2 IMPORTANT DATES Pastor s Corner Rev. Samuel Loterte, SSS St. Joseph School Country Fair Saturday, October 3 Religious Education: No R.E. classes on Sunday October 4 and Sunday October 11 PPAC Meeting Tuesday September 29 6:00 PM Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Peace! We all know that the Lord is a God of infinite goodness and generosity. He showers graces that are more than we ever deserve. He sends us His Spirit who blows where he wills., giving charisms and gifts to men and women, even to those whom we think are undeserving. In return, God invites us to receive everything as a gift and to be happy in his generosity. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, n.800 tells us, Charisms are to be accepted with gratitude by the person who receives them, and by all members of the Church as well. They are a wonderfully rich grace for the apostolic vitality and for the holiness of the entire Body of Christ. Since each one of us has received gifts from the same Spirit, we are to share these gifts to the betterment of the mission of Jesus. We need to help each other to accomplish wonderful things for God s kingdom. God bless you all, Fr. Samuel E. Loterte, SSS Pastor Prayer for the Week Almighty God, You are present with those who perform great deeds In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Remove all jealousy that comes from our hearts. Enable us to see people and things from your perspective. Remove whatever leads us away from you And draw all men and women into the circle of your kingdom. Amen. Reflection Question: What it is that keeps me or blocks me from truly following Jesus? What is the canonization process? Canonization follows a rigorous examination of the person s life and reputation for holiness, and miracles attributed to the person s intercession. Canonization is preceded by beatification, an honor Damien received from Pope John Paul II in Brussels on June 4, Beatification gave Damien the title of Blessed. Both beatification and canonization require a documented miracle. Damien s miracle for beatification was the overnight healing 100 years ago of a French nun who was close to death from an intestinal ailment. The second miracle was the disappearance of cancer from the lungs of Audrey Toguchi, a retired Oahu public school teacher in fatherdamien.com 2

3 Sunday Reflection: JEALOUS CHRISTIANS "Are you jealous?" Numbers 11:29 People who have been given a new life in Jesus and are filled with the Spirit seem especially tempted to spiritual jealousy. They're jealous of Eldad and Medad prophesying (Nm 11:29), of Moses leading (Nm 12:1), of a stranger expelling demons (Mk 9:38), or of John and James trying to get a "spiritual" promotion (Mt 20:24). The Lord does not tolerate spiritual jealousy. Miriam became a snow-white leper after her outbreak of jealousy against Moses (Nm 12:10). Jesus said that being drowned or maimed is preferable to falling into the sin of spiritual jealousy (Mk 9:42-47). The first murder was committed because of spiritual jealousy. Cain was jealous that Abel's offering was accepted by God and his own wasn't (Gn 4:4-5). Jesus was crucified because of the jealousy of the religious leaders (Mt 27:18). The Jews of Antioch in Pisidia persecuted Paul and Barnabas because of jealousy (Acts 13:45). Some of history's worst sins can be attributed to spiritual jealousy. Resist any temptations to jealousy, and repent of any sins of jealousy. 5 St. Damien De Veuster, from Tremeloo to Hilo submitted by Dr. Stephen Woo St. Damien De Veuster, from Tremeloo to Hilo The canonization of a saint is an occasion for joy and gratitude, and if the saint had lived in our land the joy is multiplied many fold So it is with Blessed Damien whose elevation to sainthood on October 11,2009, is a source of pride to all Hawaii. For us on the Big Island and especially of St. Joseph Parish it is a special blessing, for indeed he was and is "one of us. " Joseph De Veuster-His Early Years A chill breeze swirled up the banks of the ice-bound Laah River and swept through Tremeloo, a village of 1,600 in northern Belgium. Among the steep tiled roofs was the two story red brick home of Frans De Veuster, a successful farmer and father of six. On the morning of January 3, 1840 he, his children and his cousin Joseph Goovaerts from Antwerp, waited excitedly for the unfolding of events in an upstairs bedroom. Finally the loud, penetrating cry of a newborn rang through the house as Anne Catherine De Veuster presented her husband with a fourth son. Cousin Joseph, a retired soldier and