2 Important Dates Pastor s Corner Rev. Samuel Loterte, SSS Sacristan Ministry Meeting August 1, (Sat.) l:30 pm Rectory Meeting Room Anyone interested in participating in the Sacristan Ministry is invited to attend. July 26, 2009, 17th Sunday of Ordinary Time My dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, In last Sunday's Gospel we all learned that there is no such thing as a wrong or bad timing when it comes to doing good. This Sunday's Gospel continues on that theme. Jesus performs the Multiplication of the loaves. His action of taking the boy's five barley loaves and two fish, then blessing, breaking, and giving them to the people has ignited a miracle. It paved the way for people to open their hearts and start sharing their own loaves with others. This is what we mean when we speak of responsible stewardship. Over here at St. Joseph Church, I am happy to see many of you who have been sharing your LOVE OFFERINGS to the Lord. The Good Lord must be well pleased with your generous and loving hearts. However, for those who have been used to the usual free willing way in the manner they share, may I invite you to take a deeper look at the meaning of your giving. Remember, it is for the Lord and for His mission. YOUTH MASS August 9 & 23 11:30 am St. Joseph Church MARK YOUR CALENDAR! Religious Education Registration August 16 (Sunday) 8:00 am 1:00 pm Saint Joseph Jr./Sr. High School WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS May the miracle of the multiplication of loaves continue to happen here in our beloved Parish community. May the miracle happen in each one of us. In that way, I believe that we would have the twelve wicker baskets of leftover fragments as a sign of God's abundance. May the Lord bless you with His abundant love, Fr. Samuel, SSS FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) Question: If the Mass is the source and summit of the entire Christian life, then why have Eucharistic Adoration? Answer: The celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist is, certainly, the "fount and apex" of the entire Christian life. Yet the "spiritual life...is not limited solely to participation in the liturgy. Pope John Paul II called worship of the Most Holy Eucharist outside Mass "an important daily practice (that) becomes an inexhaustible source of holiness" and a practice "of inestimable value for the life of the Church," so much so that "it is the responsibility of Pastors to encourage, also by their personal witness, the practice of Eucharistic adoration, and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in particular, as well as prayer of adoration before Christ present under the Eucharistic species." 3 Sunday Reflection: by Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M. July 26, 2009, 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) 2 Kgs 4:42-44 Ps 145:10-11, 15-16, Eph 4:1-6 Jn 6:1-15 If you've traveled through an airport in another country, where a different language is spoken, you know the importance of signs graphics that tell where to change money, catch a taxi or train, and of course, find the restroom! These signs need to be clear, lest there be misunderstanding. When we exchange more complex signs, such as in a relationship, we choose them even more carefully for the risk of misunderstanding is even greater. Beginning today, our Gospel readings for five weeks come from chapter six of John s Gospel, where Jesus is portrayed as the "Bread of Life." In today s selection, Jesus feeds a crowd of hungry people with a few loaves of bread and some fish. The people are looking for a prophet, someone like Moses, who promised that a heroic figure like himself was to come in the future. Having witnessed the sign of the feeding of the crowd, some misunderstand and want to make Jesus king. He departs, rather than be drawn into their misguided interpretation of his purpose. Like other signs we use, those surrounding our celebration of Eucharist are open to misunderstanding or at least we can take them for granted. Let's let today s Gospel lead us more deeply into these signs, to discover the person of Jesus Christ, present as the Bread of Life, the very life of God. St. Anthony Messenger Press, franciscanradio.org. For the Ride Home by Ted Bergh 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) July 26, Kgs 4:42-44 Ps 145:10-11, 15-16, Eph 4:1-6 Jn 6:1-15 Scripture They shall eat and there shall be some left over. (2 Kings 4:43) The eyes of all look hopefully to you, and you give them their food in due season; (Psalm 145:15) as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:4-6) Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. (John 6:11) Reflection Why were the people following Christ? What do they want? In today s scripture does anyone go without? Is spiritual food (God s love and grace) plentiful or scarce? A small amount of food from one or two people in the crowd becomes food enough for all after it is blessed (transcended) by Christ. Do you have a gift to provide to the community through Jesus? God reveals himself where there is anyone who respects life, who desires the light, who seeks to love. Every time you open yourself to life, every time you act the truth, every time you love, God is there in your action. It is if you were creating your God. By doing things as Jesus would do them, as God would do them you free God from the veils of invisibility and make him visible on man s journey. 4 YEAR FOR PRIESTS June 19, 2009, through June 19, 2010 declared by Pope Benedict XVI About Priesthood Who is a Catholic priest? A Catholic Priest is a man who has been called by God to serve the Church in the person of Christ the Head. He is a man who loves God, the Church, and the People he serves. He Exercises this love thru his promises of celibacy, obedience, and simplicity of life. He is a man rooted in prayer, who joyfully and sacrifically lives his life for others. Who is a diocesan priest? A Diocesan priest is a parish Priest. "Diocesan" comes from a Greek word meaning "to keep house," and "parish" (also a Greek word) means "A dwelling beside or near." A diocesan priest is the priest involved in the day-to-day lives of people. He "lives near them" in every way, and helps the local bishop to "keep house" in the family of God, either as an Associate Pastor or as a Pastor (and sometimes in ministries like teaching, or serving as a campus minister, or as a chaplain in a hospital, a military base, or a prison). What's the difference between a religious priest and a diocesan priest? A religious priest (a member of a religious order or society) takes the vow of poverty as well as vows of celibacy and obedience. Usually, he lives with a number of other priests or brothers of his religious community. His service to the Church may extend beyond the diocese: he can expect to be sent anywhere in the world where his community is working. A diocesan priest, on the other hand, ordinarily