special parish of Malia Puka O Kalani."Thanks" began when St. Stephen and Blessed Sacrament Parishes on Oahu excused me from previously scheduled weekend Masses. St. Joe's, in "far away--hilo Town," always has a quiet, hidden help. But, its the dear people of our own Malia parish, the visible ministers and the "Holy Menehunes," who deserve the "BIG MAHALO"! Your tokens of caring showed a kind concern for my welfare and welcome. "Man does not live by "Subway" alone." Even with Fr. Joe, the younger, gone, our bonding of brother priests continued to grow. This "bonding" included us all in the Spirit of Jesus, in His Love and Peace, -- and Service. Hopefully, -- again, one of these days! BLESSING OF PETS: Monday, October 4th is the Feast of St. Francis of Asissi, the model of peace. He was a mentor to all of us on how to live in harmony with nature. We will celebrate his spirit by blessing the natural, non-human, living creatures that share our world with us. These creatures can be plants or animals that enrich our lives and our world. The Blessing will take place at 11:30 am, in the patio. (You can either bring these living creatures with you to the 9:15 Mass------(-if they are animals, please keep them outside or in the car during Mass!) or, you can go home and get them after Mass. Remember, in the spirit of St. Francis, we will bless all living things that enrich our world, plant or animal. 11:30 am Sunday, Oct 3.