prosperous grain merchant in Antwerp, accepted the invitation to be the godfather with the understanding that, should it be a boy, he would be his namesake. With that afternoon's christening, "Joseph" joined Eugenie, Leonce, Gerard, Constance, Pauline and Auguste in the De Veuster household. Belgium in the early 1840's was a prosperous country, blessed with peace despite the fact it had gained independence from the Netherlands only ten years before. Those in the north next to the Netherlands spoke Flemish, a tongue similar to Dutch, while the Belgians of the south used the language of their neighbors the French. Most of Tremeloo's citizens were educated Catholic farmers who led simple and straightforward lives. Their offspring were schooled through high school, and the parents decided when (and not whether) the boys were to pursue a career in farming and when the girls would marry. Exceptions were made for offspring with special talents. Eugenie, the oldest, was blessed with virtue, compassion and piety She entered the Ursuline Convent. Auguste, two years older than Joseph, had the intellect, demeanor and sensitivity suitable for the priesthood. Joseph, nicknamed "Jef," and brothers Leonce and Gerard were to spend their lives as farmers. Jef was a hard worker, quickly mastering planting, harvesting, animal husbandry, carpentry and other manual arts. Not only was he bright, he was strong. As a thirteen year old he could heave 100 kilogram (220 pound) bags of grain with ease. Jef and Auguste, being the youngest, were very close and often confided in each other. Thus only Auguste knew of Jefs secret ambition to be a priest, and he supported and encouraged his younger brother by promising that, be it God's will, they would work side-by-side to further the Lord's kingdom like the twin physician brothers of the early Church, Saints Cosmas and Damien. In time Auguste left for the minor seminary where he chose the name Pamphile, after St. Pamphilus, the great third century scholar and teacher. To Jef the loss of his closest companion required considerable adjustment, and Jef decided his outlet would be to pursue a greater worship of God through secret acts of mortification. Of this Pamphile wrote, "Under his bed he hid a long board, which at night he placed in his bed and slept on it. Each morning when he arose, he was careful to hide the board again, but one morning he forgot. When our mother discovered the plank she was appalled and with a severe reprimand put an end to this practice. " (to be continued) 5

6 To All Parishes and Schools Regarding Father Damien s Canonization From Bishop Larry Silva On Sunday, October 11, our Holy Father will canonize Blessed Father Damien at a 10:00 a.m. (Rome time) Mass in St. Peter s Square. EWTN is going to broadcast the canonization live, so it will be shown in Hawaii at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10. It will be preceded on Oceanic Cable OC 16 at 9:00 p.m. by an hour-long video documentary on Father Damien being prepared by a local film company under the direction of Venny Villapando, a member of the diocesan Father Damien/Mother Marianne Commission. On Sunday, October 11 (Hawaii Time), the following will be broadcast: Replay of Canonization at 7:30 a.m. on EWTN Digital Channel 408 Replay of Damien Biography at 1:00 p.m. on Oceanic Cable OC 16 Replay of Canonization at 2:00 p.m. on Oceanic Cable 16 We encourage parish and school groups to view these historic festivities together in parish halls or churches. You may want to begin with a program after celebrating the Saturday evening parish Mass with a potluck dinner, a concert in honor of Father Damien, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, a prayer service, a lecture, or some other way of drawing people into the joyful event. It may be a good opportunity for evangelization or new evangelization, since Father Damien is universally admired. Respect for Life On Sunday, October 4, 2009, our nation will observe Respect Life Sunday. Since 1991, we in Hilo have gathered on the corner of Makalaa and Kanoelehua (Orchid Isle Ford/Borders/Hilo Hattie/Hopaco) to show our concern for the unborn. Many faiths are represented and the emphasis is on vigilant but quiet prayer. The Life Chain will be from 1-2:30 pm. Placards with various messages will be provided. Please join us, even for only a little while. If we accept that a mother may kill even her own child, how can we tell others not to kill each other? Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to live, but to use any violence to get what they want. Mother Teresa of Calcutta LOVE THY PET In the Joyful Spirit of St. Francis of Assisi a Treat Bag for your finned, furry or feathered friend will be available for only $1 on the weekend of October 3rd and 4th after all the masses as we, the Secular Franciscans of St. Joseph, Hilo, commemorate the anniversary of St. Francis. Make a note to purchase one or two (or more) and treat your pet. Pax et Bonum, Peace and Good! Sponsored by the Secular Franciscans St. Joseph Fraternity 6