serves within the diocese for which he is ordained. He makes a commitment to his bishop. He does not, however, take a vow of poverty. Instead, he is paid a salary from which he must pay for his own car, gas, insurance, clothes, and personal needs. The message of the Holy Curé of Ars for us today The beating heart: celebrating and adoring the Eucharist He is there! exclaimed the Holy Curé looking at the tabernacle. Man of the Eucharist, celebrated and adored: There is nothing greater than the Eucharist, he exclaimed. Perhaps what struck him the most was to realize that his God was there, present for us in the tabernacle: He is waiting for us!. Coming to the realization of the real presence of God in the Blessed Sacrament was perhaps one of his greatest graces and one of his greatest joys. Giving God to men and men to God: the Eucharistic sacrifice soon became the heart of his days and of his pastoral ministry. Discernment Dinner with Bishop Larry Friendly Greetings from Paniolo Country! I hope the summer has been fulfilling for you. I am the vicariate representative for the Diocesan Vocations Committee. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of. - Catechism of the Catholic Church (# 2280) 5

6 The death of St. James is the only biblical record we have of the death of one of the Apostles, and he was the first of that chosen band to give his life for his Master. Catholic saints are holy people and human people who lived extraordinary lives. Each saint the Church honors responded to God's invitation to use his or her unique gifts. God calls each one of us to be a saint. St. James the Greater Apostle Feast Day July 25 Saint James, pray for us that we may be willing to leave everything to follow Jesus as you did. Help us to become special friends of Jesus as you were. Amen ames the Greater was Saint John the Evangelist s older brother, one of the three Apostles to whom Jesus gave special attention. But he was no saint when Christ called J him. As a matter of fact, Jesus nicknamed him and his brother Sons of Thunder, which shows you how meek and self-controlled they were. One time, when a town in Samaria refused to put up Christ and the disciples for the night, the brothers asked permission to call down fire and brimstone to demolish the place how s that for gentle, sweet piety! (Christ did not grant them the permission, by the way). Later on they even approached the Lord (actually, they sent their mother to approach him for them) to request the second and third ranking in his kingdom. How s that for calm and patient humility! And yet, it was men like these, impetuous and full of passion, whom Christ chose to be his intimate companions and closest collaborators. Their love for him and their desire to serve him gave them the strength they needed to build virtue by mastering their natural tendencies (I am sure the Holy Spirit helped out a bit as well). James ended up as the first Apostle to be martyred, and his dignity and self-control in the face of the trumped-up charges against him during the trial so moved the onlookers that his accuser became a Christian on the spot. As they walked to their execution together, the convert asked James to forgive him for turning him in. The Apostle looked at him, said Peace be with you, and embraced him. A far cry from the earlier fire and brimstone! That s Christian character formation. So don t be surprised at your outbursts, and don t let them discourage you. Take yourself to the Lord in prayer, ask for the grace to imitate more closely his humility and self-control, and get to work on developing virtue. Then rest assured that, with the grace of God, you will do great things for the Kingdom. For more information, please call Sr. Lusika Sangma at Saint Anne & Saint Joachim Parents of Mary Feast Day: July 26 Lord, God of our fathers, through Saints Joachim and Anne You gave us the Mother of Your Incarnate Son. May their prayers help us to attain the salvation You promised to Your people. Amen. Joachim and Anne were the parents of Mary and the grandparents of Jesus. The name "Hannah" means grace. In Galilee, where she lived, Mary's mother was probably called "Hannah" even though we know her as Saint Anne. So, if you are named "Hannah" or "Anne" you are named after the mother of Our Blessed Mother. It was in the womb of Saint Anne that Mary was immaculately conceived. From the first instant of her life, she was in a state of grace and free from all stain of Original Sin. It was her parents, Anne and Joachim that raised her to be faithful to God's word and remain free of sin. Anne is the patron of Christian mothers, and Joachim the patron of fathers. They were given the great honor and responsibility of raising Mary to be the Mother of God, and can help mothers and fathers today to raise their children to love and follow God too. Both Joachim and Anne belonged to the tribe of Judah and the house of David. Tradition tells us that he and his wife came from Galilee. They lived in Nazareth. Anne and Joachim were childless for many years. At the time that they lived, this was considered to be a punishment of God among the Jews. They continued to pray and finally God answered their prayers when the Virgin Mary was born. This was their greatest honor, to be the parent's of Mary, the Mother of God and the Grandparents of Jesus. The couple offered their little daughter to God in the Temple. As a young girl, she spent time in service to the Temple, working and learning with other girls. But it was Joachim and Anne who taught her to love and follow God's word and to know and understand the Scriptures. As Joachim and Anne are the grandparents of Jesus, today has traditionally been a day to honor one's grandparents. St. Joachim St. Anne & Mary The St. Joseph Church statues on each side of the arch over the altar depict St. Joachim and St. Anne, parents of Mary. 7

8 Malia Puka O Kalani Church MARY, Gate of Heaven pray for us. Please keep in prayer: MARY, you are the Gate of Heaven because through your hands God imparts to us all the graces by means of which we obtain heaven. God left it to your own free choice to accept or to refuse the honor of becoming the Mother of His Son. But having become the Mother of God, you share in the work of our Redemption. From the very moment that you conceived the Divine Word in your womb, you obtained, so to speak, power over the gifts which are imparted to us by the Holy Spirit, so that no creature obtains any grace from God without your mediation. Gate of Heaven, you are the sweetest, the tenderest, the kindest of mothers, constantly watching me with eyes of love as I wend my weary way through this same valley of tears that was once marked by your own blessed footsteps. How surely does devotion to you open the heavenly portals to numberless souls! Be the Gate of Heaven to me by obtaining through your prayers all the graces I need to live a holy life and to enter the gates of heaven. Fr.