7 Bishop Stephen Ferrando, S.D.B. The Servant of God Founder of MSMHC Birthday on September 28 Archbishop Stephen Ferrando, the Bishop of Shillong founded the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC), the first indigenous congregation on October 24, 1942, at Guwahati, Assam, India with missionary evangelization as its primary charism. This has become an important and greatest contribution he made to the Church of North-East region of India, and to the universal church at large. The name of the Congregation that bears the title, Mary Help of Christians indicates the profound love the founder had for the Blessed Mother. The Congregation became an Institute of Pontifical Right on March 21, 1977 during the Pontificate of his holiness Paul VI. The Congregation is now a living monument and the greatest missionary legacy of Bishop Ferrando. Stephen Ferrando was born on September 28, 1895 at Rossiglione, near Genova in Northern Italy. He was ordained a priest at Borgo San Martino on March 18, Driven with an unflagging zeal for Christ and his mission, he and eight of his companions left for Indian Missions and reached Shillong, on December 23, He carried out every task entrusted to him faithfully until he was appointed Bishop of Krishnagar in At his Episcopal ordination Bishop Ferrando took the inspiring motto Apostle of Christ. After a year of service at Krishnagar, he took charge of the Diocese of Shillong as its second Bishop on March 14, 1936 and shepherded the flock for 34 years. He became an instrument in God s hands to shape the mission history of North-East India. The great social crisis brought about by the World War II provided for him a unique missionary vision that was to change the face of North-East India. Considering the need of the pastoral presence among the people, particularly those in remote villages, the realization of the impossibility for the few priests to meet this need, his love for the people and their rich and varied cultures inspired him to found an indigenous Congregation in this region. Being filled with an apostolic zeal he took keen interest in teaching of catechism to children and adults, the promotion of social and Catholic action, inculturization of the cultures of the people of North-East India, the poor and the marginalized section of the society. His unique virtues of humility, simplicity and approachability are to be admired. Bishop Ferrando s passion for missionary evangelization found an expression in the charism and spirit of the Congregation he founded. Every form of apostolate is implemented from the point of view of a missionary who has a great spirit of union with God and genuine love for the people. The Eucharist is the source of all missionary activities of the Sisters. Mary is looked upon as the special Protector of the Congregation. The founder has envisioned a specific spirituality for the Congregation by selecting certain saints as patrons and protectors of the Institute. They are Mary Help of Christians, St. Joseph, St. John Bosco and St. Theresa of the Child Jesus. Another important element that the founder wished his Sisters to possess, an element that is so very dear to his heart is the family spirit. The variety of vocations from different ethnic groups and cultures constitute the wealth of the Congregation. Today the MSMHC Congregation has 983 members hailing from 50 ethnic groups. Bishop Ferrando had to resign as the Bishop of Shillong in 1969 due to new government policies after 46 years of untiring missionary work. After nine years of retired but active life in the Salesian house at Genova-Quarto, Italy, Bishop Stephen Ferrando died on June 20, In 1987, his mortal remains were taken to Shillong and interred in the chapel of St. Margaret s Convent, Peachlands, Shillong, the mother house. Many people who come and pray at his tomb and through his intercession have received healing and other graces. May the glorious example of this great Missionary Archbishop Stephen Ferrando, the Servant of God, inspire us in our service to the people especially the poor and the needy. 7
